Costumes for MNSSHP for those who pack light - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

We're not going until next year (Sept 23-Oct 1) but I figured this year's after Halloween sales would be a great time to get our costumes in order. And maybe this would help those going this year. We tend to travel light and avoid checking bags whenever we can. Since we also like to rent a car, we plan on just hitting up Target or Walmart when we get to the area for most of our toiletries and the like. A lot of Halloween costumes are so elaborate, I feel like they'll take up valuable luggage space. So suggestions for adult costumes that are easy to pack? No kids, just the two of us. Bonus points if we can transform regular clothes. I'm feeling not very creative at the moment, I've only dressed up one Halloween since college, so it's not something I do regularly.
The sole time I went to a MNSSHP prior to this I wore a Disney Halloween tee shirt and called it a night. But I wanna do something just a little more creative (even if it's getting a zombie Mickey tee and some face paint).
Thanks in advance for the help!
Large brown t-shirts, white cloves, velcro and some felt face parts make you Mr & Mrs Potato Head
Pirate costumes are super easy. White tee shirts, lack pants or shorts, eye patch, bandanna, gold hoop earring, wide black belt

These two ideas are easy and require very little room in your suitcase and/or make use of items you are bringing with you anyway.
Go as bags of trash: large contractor trash bags, cut holes for legs and arms (draw string will go around your head). fill with crumpled sheets of paper or used newspapers.
Go as dirty laundry: buy collapse-able laundry bags or hampers; cut holes so you can step into them; fill with clothes and the towels from your room; use a washcloth or pair of undies for a hat.
Have fun!

Do you have a Spirit store near you? A huge majority of their costumes come in clear plastic pouches that are very easy to slip into a back pack or carry on. They aren't usually too pricey either.

Great ideas guys, hope others are getting ideas too. I like the pirate idea & it's easy to translate to his and hers (although I don't know if I want to listen to him talk like a pirate again, I had to listen to it all day yesterday! LOL). And all the accessories are small & easy to tuck in a bag.
But keep em coming!
I do indeed have a Spirit store, one just opened in a Staples that closed. One drawback in my case is that I'm plus sized (I wear an 18 to a 22 depending on brand so that can be difficult, but maybe that'll be stuff they'll put on clearance?)

I'm pretty sure they have quite a bit of plus size options. Also check their website - if you get on their mailing list they send you coupons (email list).

Depends if you want easy but creative costumes, I think. Practically everybody thinks of pirate outfits.
I like the clothes hamper or bags of trash ideas, clever, but for the fact that either would be really warm. Even with cooler night temps, you'd be dripping in no time if wearing a trashbag, much less one stuffed with crumpled paper.

Good point on the heat. Worth noting we're going in late September so it'll be very warm. I'll just take any suggestions, easy, creative, whatever. Good point on pirate being probably a common thing.
I'm a plus sizer too - in the same range you are. We went to the MNSSHP in 2012, and it's just us two as well. Here's what we did:
Me; Cheshire cat shirt from Disney store, Cheshire cat ears & tail from ebay (under $10), regular capris. Outcome: got my tummy poked by the Queen of Hearts during the parade! (I know...I'm 45 years old going on 12!)
WookiePants: Grumpy shirt from the Disney store, Dwarf hat from ebay (under $10), regular clothes. Outcome: He didn't complain about "dressing up". Bonus!
An additional benefit is that the accessories work with your regular clothes, but turn it into a "theme" of sorts. The accessories don't take up much room and won't impede your movement either through the streets or on the rides. The last thing you want is something elaborate that'll cause a ruckus when you're trying to get into a doombuggy or something! Also...it means you can walk around the park in "normal" clothes throughout the day and just put on your accessories (which fit in a purse or pocket) to create your costume!
Good luck! With a little creativity, you can come up with something superawesome that won't require a sherpa to bring along! We absolutely loved the MNSSHP, and I hope you will too!
I was leaning toward something like that. I can wear the largest size in the regular Disney Store shirts as well as the plus size, so it gives me options. I love the idea of adding the tail and ears. An easy way to add to an outfit that is usable on another day.
Disney Style had this post yesterday (I saw it today) with eleventh hour costumes. Post is too late for MNSSHP this year but something to keep in mind for next year (or you know if you still need a costume for tonight) Eleventh Hour Costume Ideas | Disney Style
So suggestions for adult costumes that are easy to pack?
DGF did the MNSSHP experience this year. She made two costumes (originally planned to attend three parties), both of which she made herself.
One was Lilo, in her red dress. The dress was the only thing she needed to bring; she figured she could stop at the Polynesian on the way (and in constume), and ask for a lei to finish it off. And she figured right, they were only too happy to oblige!
The second was a Wilderness Explorer, a la Up. She packed a pair of brown pants, a yellow t-shirt, a yellow baseball cap with a quicky WE badge tack-stitched on, and the real show-stopper of the costume, a merit-badge sash with something over 30 badges ... many of them made up entirely by her. (Like the only one whose glue failed, allowing it to drop off somewhere in the parks: a DeadMau5 icon, of all things! Seem sDisney Magic can get a bit jealous, eh?)
Both quite simple, yet creative; and while the way she did the merit badges made the sash a bit on the heavy side, it still packed SMALL. And the rest of both outfits was completely negligible in terms of suitcase room.
