Forums Closed

As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Email addresses from DCL??
Hello!
My DPIL (parent's-in-law) are going on a cruise with NCL and they have been given an email address to use while they are cruising with them. They will be able to access any messages we send at stations on each level of the ship on a daily (maybe more often) basis. This is WAY cool , I think!
Does Disney do anything similar? If not, can you access your regular email and how do you do that/how much does it cost?
Thanks everyone!

Re: Email addresses from DCL??
You should be able to access your own e-mail but to be sure, sign up for a Yahoo or Hotmail address. I'm going to go lookup the pricing for you. I'll be back!

Re: Email addresses from DCL??
Yikes! DCL charges HOW MUCH and NCL offers it for FREE? Does it maybe have something to do with what category level they are going?

Re: Email addresses from DCL??
Thank you Belle* I do already have both hotmail & yahoo accts. so that part is taken care of!
Yikes! I was really hoping to use this to check on our sweet pooch while we were gone but that price is pretty daunting. Oh well, I guess you have to do what you have to do . Thank you for the info. Stormy!
I really don't think so Elaine, I am not sure what category they are in but from what DMIL said there are stations on every level of the ship that you can access the address they give you to get messages. I don't think it's general internet access but all I really want to do is check my email once or twice a day--this would have been perfect! Plus they got an ENORMOUS deal on this trip (maybe $1300 for airfare from Chi. to Seattle & the cruise--AMAZING!). They may even have a balcony for that price!
Thanks everyone!

Re: Email addresses from DCL??
NCL does NOT offer free Internet access. Like DCL, they provide you with a shipboard e-mail address where you can RECEIVE e-mail free (usually through Guest Services I believe), but not send. Like DCL, NCL charges 75 cents per minute.
For NCL's pricing, see http://www.ncl.com/more/internet_cafe.asp

Re: Email addresses from DCL??
Internet access on DCL is provided by a third-party contractor that services several other cruise lines. Internet access at sea requires a satellite connection, and that doesn't come cheaply.
They use a standardized e-mail account-naming procedure, typically using the first initial, last name and stateroom number of the guest who booked the reservation. There's no reason a cruise line couldn't give that address out in advance and look like it's doing something special. Not only that, but it would encourage more guests to pay for the e-mail service.
For my money, the NCL Internet address "feature" is like those cruise ads that imply that the pictured shore excursions are included in the cruise. Of course, they're extra-cost options, and nearly every excursion is offered by nearly every cruise line.
If you want to use e-mail economically on board, create a special free e-mail account (hotmail, etc.) or a new AOL screen name/ISP username, just to use on the cruise. That way you won't have to wade through a lot of spam to find urgent messages from home or the office. Then, if all you need to do is check e-mail occasionally, use the on-board pay-as-you go option (75 cents per minute). To save even more money, visit Internet cafes when you're in ports-of-call--charges are far lower. Having an e-mail address independent of the ship gives you the flexibility to check and respond to e-mail wherever you are on your journey.

Re: Email addresses from DCL??
If you choose to do the 75 cents per minute access, no matter which cruise line you are on, just remember that the 75 cents per minute is charged not only while you are retrieving e-mail, but while you are reading and composing - in other words, any time you are "using" the Internet terminal. It can get VERY expensive!

Re: Email addresses from DCL??
The "unlimited Internet" plan is $39.99 on the 3-night and 4-night cruises. It is $89.99 on the 7-night cruises. If you do not sign up for the unlimited package, it will cost you 75 cents per minute.

Re: Email addresses from DCL??
I ended up spending about $40 on the 7-day cruise checking my email once a day for about ten minutes, to keep in touch with my husband.
The fun thing about Disney was that they often offered "specials" -- one days it was send a video email for free. You paid for the minutes to make it, but the $4 or $5 fee to send it was free. We lucked out, that day was my sister's birthday, so we were singing in the Internet cafe...
If you keep track of your time, and only read the emails you *need* to, you shouldn't be spending that much time. And Internet cafes in port are cheaper, too.

Re: Email addresses from DCL??
Most ports have at least one Internet cafe in the heart of touristland. We list some of them our DCL guidebook on page 113, but a pair of sharp eyes while you stroll around may be enough-some are legitimate cafes, others are bars, souvenir shops, etc., advertising Internet access in the window. Also, scan the ads in the tourist maps and fliers you'll get when you step off the ship. A Google search for "(island/port name) Internet cafe" works very well, too.
