As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Universal and Islands of Adventure - for a 4 year old?
I was wondering - what is the appropriate age to take children to Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios. Is there enough to keep both a 4 and a 10 year old busy? I have two sons - age 4 and 10 and was wondering how many days to plan to attend the parks. I have also read that if you are staying offsite - avoid Friday and Saturday's. Any other suggestions for a first time visit? Thanks!

Re: Universal and Islands of Adventure - for a 4 year old?
Lots of stuff in Seuss Landing at IOA that would be appropriate for a 4 year old, but not too much else, IMHO. There is mostly coasters and "stuff" for bigger kids there. We took my DD (who was then 2 1/2) last December to US and she had an OK time . . . she liked playing in the Fievel Playland and she liked the Barney show and playground as well. We didn't play at the Curious George playground because she wasn't dressed the part (it's all water!!!) but there was a small playground nearby that she had a blast on. The Woody Woodpecker coaster is for kids as short as 36 inches, and didn't look too rough for little ones (it is much like the Goofy coaster in Toontown at MK). She really liked E.T. and (surprisingly) did well through Terminator. The waits were way too long for Jimmy Neutron and Shrek, so we missed out on those, but hope to get back to try them sometime. She got a little scared on Jaws and on Earthquake but at the end was laughing about the "silly shark" and "the big truck that almost hit us". We only spent one day at US, and we've only gone a half day at IOA becasue we are not big coaster people. One day per Universal park is enough for us.

Re: Universal and Islands of Adventure - for a 4 year old?
We were there last November and my little guy was 4 1/2 and loved certain parts in both parks...JImmy Neutron huge hit...Shrek but the part before the line was a huge wait!!
Men in Black was fun for him...
IOA Spiderman was great and Suess Landing...and it took him awhile to work up the courage for Jurassic Park and he was glad he did!!!
let me know if I can answer any specific questions!

Re: Universal and Islands of Adventure - for a 4 year old?
Aimee - We are kind of stuck on staying at POR for 10 days. We don't like the idea of changing resorts midstream. What if we go to the IOA and US during the week and avoid the weekend crowds -- what are our chances of a good experience given that we are staying off-site from US?

Re: Question for Aimee?
Aimee -
We are going in June or July of 2005 to Universal and Islands of Adventure. We will be staying off-site at Port Orleans Riverside. We will be visiting US and IOA during the week - Sunday through Thursday; we will definitely avoid the weekend crowds. Our plans right now are for June 23 through July 3rd at Port Orleans Riverside with visits to US and IOA during June 26th through June 30th. What do you think our chances are to avoid the crowds at US and IOA?

Re: Question for Aimee?
I would question how much is it to upgrade to get the Front of the line pass...I wish I had planned a lot earlier for our restaurant choices at City Walk!!...The hours will be much better...when we went they were only open till 6 which was a downside......POR is a great hotel....I would suggest Building 14 it is the closest one to the Food Court a plus with little ones and always wanting a snack!!

Re: Universal and Islands of Adventure - for a 4 year old?
What you might want to do is check the height restrictions for the rides and see how many rides your 4 yr. old is tall enough to ride:
http://themeparks.universalstudios.c..._services.html
I have been to Universal twice in July, in 2002 it was not very crowded, in 2003 I thought it was more crowded. I personally would not want to visit in the summer months without staying in one of their resorts to get front of the line access. But if you get there early you could catch some of the more popular attractions first. Last year Shrek had just opened. We arrived when the park opened at 9:00. There was already a 90 minute wait for Shrek. However, with our Universal room keys, we walked right into Shrek with no wait.
The crowds at Universal seem to slim down in the evening hours too. The parking is free after 6:00, I think this is to attract visitors to CityWalk's restaurants.
At IOA, the rides are more "thrill" related, but the Dr. Suess land is so cute and has 3 or 4 kiddie rides. I love the Cat in the Hat dark ride there. The Flying Unicorn is a kiddie coaster in the Lost Continent. And in Jurassic Park there is the Pteranodon Flyers for smaller folk. And in Superhero Island, I bet your 4 year old will love the Superhero parade with Spiderman! It runs through that section of the park a good many times a day. You can have your picture taken with the super heros there too.
At USF, there is probably more that your 4 yr. old can do, as some other people have already posted. Our favorite attractions there are E.T., Men in Black, Terminator, and Shrek, and I think your 4 yr. old could probably do them all. There are some cute shows there too. Don't miss the Animal Planet show, it was our favorite.
My preference would be to stay onsite, but if that's not an option for you, I think with the Universal Express Pass (Universal's version of FastPass), you can probably do most of the things you want to do. It was crowded, but not so crowded that you couldn't manage it. Probably no worse than Disney would be during that time of year, in fact, it may be a little less crowded than Disney parks. If you do a little planning and know which attractions you need to hit first, you will probably be fine.
Universal is offering a 5 day pass for the price of a 2 day right now online. That might help you from having to cram it all in 2 days.
