Forums Closed

As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

No more paychecks for me....
That is after the baby comes, I am planning on being a stay at home mom. John & I have discussed this to no end & have decided no matter what, WE CAN DO THIS. I am absolutely terrified about staying home, not that I think I will go stir crazy with the kids, but I have had a job since I was 14. The thought of having to be "dependent" upon someone else is a scary thought.
Thank you so much for letting me vent & share my fears with you. I am looking for reasurrance or tips in this decision from those of you with experience.

Re: No more paychecks for me....
Oh...it's a difficult decision, but the best you could ever make! My absolute favorite kid poem is:
"Cleaning and scrubbing can wait til tomorrow
For babies grow up, I've learned to my sorrow
So quiet down cobwebs and dust go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep!"
My DD is 21 and I can't believe the time went so quickly. Since you can take the time...take it! Enjoy it! You'll never regret it when your kids are grown!

Re: No more paychecks for me....
Having been a stay at home Mom I can tell you the pay stinks, the hours are terrible but the rewards make up for it. Children are only little once! There is a lot of pressure to give children the material things but money can not give children the love and support they get from having you at home. Follow your heart and stay home. Your children will thank you for it later.
You can e-mail me anytime for support.
Good luck!

Good luck and best wishes to you!

I do know how you feel though, I've worked since I was 15 and I've only briefly thought of staying home full time. (I do stay home part-time) I always worried I'd feel like I'd have to ASK DH to spend any money or something! He'd never intentionally make me feel that way but that's how I'd feel.
My boys are 10 and 11 1/2 and there are still days I wish I did stay home all the time.....maybe I'm just getting lazy!!

Re: No more paychecks for me....
It was a big move for me to be a Stay-at-home-Dad and scary for us. This was late 1992. My wife made 2 1/2 times my salary so it made more sense for me to do it. The first couple of years were tough, but we made adjustments. Then my wifes business took off and it's been much easier.
At first it was real scary to be home alone with a 19 month old and a 8 month old. I do not think I had spent more than 3 hours at a time alone with my kids before that. I needed a nap time more than they did at first! And then there was the time I threw a tantrum on the kitchen floor! My son was throwing one first, so I thought I'd show him how it looked to others. They still ask me from time to time to tell them "Dad's Tantrum Story". I also wore out jeans left and right from crawling on the floor playing.
To sum it up. I've had a ball.
You will do fine.

Re: No more paychecks for me....
Staying at home is the BEST! DH and I didn't think we could manage with our first one, so I continued to work. When second DS came along, I really felt compelled to stay home - so after MUCH number crunching and begging and pleading, and letting DH purchase a top of the line mountain bike before I quit , I was able to stay home after DS#2 came along. It was the best decision of our lives. My only regret was that we didn't do it with our first child.
It is true that they grow up so very quickly! It was tough at first to do without that extra income, but we managed! You will truly enjoy watching your baby grow and learn and being there every step of the way!
Good for you!

Re: No more paychecks for me....
Good luck to you! DH and I made that same agreement when I was pregnant with DD! I stayed home for about 3 years and then went back to work at nights so we didnt have to pay for a babysitter. When DS came around, I was going to college at night so that was my escape into the real world for a few hours at night! The most advice that I can give is if you do decide to do it, dont forget there are other things out there for you and the little one to do! I signed her up for storytime at the Library and we had a blast doing it! There are so many things out there to do at no or hardly any cost! Youre making the best choice by doing that for they are only little for so long before they go off to school full time!

Re: No more paychecks for me....
That's wonderful! A friend of mine is going to do the same - she's having twins, so it would be more expensive to put them in daycare than what she makes! I hope that when DH and I decide to have kids we can do the same!

Re: No more paychecks for me....
Congratulations...that's a really big step to take, and I really respect people who are able to make the sacrifices necessary to take the plunge into a single-income family.
Good luck.

Re: No more paychecks for me....
I'm a stay-at-home Mom. We sacrificed some luxuries so that I could stay with the children. Example: we have one vehicle, we don't go out a lot, we don't take big vacations. I'm always "on call" 24/7.
However, it's the most rewarding job I've ever had. Being able to see every "first" of your children, being able to volunteer at the school, going on field trips with the kids, not worrying about taking time off work when my kids are sick. Just being there whenever they needed me is worth everything we've had to give up and if it's financially available to you I definitely recommend being a stay-at-home Mom! Re: No more paychecks for me....
My baby just turned 23 on Wed WHERE DID THE TIME GO??? I was a stay at home mom up until the kids basically started school. Shawn was in kindergarden & Shannon went to pre-school while I went to nursing school (it all worked out well). Once both were in school full time, I then ventured out into the work force.
I wouldn't change a thing! Yup, you work long hours for little or no pay but the benifits of motherhood out weight it all. You will be fine

Re: No more paychecks for me....
Congrats and good luck to you Shannon! We decided I'd stay at home when we started trying to have a baby and it was sooo scary - me depend on someone?! But I did it and I've never looked back, Shane makes every moment of every day worthwhile and I'm so glad I'm home with him to enjoy it all. Remember to still try and make time to do things for yourself (even if it's just something little like drinking your favorite tea in the morning or at night before bed) during the day and you'll be just fine We're all here for you!

Re: No more paychecks for me....
It's the best decision you could make for your kids.
There are lots of moms out there who don't have the opportunity to be able to stay home with their kids and envy those of us who can.
Welcome to the world of " stay at home mom" the hardest job you'll ever have, but also the most rewarding

Re: No more paychecks for me....
When DH and I got married I was working full time. 1 month later my position was cut and I was let go. 3 months after that I got pregnant. We were in the middle of renovating our old house and DH was getting pretty stressed out, but we decided even though we certainly could have used 2 incomes that it would be best for me to stay home. So home is where I spent the next 14 years until going back to work 6 years ago. It was the best decision we ever made. I would much rather raise my own child than to pay somebody else to do it.
