As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

So I had mentioned in a previous thread about my fears that the wildfire season here in Alaska was going to be bad...looks like I was right.
Currently there is a bad fire burning in the Willow area (around 80-90 miles north of Anchorage. It is threatening basically the ENTIRE community/city of Willow. Already there has been loss of buildings and some animals lost , but so far, no human loss of life.
The Sockeye Fire (as they are calling it) started on Sunday afternoon and is already pushing 8,000 acres. It has been declared a disaster and they now have a Type 1 incident management team -- these are the guys reserved for the nation's most complex fires and disaster scenarios -- in charge of the response as of 7 a.m. Tuesday.
The whole of Southcentral Alaska is really pulling together and doing what they can for all the displaced. The State Fair grounds is taking in horses that have been evacuated. Other mushers are hosting other teams - in some cases more that tripling the number of dogs they usually have. I have to say....I am impressed with my fellow Alaskans - everyone is really stepping up to the plate!
Also burning is the Card Street Fire in the Sterling area on the Kenai...near the same are that burned during the Funny River Fire last summer. This fire started Monday afternoon and is up to around 1,200 acres according to the ADN article.
My DDad has a friend down this way. When I talked to him yesterday he was about 8-9 "river miles from the fire. Not sure exactly what that is in miles "as the crow flies," but I'll be checking on him again today. And a friend of mine who lives in Tampa has her parents up here for the summer at their cabin in the...you guessed it...Funny River Road area - they were evacuated last year and they could have it happen again this year.
The smoke in Anchorage is building. Right now everywhere smells like a campfire. People with breathing issues are going to have a tough time.
Please keep all these people in your thoughts and send lots of pixies....I'll keep you posted. And don't forget the Hot Shots and all the firefighters!! They are doing all they can to stop these infernos!!

Our Boy Scout troop may have to rethink the rafting trip they have planned for this weekend....it ends at Skilak Lake...which is right in the same area as the Card Street Fire.

Alaska is so beautiful! I hate to hear of all this damage and the losses the people and wildlife are suffering. While on our Norwegian cruise last week, a number of us were commenting that although Norway was gorgeous, we preferred Alaska. One of the reasons we all seemed to agree upon was the wildlife in Alaska.
Sockeye didn't get much worse...it's pretty "stagnant" but not under control as of yet. Looks like the firefighters managed to keep the growth of this fire to 43 acres!! Amazing, considering how quickly it grew in the first two days.
The lightning mentioned above started two new fires in this area, but they seem to be under control at this time.
Card Street is still growing, now at around 2,000 acres burned or burning...and with Sockeye still going, resources are stretched. The evil lightning also started two fires in the Cooper Landing area, which is about 33 miles from Sterling (where the Card Street Fire is).
Evacuations continue in all areas, no loss of human life but the cost in property and memories (as well as some pets) has been staggering. And it's only the middle of June. This is going to be a long summer for the smoke jumpers and firefighters...and for all Alaskans.

Sending prayers and pixies! I didn't realize that Alaska had a wildfire season. I hear a lot about California on the news; they should be telling us about Alaska as well. Wishing more rain--without the thunder and lightning--for the state!
I didn't realize that Alaska had a wildfire season.!
Yep...we get quite a few wildfires every year...however, usually we don't have too do much more than just monitor them since they are often out in the middle of no-where with no structures to burn. The fires actually help rejuvenate the forest and are good for the soil.
HOWEVER...when the fires are in populated areas such as the ones we are currently battling, it can get ugly.
So the fires caused by lightning last night are getting a good foot hold, which is not good for the firefighters! The two fires near Cooper Landing grown. One, a 20-acre blaze now known as the Russian Lake Fire is estimated at over 1,000 acres after less than 24 hours and a half-acre fire now called the Juneau Lake Fire has burned about 60 acres.
Good news tho...the Sockeye Fire has been kept to a standstill today!!

I know...I have been checking msn.com and have yet to see anything on any of the fires. I'm rather disappointed. I think the stories have been picked up by other news feeds, but it doesn't seem to be a big deal for a lot of the new channels. Makes me sad.
