With autumn officially here, cooler temperatures will be here for many areas very soon! (if they aren't already here!) When do you turn your furnace on? On a specific date? When the temperature outside gets to a certain degree?
What will you set your thermostat at once you turn on your furnace?

So, today it is 54 degrees here. Next week we'll be up in the mid-70s again.

We don't have a furnace. Our HVAC system is electric cool and gas heat.

We don't turn on the heat until the house gets down below 70 consistantly. We keep our winter temp inside at 68. We try to heat the house with open curtains/blinds in sun facing windows to start. I doubt we'll have the heat on until sometime in November? I've never really paid attention to when it happens.

I set our thermostat at 67 degrees and the heat has come on only once. I really don't want to start using the furnace until much later in October if not November. I keep telling my family, "That's what sweaters are for!"

With the cooler temps and winds we're having I'm about ready to crank the furnace on now but DH hasn't checked it over yet. I'm not ready to start paying higher gas bills yet either so we'll just dress warmer and stick it out. When the indoor temp starts to drop towards the mid 60's then we'll turn it on.

Our thermostat is day/time controlled and for during the day it is set at 67 and for the bedtime it is set for 60. However with that being said I never let it come on in October (even though right now at 10:18 it is 52 and raining here). I will put on a sweatshirt or whatever. It has to be in the low 40's for me to let it on and even then we put on the pellet stove. :-)

I wait as long as I possibly can. I try to wait until at least November 1st. It is about 48 today in RI, but will be in the high 60s/low 70s next week. However, I work for an insurance company so I know how important it is to have some heat going when it gets real cold. Frozen/burst pipes are no joke.

As soon as I get chilled inside my apartment I flip the heat on. I've been known to go from heat to a/c in a day.

We use a programmable thermostat for both our A/C and gas furnace, so it automatically switches between cooling and heating without our having to do a thing. In the winter our day time temp is set at 70 since we are now both home all day.

We don't have a set date when we switch over to heat, just when I notice I am more cold throughout the day I will turn the heat on. I usually keep the heat set at 70.

Usually by the end of October, we'll turn the heat on. The weather can be up and down at the beginning of the month. Today is is in the 50's, but it is suppose to be in the 60's next week, and I'll have the windows open.

We have heating available year round and just set the temperature accordingly, so it comes on whenever it needs to - we have it set at 72F.

We like our home to be about 72. The furnace comes on when it does, I don't care if it's July, if it's cold the furnace is on.

I don't have a specific date. I try to go as long as possible before turning the furnace on. When I do, I usually keep it at 72.

I'm going to sound like the world's biggest cheapskate here.

I won't turn on the heat until I am uncomfortably cold walking into the house. I have to be utterly miserable to turn it on before the first of November.

After it's on, I try to leave the thermostat on 65, although I get too hot under the covers, so I turn it down when we go to bed. If I remember, I also turn it down when we leave for work/school in the morning...usually 62 both times.

Then there are the times when my mom comes over. The thermostat goes up significantly, since she seems to think I'm part Eskimo.

I turned my heat on today. i came home and the temp was 68 in my house....so I set the temp to 70 and it came on once, I was cold when we came in from the rain so glad for a little heat.
