New runDisney costume guidelines, just released! - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

You may know that Disney banned all costumes for adults in December after terrorist activities around the world. I emailed runDisney to find out what the rules are for running events, and they just released them a few minutes ago. Short answer: yes, you can run in costume, but you have to change before visiting the parks. The rules are quite detailed!
Disney reserves the right to deny admission to or remove any person wearing attire that is considered inappropriate or attire that could detract from the experience of other Guests. All participants and their Guests may dress as their favorite character, but must follow these guidelines as determined solely by Disney.
Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.
Guests who dress like Characters may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests.
Costumes may not contain any weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.
For runDisney participants ages 13 and under:
Costumes and some masks may be worn, as long the mask does not cover the entire face and eyes are visible.
For runDisney participants ages 14 and older:
Layered costumes, that could conceal prohibited items, are not permitted (e.g. Jedi robes).
Costume props, including those that surround the entire body (e.g. Death Star, UP House) are not permitted.
Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground. (e.g. full-length Princess dresses)
Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist.
Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts, and hats are acceptable.
Acceptable accessories include: transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords, and tutus. Headwear may be worn as long as it does not cover the face.
Guests may not wear masks of any kind.
Please note that while costumed attire may be worn during runDisney events, Guests 14 and older are not permitted to wear costumed attire in the theme parks. As a result, Guests may need to change their attire prior to visiting the parks after participating in a runDisney race.

When I ran the Avengers in November, I couldn't believe the elaborate costumes some people were wearing. I couldn't even imagine walking, let alone run, a half marathon in what some were wearing. This the weekend of the Paris bombings and there were no restrictions at that time on costumes.

I'm running the half and the full this weekend and I'll be interested to see how this plays out. People really pride themselves on their costumes at these races. The new guideline won't affect me as the best I do is a Disney inspired running skirt. Boring, I know.
It'll be interesting to see how they enforce this. I'm surprised - but not totally surprised - at how very late in the game they released this info. A LOT of runners are either already there or on their way when they put this out there. So that aspect is stupid.
Although I do think it's about time they curbed some of the craziness in costumes. The full mask thing has been in writing for years. Years! But Amy - who took one of our photos backstage at Avengers in DL? A gentleman in a full body covered Spiderman outfit. Completely covered from head to toe. Couldn't even see his eyes. It was skin tight, so hard to conceal anything, but still. That's a full mask if I've ever seen one!!

That's right Tanya!! I forgot all about him. Remember how "creeped out" we were too by his costume?!
I was also thinking of the guy at our pre-race meet up who was dressed like Gru from Guardians. Now that was a costume you could easily hide something...
So, to help pass the time a little during my final maintenance run today, I listened to a Podcast about the races this weekend. There was a lengthy discussion about some changes that have been made. A lot of those deal with security being tightened for the races and the extra security they have hired. A part of me felt a lot better knowing all that has been put in place to keep us safe; however, the other part of me is feeling more than a little bit nervous that something could happen.
When I volunteered in 2014, I was told about extra security at that time. Hidden, undercover type security. And we weren't supposed to know about it, but our team leader was interrupted and just blurted out the reason why he was interrupted. And then said "uhhhhh, don't tell anybody that!" So I guess security just gets more and more. That's OK though. I don't mind!
Yeah, spiderman was creeeepy!!! Whose phone was that pic on, do you remember? I don't have it.

Just got back from cheering on some runners on the BW and I saw many costumes and even runners running with light sabers. It is pouring rain outside. too.
That was the pic in front of the big Mickey pumpkin, right? It's on my phone want me to send it to you?
Yes please!
And from what I'm reading on FB posts, it sounds like getting your costume accessories past security is a total crapshoot. Some are getting stopped and asked to toss their large items, and some are not. It's not consistent whatsoever.
Example: In the Dopey group on FB, one woman was asked to toss her American flag on a pole that she intended to carry the entire 10K. In the same post, others were posting pics of other runners who were running the race with their American flag poles. Completely inconsistent!
