Forums Closed

As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: Peter Island -- British Virgin Islands
Yeah it's kind of an interesting story. The island was purchased in the 1960s by some Norwegian billionaire who built the resort.
When he passed away in the '70s, the two guys who founded Amway snapped it up and ultimatey flipped title to the Amway Corporation. In the last six years or so though, one of the guys bought back title outright to both the island and the resort. Now privately owned by his daughter, to whom both were given as a gift. Must be nice huh
Great history down there. Especially some of the old pirate stories. The main channel was used by european trading ships and the pirates would hide out amongst the countless little islands and sack em as they came through. Dead Chest Island (right off the main PI beach) is where Blackbeard marooned the 15 men that the "Yo, ho, ho and a bottle of rum!" song comes from. And Robert Louis Stevens "Treasure Island" was set in and amongsst the British side as well.
The VI will make a great setting for "pirates of the Caribbean" if they do end up doing some shototing down there.

Those pictures are absolutely stunning! Don't think I'll have to twist DH's arm too much for a trip there. Someday...

Peter Island -- British Virgin Islands
While writting our AKL trip report, I remembered I'd posted this report about our honeymoon this past December at Travel Talk Online. TTOL is a great, active Caribbean travel board I found for planning our trip to the BVI. Of course, that was back in the days before Steve's great forum here.
Anyway, it's just a quick write up of our trip and I figured I might as well post it over here too. This place was Paradise. Not cheap though. We did it in the "offseason" and it was still up there. And airfare to the Caribbean was highway robbery. $800/ticket to St. Thomas were you can ferry over to the British side. So it really is a honeymoon kind of spot. And a great one at that . Alas, it'll be years before we can afford that trip again though

Peter Island Resort, British Virgin Islands
December 9 to December 21, 2001
Returned last week from 12 unbelievably relaxing, romantic and fun days at Peter Island Resort. Can't say enough fantastic things about both the resort and the BVI in general. Both are paradise and there's no way we could have picked a better place to Honeymoon.
From the minute we arrived to the minute we left we basked in PIRs beautiful grounds, incredibly friendly and accomodating staff, the seemingly endless breathtaking views, virtually deserted pristine beaches and fantastic food and drinks.
Every day we were essentially alone on all of the beaches. And when there were others it was so spread out we might as well have been alone.
The beauty of Deadmans Bay is exactly as described and White Bay isn't far behind. We spent an entire half day in absolute paradise comepletely alone on White Bay beach snorkeling in the pristine waters and lounging under the thatched huts.
We found the food to be excellent (both at Tradewinds and down at Deachmans Bar/Grill), particularly if you stick to the island dishes like Jerk Shrimp or coconut/banana, cinamon chicken type dishes. And the Sunday (or was it Saturday?) night buffet at Tradewinds was a mouthwatering feast.
Loved our room. We opted for an Oceanview up by the pool and couldn't have been happier. The beachfront rooms look spectacular but I think we'll likely stick to the Oceanview again on our next visit. The room was plenty large with a desk, a small CD player, a couple of lounging chairs/ottoman and an amply sized private deck with table/chairs and a cushioned lounger. All with a view out across the pool and over the channel to Tortola and the evening lights of Road Town. It doesn't get much better than that. Ample sized mini fridge in room as well as a good sized safe. It was pretty windy while we were there and the slats in the windows/doors offered a great breeze through the room. Best of all though? No TVs. I got nothin against the ol' tube but boy was it nice to get away from it from it for awhile. Didn't miss the lack of connection with the outside world for a second.
My wife visited the Sole Spa on Deadmans a couple of times for a massage and some kind of wrap thing and really enjoyed it. I actually did get a massage one day that was top notch.
From the natural beauty of the island itself, to the manicured grounds, to the staff, we think the place is a paradise.
Jeff the resort manager was incredibly friendly and always available if you needed anything. We had no complaints or problems but again felt that, during our stay he was more than available if the need had arisen. Benji and Jean (who are legendary on the island) were gracious hosts who make you feel like family and are an asset to the resort that couldn't possibly be valued. In fact, all of the staff were praiseworthy, excellent representatives of the resort.
We highly recommend PIR and can't wait to get back. BVI really are natures little secret.

Re: Peter Island -- British Virgin Islands
I love all the British Virgin Islands! The expense is always well worth it. However, as Matt said, they sure get you good for airfare especially depending on what time of year you go!!!
