Taking Southwest - what do I need to do if I want to watch my own movies on my iPad? - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Taking Southwest - what do I need to do if I want to watch my own movies on my iPad?
Now that I've typed that question, it seems to me I might have asked this question before
So I have two different accounts in my iPad where I have my movies (Disney Movies Anywhere and Vudu). I don't really want to actually download a movie as they take up so much room and with my luck, whatever I download, I won't feel like watching So that means if I want to stream them instead of download them I have to pay SWA to access their wifi, Is that correct?
They also "talk" about free tv. How can I access that when most times to watch tv on my iPad, I have to access the internet. To access that, I have to have wifi access which costs money on SWA. Does anyone see why I'm confused or am I way more than technically challenged?
Abby would probably understand this more than I would but simple explanations would be much appreciated. Thanks.

From what I remember, you can sign in to their hot spot without paying for Internet to access the free in-flight entertainment. It's been awhile so I don't remember the exact procedure but I remember it being pretty easy to do. I'm pretty sure there is a seat back card or something to guide you through the process.
Southwest's Free TV only requires that you put the iPad in Airplane Mode then access their onboard wifi network. Then you go to their wifi hotspot "portal" website (southwestwifi.com). We had to watch a quick video in order to access everything once we were logged in but then you should be good after that. Some shows only have a couple of free episodes but there are a few to choose from.
As far as streaming video on your iPad, you may or may not run into an issue with that. They block most high bandwidth sites, like online telephone sites (Skype) and some streaming services (like Hulu, HBO Go, Netflix). They aren't specific as to which EXACT sites they block so I am not 100% sure if Vudu or Disney Movies Anywhere are blocked. If they aren't, then you would just have to pay for their regular wifi, which is $8 for all day access.

So in other words, even if I decided to give them the $8 - I still may not be able to watch my own video because the site may be blocked period?
If I remember, SWA does not allow streaming on its WIFI. My understanding is this is because of the amount of internet "space" streaming takes. If multiple people are streaming, the internet speed would be extremely slow.
For the fee, you can check your email and visit websites but cannot stream entertainment.

Okay, thanks for that. There's no email and no website I need to read that badly that I'll pay the fee just for that. I understand some people have to work so for them it would be good but not for me for a flight a little over 2 hours long.
Most people who don't want to watch a downloaded movie probably would use the WiFi to play games - solitaire, kids stuff, etc on it. And I'm just as technologically challenged - crazy!
Best bet is, if your iPad has enough memory to fit them, buy digital copies of some movies, and load them on the device itself. Then, no internet needed to watch those films.
Internet access for $8 a day per device on WiFi-enabled aircraft:
E-mail, social networks, browsing and VPN access
In order to provide a top-notch WiFi experience, we limit access to certain high bandwidth applications and websites, including Netflix, HBO Go, and VoIP
Note unless you are using a VPN there is a good chance any streaming sites would be blocked. Also, satellite internet is not the speediest on the planet and even if streaming wasn't blocked you may find the experience less than ideal -- starts and stops, etc.
PERSONALLY, leaving enough time to download, a while before leaving for the airport I would go online at home and choose the movie I wanted to watch, oerhaps a second as a time-filler or alternate, and download them to the device for offline viewing. if when it came time to actually watch I decided that I didn't want to, then I would use the free TV option, read, or sleep. When you arrive at your destination you can delete the movie you watched and, if desired, even download a new one.
Do either DMA or Vudu allow you to pick the definition of what you're downloading? If they do, picking Standard Definition over High Definition will let you fit more on your device. Alternately, you could cruise around on the free episode area of ITunes and find smaller sized entertainment that would allow you o fit a bigger selection without paying more money.
Yes, I would definitely download a couple for the flight and then delete them afterwards. I think I was able to get about 3 on my iPad when we flew to Europe last year. I don't have many pictures on my iPad, though, which also takes up a lot of space. You should definitely be able to get 1 and maybe 2 on there.
Does the IPad use the storage cards (SD, micro SD, etc)? I have no idea how an IPad works (I have a Samsung tablet). If they do, could you save movies on an extra card?

iPads do not have any provision for expanding their memory with cards of any sort. It is IMO one of the failings of the design - despite loving my own iPad in every other way.
There are SD card readers that can connect to the Lightning port on an iPad, but moving files back and forth is clunky and slow.
