As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Printer for Digital Photos?
Does anyone have a suggestion for a good printer? I just got a digital camera and have taken many great photos, but have not printed any out yet because I'm waiting to get a good printer. My Disney trip is coming up in November, so I need to get one before we go so I can print my photos out when I get back home. Who has a good printer??

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
I have an HP officejet and an HP Photo printer and neither one produce anything I would put in a scrapbook. I did some rough calculations recently and discovered that it was cheaper to send my photos to Snapfish or one of the online printers to get them done and they are much better quality. I use my little printer for "polaroid" type things where the kids are making a craft or if I need a picture quickly. For the ones I want to preserve, I order them out.

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
I agree, the paper and ink is so expensive that printing dozens (or more) pics would be much more. You can send them out over the internet. You just upload to a site (we also use Snapfish) or you can take your memeory card to Cvs, Wla-Mart etc & they can make prints from that. If you do that though, make sure you put the photos on a cd before you go. I have heard horror stories of places ruining the card (not permanently but they can't develop the pics). Ther's a technical name for that but I don't remeber it right now. just make sure you make a copy either onto a cd or your hard rive. That way you could still upload them.

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
I go to my local store that has a Kodak Picture Maker Kiosk. (I use a RiteAid, because they can print the pictures, not every store with one can. Usually if they have a photo department they can do it, so ask.) I put in my SD card, pick the pictures I want (which show up really dark on the machine, but aren't that dark when the print out) (I had over 100 pictures this time) and in about 2.5 hours they are done, and I go and pick them up. It came to about 26 dollars, and I had a coupon so it came to about 20, which is really good if you think about it, since it only took a couple hours and was 100 pictures.
Hope this helps!

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
Hi,
Epson has a great printer called the Picture Mate. It has great reviews and is reasonable priced $199, includes the ink and paper for 100 pictures. I put this on my Christmas Wish list.
Forgot to mention that the ink refills are around $30 and includes paper for 100 photos. The cost turns our t be around 29 cents/photo. I know that OFOTO is 20 cents, unless you get a special.

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
My sister has a photo dock for her Kodak Easyshare camera, and that is great. You could use it without the Easyshare camera too, since it will print from the Easyshare software (which either comes with the dock--or might be free from Kodak online). That only prints up to 4 x 6, though, and could be more expensive than ordering prints at a kiosk or online. It is great quality, but I found that our $30.00 came-with-the-computer Lexmark inkjet printer prints just as well, using photo quality paper and choosing the right settings in setup. It's slower, though, and the prints have to dry.
Shutterfly is offering 15 free prints for joining--so I'm going to try that later this week! I know Ofoto.com did a great job printing a 16 x 20 enlargement for me--from a 3.1 mp camera! I was very surprised how well it turned out--and since it was my first order I got free shipping.
When my sister got her camera, we priced things out, and it was cheaper to order prints online than to use her printer dock. Prices on the dock's refills have gone down recently, though. We didn't price out using the cheap printer, but were shocked to find the ink refills cost more than the printer itself!

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
Another vote for uploading your photos to be printed! I have used Snapfish for 2+ years and have been very pleased. I have also used Shutterfly and Ofoto with good results. If you pre-pay at any of those sites, you can get some great rates on 4x6 prints. They are of excellent quality, and you don't have to worry about the color running if they get wet. (I printed some on photo paper at home, and DS sneezed on them causing spots! Ewwwwwwww...) I still use my inkjet printer for some projects and scrapbooking, but when you factor in the expensive paper and ink, you'll never beat the online prices AND clarity.

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
Have a Canon i960 that produces really sharp, color accurate prints. Photo Paper, and ink aren't cheap, but it's nice to be able to get pro lab quality prints (at various sizes) at home. Price has come down, and you can get an i960 for around $160.

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
I use Yahoo photos. Two reasons....the first is that I can share my photos via email, and the second is that they will print and mail to me at a very inexpensive price.

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
We got a Cannon i900D about a month ago. It is absolutly wonderful. Professional Quality prints in a lot of different sizes. You don't have to hook it up to a computer. Just slide your memory card into the slot. There is a small screen to see what you are printing. You can zoom in, crop, and enlarge all on this small screen. You can also print sheets of wallets. There are so many features, we have only used about half of them.
We have the Kodak DX6490 camera. When we bought it we intended to get the easy share printer a few weeks later. When we started to compare printers, we realized that the easy share, while cheapr to buy, is actually more expensive in the long run. You have to buy paper and ink in a pack. I think you also have to buy a complete set of ink each time you run out of a color.
With the Cannon you can buy indiviual ink wells for the color you need. The printer comes with a full set of ink. I have printed over 100 pictures and have still not had to change any ink.
I like the freedom to print out picture as I need them. And the pictures are absolulty beautiful.
I think it cost $199.00.

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
I'm another happy customer with the Canon i960. I haven't had it long, but it has produced some beautiful prints and I love the instant gratification.
When my parents were down for a visit, we snapped a bunch of shots and created an on-the-spot family photo album for their anniversary. They said it was one of the best gifts they ever received!

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
I upload to shutterfly. I can share them online and they will print 80 characters on the back of the pictures. It's been a lifesaver. I prepay for $100 worth of photos a year..comes to 22c a picture. I can then have them snailmailed directly to the people who want to see them, like dh's family and a few of my friends. Awesome.
You can get 15 free prints to try it - you pay for shipping only.

Re: Printer for Digital Photos?
For photographs that I would like to enlarge to hang on a wall, I upload them to Ofoto and wait for them to come in the mail. The ones that I have received are absolutely gorgeous - better than film!
For printing at home I use my HP Printer/Scanner/Copier. I looked at the photo printers, but didn't like being limited to 4x6 photos. The printer that I have has a 2 cartridges (black & color), however, when I print photographs I replace the black cartridge with a photo ink cartridge. I couldn't believe the difference the first time I did it. So, now I always keep a photo ink cartridge on hand for photos that I would like to look better than printing with regular ink, but don't want to spend the money to 'develop' them.
As for photo paper - check out your local Circuit City. I have frequently purchased photo paper when they are running buy 1 (or 2) get 1 specials.
Have fun and enjoy that digital camera!
