As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

category 9 or category 4?
I am in the planning stages for a November 2005 7-day cruise. We are a family of 5 (kids will be 14, 12, 7). So, gotta love Disney, now I have to decide between a category 4 stateroom vs. adjoining category 9 rooms to accomodate all 5 of us. I would love some opinions on which option to take. All comments are appreciated.

Re: category 9 or category 4?
While I love having a verandah, I'd opt for two Cat 9 cabins.
You and your spouse could have some privacy if you'd like and you'd have two full baths.

Re: category 9 or category 4?
Our family of 5 ( me & 4 boys ages 17, 16, 11, and 10) went on the 7 day western cruise and we had 2 cat. 4 rooms that connected. It was great because we both had verandas and separate bathrooms !

Re: category 9 or category 4?
While I see someone opted for two category 4 rooms, we aren't all that lucky and able to afford that. We opted for two category 9. We will have two bathrooms, additonal closet space, the kids will feel more independence in having their "own" room, and my husband and I will have some privacy. If you don't feel comfortable with the kids having their own room, you can always lock their door from the inside. Have fun!

Re: category 9 or category 4?
When you pick to do 2 category 9 rooms, how do you arrange the people ON PAPER. Is there a certain way to make it cheaper? 3 in one and 2 in the other? 4 in one and 1 in the other??

You want at least 2 people in each room, so three and two. You pay less for the third (and fourth) person in each room, but would pay a single supplement if there was only one person.

Re: category 9 or category 4?
I've just seen pictures of the category 4 and the category 9 rooms. The category 4 rooms look SO MUCH bigger. Even though you would have 2 of the category 9 rooms, it just seems like you would be tripping over each other in the rooms. Plus the catgory 4 rooms have the verandah.

Re: category 9 or category 4?
I found this on mousesavers.com
The combined price of two connecting lower-category staterooms is often about two-thirds to three-quarters the price of a single Category 4 cabin (300 square feet), and you end up with more space (over 400 square feet total), two full bathrooms, and more privacy.

Re: category 9 or category 4?
We chose the one room because I was told that there was no guarantee that the rooms would be connected, and I just wasn't comfortable taking the chance that the kids would be completely in their own room, and well, I wanted to sleep with DH not one of us in each room. The cost difference was something I looked at too, and I really liked the idea of not being down in the "belly" of the ship, but that's just me and my issues! I would certainly do the two rooms if my kids were older, or if we were going to be on one of the longer cruises.

Re: category 9 or category 4?
On the Disney cruise line website and also in the Passporter Cruise book (but you might need a magnifying glass) it shows which rooms are connecting. If you book specific room numbers, you are guaranteed those rooms.
On our first cruise it was me, DH and 2 DDs, so we stayed in one Category 5. Nice size for four people with the verandah. On this next one, it's DH, me, 2DD's, a DstepD, her brother, and her boyfriend (sigh, young love). We decided to put 3 of us in a #5, and 2 each in 2 #11's, across the hall from our #5. We requested specific rooms numbers and got them. I did not want the boys and girls rooms to connect AT ALL, so I made sure when I looked and booked. My TA also confirmed it for me. Before I started being so generous with DH's money, it was going to be the 5 of us and I got price quotes from my TA for various choices. I made my selections based on square footage and cost. Once we decided to add the boys on, it was easy to arrange for the extra room, knowing that the girls were across the hall already. I have cousins going on the same cruise and they've done the same thing with their daughters. It really depends on the age of the kids too. Mine are older and my cousins are too.
Talking with my TA really helped me to make decisions that were best for my family and I really liked it that he gave me price quotes for 5 different configurations.

Re: category 9 or category 4?
I think we're going for the Cat. 4 b/c our kids will be 13, 10, and 7. While the 2 oldest would be fine, I wouldn't put it past the youngest to decide to go "exploring" in the middle of the night. She's one of those children who is completely without fear! (Which can be kind of scary, no pun intended!) Good luck with whatever you decide and have fun planning!
