As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

snorkling question
We plan on taking a Disney Cruise in July 2006 and I think we are going to try the snorkling excursion. My daughter will be 8 at that time. Do you think she would enjoy it? Also, I was wondering if we should purchase our own equipment or use theirs? How do they clean the equipment before the next people use it?

Re: snorkling question
Do you mean the Castaway Cay snorkel rentals, or an excursion at one of the other islands you visit?
There are a lot of advantages to the Castaway Cay snorkel rentals if you're unsure of a person's interest. The biggest downside is that if he/she ends up loving it, Castaway Cay is usually the last day of the cruise, so there won't be a second chance to enjoy the activity.
Castaway Cay provides shallow, calm, shark-protected waters for snorkeling. Unlike an excursion, you can call it quits and move onto another activity or return to the ship at any time. The downside of Castaway Cay is there isn't much interesting to see (no coral reef, for example), and the water can get murky because of all the other snorkelers and swimmers in the area.
Note that except at Castaway Cay, all the snorkel excursions are run by independent companies. There's no way to be sure in advance what company will be running your excursion. Still, everyone in the tourist trade does a decent job of sanitizing their equipment between excursions. All the equipment is bathed in a sanitizing wash after it has been used. Most of the cruise lines use the same excursion operators, and most of the lines monitor the performance of those tour operators, so if a problem crops up with a tour operator :::snap::: they've been replaced by another company - it's a very competitive business.
The children who enjoy snorkeling tend to be very experienced swimmers. The more comfortable they are in the water and the more swimming lessons they've had, the more confident they'll be. Still, it's a new experience, and if if a child has never swam in salt water and/or surrounded by fish, seaweed, etc., it's hard to predict whether the child will be fascinated or frightened. It's a safe bet that if a child is normally easily spooked by unexpected animals or sensations, then it may be better to wait a few more years. Also, some snorkel excursions are in calm lagoons, while others are in the open ocean. I don't recommend open ocean snorkeling for beginners - the waves add yet one more challenge to the experience.
If you decide to go, don't bother with buying your own gear. If your family falls in love with the activity, consider buying it for the next trip. Generally, the gear used for excursions is better than the cheaper equipment commonly found in places other than dive shops, and if you have a problem with fit, the excursion will have a variety of alternate sizes at your disposal.
There are several discomfort factors you can address in advance. Most important - waterproof sun block - SPF 30 or better. Snorkelers are on their bellies the entire time, and thanks to the cooling waters won't notice their backs (including the backs of their legs) have burned until it's much too late. Also, bring a bottle of fresh water on your dive, tethered to a strap of some sort. Everyone is going to get at least one mouthful of salt water, and perhaps an eyeful, too. Many kids will want to stop right then and there unless you have a way to "make it better."

Re: snorkling question
Thanks for all the pointers (especially the water bottle). I was thinking of doing the snorkling at Nassau (Carribean Queen Snorkling Tour). My daughter is timid of water right now, but is excited about going snorkling and seeing fish. I hope by next year and LOTS of swimming lessons, her timidness will fade.
I just received your WDW book. I had to get that after being so impressed with reading the Disney Cruise Line book. :O) Thanks again! Suzie

Re: snorkling question
LOTS OF SUNSCREEN! My future son-in-law is sporting the snorkel burn from not enough sunscreen on his back, which looks like a big circle. Burned to a crisp. He loved the snorkeling at Castaway Cay, as it was his first snorkel experience.
We've snorkeled before, so we own our own now and got them through Sam's Club and BJ's. I think they were $40 - $50 a set. They have kids sizes too.

Re: snorkling question
I agree with Joan. It was overcast and I had no idea how sunburn you can get. My DD 8yr. old got blisters. After 2 weeks she is just now clearing up. Next time my children will wear t-shirts. When you're snorkeling it can take you a couple of hours to get out and come back. You don't realize how your back is out of the water and there you have it, a nice red burn by the end of a wonderful day.

Re: snorkling question
I never thought of getting sunburned on your back! I like your idea on wearing a shirt. I have never been on a Disney Cruise and am very open to all the tips and hints you can give me. Thanks so much!!! Suzie

Re: snorkling question
also consider picking up a rash guard type swim shirt that offers SPF protection. They come in long and short sleeve. You can often find them at Old Navy, Gap, Lands End, Speedo, and any other reputable online surf/swim shop. I buy these each and every year for my son and daughter and they don't know any other way of swimming except with these on. Oh, you can find them at Sports Authority stores too or any other big sports store that carries swim gear. You may be hard pressed to find them now as most of the retail world wants us to know it is officially time to shop for the holidays, but next spring would be a great time to start looking. They should fit snug, each label will give a guide if they are true to size or if you should buy one size bigger or smaller.
And they dry super quick too.
