Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

A vacation question

For everyone employed, how much vacation time do you get each year? Does your company give you a comprehensive time off package for time off or do you also get separate sick leave?

Re: A vacation question

Well, I can kinda take vacation when ever I want. I work per diem which just means I work when I want. Nice bonus of being a nurse!

Re: A vacation question

Vacation:
0-4 yrs 10 days
5-9 yrs 15 days
10-19 yrs 20 days
20-29 yrs 25 days
30 + yrs 30 days

And you'd be shocked to see how many people have over 30 years.

Short term disability (paid sick time) is separate but also based on years of service. Basically, at one year you have 1 week at full pay, then it goes up to 10 weeks full pay at 5 years all the way up to 26 weeks full pay for 10 years or more.

Re: A vacation question

We earn 2 (16 hours) days per month and can accumulate how ever much we want but it has to be down to 240 hours (30 days) by our yearly anniversary date. And we can take vacation whenever we want and for how long we want as long as its approved by our supervisor.

Sick leave is only earned at 8 hours per month and there's no cap on how much you can accumulate.

Plus, we have one personal day that has to be used each year.

Re: A vacation question

I get three weeks paid vacation a year. Two weeks whenever I want to take them and one week between Christmas and New Year's (I get paid double for that week, vacation paycheck and Christmas bonus). However, I can take a vacation whenever I want other than that as long as there is someone to cover, but I don't get paid. I also don't get paid sick days but I can take off whenever I need to because I'm sick, my son's sick or I just need a day off. I work four days a week in a doctor's office but I can work more if I need more hours (I work using a laptop so I'm allowed to also do my work from home).

Re: A vacation question

I have four weeks; based on time with company I'm supposed to have three, but they threw me an extra one. As for sick time, no set amount. Take what you need when you need it, paid. No personal days, but you may be feeling a bit ill on days that you need to get some stuff done at home...

Re: A vacation question

I work for two wonderful people. I get two weeks "vacation" per year, lots of "days off" to hang out with my daughter (when she has days off from school), time off at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I have "sick leave" when I am sick. No set time. I had two back surgeries in two years time (LOTS of sick time there) and some days I could only work for 1-2 hours.

One year they gave me an "extra" week of time off to go with the Disney trip they gave me and my daughter!

Re: A vacation question

I get 20 days of paid vacation and two personal days every fiscal year. For the most part I can take it whenever I want provided I'm not swamped or there's nothing big going on. We also accumulate sick time at an odd rate (not too sure what the ratio really is) but I think I've accumulated about a month and a half of sick time. We also get off for two weeks during the Christmas holidays which isn't included in the vacation time.

Re: A vacation question

I typically only take one week off and have been paid for it. This year however, we just got back from Disney and my boss was kind enough to pay me for it. Plus, he pays me VERY well per hour (I typically work 23 hours), so I can't complain too much. And he threw in a nice bonus in my paycheck before we left.

No real paid sick time, sometimes he'll pay me, sometimes not. Luckily I don't get sick very often and DH works nights so, unless the kids are REALLY sick (like when they had their tonsils and adnoids out and when they had the chicken pox), I haven't had to take too much sick time.

Re: A vacation question

I have 22 paid vacation per year, plus any flexi time I work over my 37 hours a week - at the moment, I'm up to 10.5 hours and in the last six months, that's added up to another 6 days. If I stay there five years, then my paid vacation goes up to 25 days a year.

There's nothing about how much sick leave you can have over here, although generally they won't pay you your full wage once you get past the first month. I think the way it works at our place is that if you have 10 days off sick in any one year then after that point, you have to have a sick note from the doctor for every single day you have off (usually you can self certify for up to five working days).

Re: A vacation question

my dh gets 30 days a year of annual leave or "vacation" time.

He can go into the hole(or owe) for up to a month I think it is if he needs to(emergency, etc)

He has no set sick leave. If he gets sick, he is off until he gets better, be it a week or the 6 weeks he had to be off when he had his apnea surgery.

Re: A vacation question

We have a great package, IMHO.

15 vacation days.
10 sick/personal days, that we can basically use however we wish. We are not allowed to carry anything forward into the next year. They pay a percentage of the sick/personal days at end of year, so mostly we plan on using them up. Once I'm there 5 years, I'll get another 5 vacation days per year.

Not bad, huh?

Re: A vacation question

Right now I get 10 days paid vacation and 3 paid personal days. (Been here for almost 3 years). When I hit the 5 year mark my vaca will go up to 3 weeks, and 4 weeks at 10 years. We get separate sick days, I think we get 5 or 6.

Paid health insurance though, nothing out of my check for my coverage of myself and DH, so I can't complain about vacation!

Re: A vacation question

DH has been working for the Canadian government for over 16 years. I think he's up to 5 weeks paid vacation now. Unfortunately, there's only about 2 or 3 other people in all of Canada who can do his job, so it's really hard for him to take his holidays and when he does, he has his cell phone turned on and checks his laptop 2 or 3 times a day. What he cannot use up, they let him bank a week and then force him to take a monetary payout for the rest (which doesn't work out to our benefit because they take 45% tax plus deductions off of that) He also gets separate sick leave and separate bereavement leave.
