As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Disney\'s Hilton Head Resort questions
We're thinking of using our first DVC points and go to Hilton Head this summer. Has anyone been there in June and can you tell me about the weather, mosquitos and the resort in general?

I've been to HHI in June (in fact we plan to use our timeshare there the first week of June for the forseeable future), just not at the DVC. I actually lived there for 6 months (summer months) 15 years ago.
Take bug spray and if you can get it, some Avon Skin-so-Soft oil for the no-see-ums. The weather and ocean temperatures will be quite warm. You may get rain and then again you may not. We were there the first week of June last year and I don't remember having any rain. Be sure to use really good sunscreen.
Depending on when you go it may be quite busy down there...the later into June, the busier it gets. There is only one main road on the island and it can get backed up big time during the day and early evening.
Renting bikes for the week will be worth the money. We love the wonderful bike paths all over the island and the fact that you can ride them up and down the beach. It will also help you avoid traffic sometimes.
On tuesdays, Shelter Cove (the area the DVCs are in) had a "4th of July" fireworks during the summer months. There will be live music on the boardwalk and other activities. It is a great time to be on the island.

We went to Disney's HHI Resort back in August of '98. It was soooo wonderful. We had an amazing time, and it was one of the most peaceful vacations I have ever been on.
The resort has a nice pool with a slide, a charming little boardwalk area that is above the marshy areas, and is set on a marina. When we went, you could take a sunset schooner ride for a fee. We found out about this upon check-in. It was for a fee -- but it was soooo worth the $.
The resort has a beach house that is just down the road from the actual resort. There is another pool here, private beach area, snack shop, and a little game room. We spent a day there, too -- and it was also lovely.
I would recommend LOTS of sunscreen -- as we got sooooo sunburned on our trip. The sun is strong and it was VERY hot there.
We had fun going to the outlet malls, visiting the local shops around the island, sampling the restaurants, playing mini-golf, and visiting other areas --like Savannah (love it!), Tybee Island, GA, and Charleston.

I'm glad someone brought this up because it is on our agenda for Summer, 2004.
How is the beach? Is it okay for swimming? Is it clean? Can I get beach chairs and umbrellas, or should we bring them?
Where is the to eat, and how expensive do meals run? Are the cheap eats, because my kids are fussy and I hate to waste the $ on things they won't eat?

Thanks for the info HiddenMickey.
My biggest concern is that there is a McDonald's or Burger King in the area because my 4 year old is extremely picky....unles DH or I cook, the only thing he will eat is chicken nuggets and french fries....and I DO NOT COOK on vacation [img]images/icons/wink.gif[/img]

There are a couple of McDonalds and Burger Kings. The DVC resort is kind of halfway between both sets, I think. You'll have no problem. Plus there are Hardees and Wendy's and Fuddruckers that do chicken and fries. -HiddenMickey

I can't say enough about this resort. We are dvc members and have spent 4 holiday seasons there and this past July spent 4 nights there. The resort is great as are the accomodations. Pool at resort has fun slide. There is a store and takeout counter at pool/rec area. The beach house is across the highway and you can drive or take the resort bus. It takes about 5 minutes. The beach house has another rest. a lounge game room and lots of pool activites in the summer. The [img]graemlins/wavin.gif[/img] beach is gorgeous and you can rent beach chairs and bikes if you want. We cook alot of our meals there, but the resort is at shelter cove which has some great food and shopping as does all of HHI. During July, Shelter Cove does fireworks every Tuesday and you get great view from the resort. Resort also has planned acitvities for adults and kids. We alsways have a terrific time. CM are great! I just bough 50 add-on points at HHI DVC. Can't wait to go back again!

The beach IS the big draw on Hilton Head Island (Golf is the other). The beaches are very wide and the slope is very minimal and goes way out into the water, making the beach very swimming friendly. There are also rarely any BIG waves....quite often it is very calm, but you can have many good wavy/body surfing days as well. The beaches over the New Year week were looking a bit dark due to some oil that must have washed up at some point this fall, but it sure didn't keep us from building in it.
Someone who's stayed at DVC will have to tell you about the beach chair and umbrellas. Our timeshare (Marriott) provides them for a fee (lifeguards take care of them), so we always bring our own.
Food is not cheap, but nor horribly expensive either. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from all over the island and there are menu guides printed up and given out to tourists so you can pick and choose easily. There are always the fast food places like any town as well. Plus, you'll have a kitchen in the resort, so you can cook for your family if need be. There are a variety of grocery stores on the island as well.
