Forums Closed

As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: New Orleans !
OK, let's see if I can help you since I am a native New Orleanian. First of all, the Fairmont is an old hotel but is very nice. The Rams stayed there during Superbowl, and many of the presidents have stayed there when they are in town. How long will you be here? Some things you might want to do are ride the streetcar down St. Charles Avenue, take a riverboat cruise on the Natchez, definitely hit the French Quarter (Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, beignets at Cafe du Monde, hurricanes at Pat O'Brien's, Bourbon Street), and maybe visit Mardi Gras World. The food here is absolutely incredible, and if you'll give me some idea of your budget and the type of food you enjoy, I'll be happy to make some recommendations for you. Please feel free to email me personally if you have any questions. You might also want to check out www.insideneworleans.com for some great information.

New Orleans !
Hubby and I are going to New Orleans in June for combination birthday, fathers day, and anniversary. It is a surprise for him, he knows we are going somewhere but not where. I got a good deal on the Fairmont Hotel, just outside of the French Quarter. Is this a nice hotel? I have done a little research on the internet, but I always value my passporter friends opionions. Any ideas on where to eat? Any must sees?

Re: New Orleans !
Lori,
I am a Laurie too! Thankyou for your response
it is great to get information from a native. We will be in New Orleans for 5 days. I had heard that the Fairmont was an old Hotel, but it is good to hear from someone who knows it is quite nice.
Budjet wise, we do not mind getting gussied up and spending big $$$ on a few memorable meals. Most of the time on vacation however, we are again looking for something comfortable and sometimes cultural. I am not too big on fish(hubby is)but we both love crustations and just about everything else.
Thanks also for the "must do" and the web site info. Would you recommend a plantation tour? or is that all just too much for 5 days?
Laurie from CA

Re: New Orleans !
Dress for warm temperatures..the big easy can become pretty sticky and hot, but take a a stroll along the riverwalk to cool off. One of our favorites places is Mulates. It's a short walk from Canal Place. They have good food and lots of atmosphere....even cajun dancing last time we checked..fun to watch if not joining in....have a great time. This is a great town for people watching.

Re: New Orleans !
Hey I am another native.
The Fairmont is a wonderful hotel (a friend of mine had her wedding reception there).
A few good places to eat
Crescent City Brewhouse, or the Red room
If you can spend big buck for a really nice place try Commanders Palace
And definatly get some fudge if you go to the Riverwalk
I hope you have a good time!

Re: New Orleans !
Commander's Palace is definitely a great choice, also consider Emeril's, Bella Luna, and breakfast at Brennan's. Plantation tours would be a lot of fun if you don't mind the drive to get to them. And Artmom2 is right in that it gets very hot and humid here, very similar to WDW in the summer, so be sure to bring loose, comfortable clothing. Many of the nicer, more expensive restaurants (like Commander's Palace) require a coat and tie for men in the evening, so be sure to check when making reservations so you'll know what to pack.

Re: New Orleans !
Boy, I am really getting excited now. Just thinking of all that wonderful food is making me drool. My husband still does not have a clue to where he is going, and it is getting much harder to keep it a secret. His guesses are: San Francisco, Las Vegas, or Lake Tahoe.
Being from Southern California, we are used to the heat, but not the "muggy" heat. I have never been to WDW in the summer, but was there once in April, 90 deg. and what seemed like 200 percent humidity.
I have read alot about Commanders Palace, and it sounds like a definte must do.I am considering lunch, while we are checking out the Garden District. Mulates sounds like a cool New Orleans experience also.
Thank-you again everyone for your wonderful recommendations.

Re: New Orleans !
Some additional dining choices from our trips to New Orleans include:
breakfast at Brennan's (a must do at least once
and definitely try their original Bananas
Foster),
Sammy's Seafood (very casual, located on
Bourbon Street, excellent crawfish etouffe and
shrimp creole at VERY reasonable prices),
Acropolis Star Steak/Lobster (in the quarter,
excellent steaks stuffed with crab/lobster),
and the French Market Restaurant (any crawfish
or shrimp entree).
Enjoy your stay!

Re: New Orleans !
We've been to Nawlins 4 times. It's a fabulous trip! Our favorite places to eat are not necessarily the ones in travel guides. Try Mother's (to die for Pecan pie), Gumbo shop (great blackened catfish, awesome corn), Gumbolaya (the BEST red beans and rice, jumbalaya, gumbo and fried seafood.) You'll love your trip!

Re: New Orleans !
This is all too hard to keep from my husband. He thinks we are going to either Las Vegas or San Francisco,(this is because I told him that we have been to this place before). We have sort of. We stopped in New Orleans (The Airport) on the way to WDW once, but we did not get off the plane. Every time I have doubts about my choice, I read all of your suggestions, and I know we are going to have a great time! I went to the library and checked out some books on New Orleans . I will be able to give him a short history lesson as well as some of the best food in the country! I have rented "Double Jeopardy" and "Interview With a Vampire" to feed my excitement and sample some of the scenery.
Thanks again for all of your friendly, wonderful responses.

Re: New Orleans !
New Orleans is a wonderful city...you will have a fabulous time. Now I want to go, too
Be sure to try a mint julep; if you like bourbon they're fantastic, and they sure know how to make them there. Also, I wanted to second (or is it now fourth or fifth) the recommendation for Commander's Palace; the food is amazing and definitely will be one of the memorable points of your trip. They definitely know how to eat (and drink) there.
If you're not staying in a hotel with a concierge able to get reservations in the better restaurants, you may want to call within the next month or so for restaurant reservations, particularly if you're going over a weekend (which is more in demand). On my last trip I called Nola's more than a month in advance and was only able to get in at 11pm!!

Re: New Orleans !
Thanks, I'll call right away. I just cannot decide if I want to have lunch or dinner at Commanders Palace. I have even been to their web site checking out the menus! Maybe I will make reservations for both lunch and dinner, and then cancel one of them when I get closer to the trip.
I am not a drinker, but I will definetly try a mint julip without the bourbon, (are they any good that way?) I have had one at Disneyland (New Orleans Square), but I am sure its not quite the same!
