PTR-PHM15 In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

PTR-PHM15 In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers
In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers:
A Tale of Friends Planning & Training for PHM 2015
Bet you're asking yourself right now what do cupcakes and running have in common? While training for TOT 10-Miler last year, I came to discover that not only could I be a runner (and actually enjoy it), but there are many different kinds of runners. Some focus on costumes, some on times and places, some are in it for the bling and some hope not to see balloons. Through my adventures in this new world of running, I realized that I'm a Cupcake Runner. And it turns out I know quite a few other “Cupcakes.”
Cupcake Runners are those who look at the race as an experience and while the actual “run” itself may not be so much fun it is those who you surround yourself with while running and where you are running makes the experience like a cupcake…pure enjoyment. It’s about doing our best and accomplishing our goals, while at the same experiencing the magic around us. We aren’t concerned about what place we come in or what time the clock says, we just want to finish without seeing balloons or the inside of a bus and to proudly have that medal placed around our necks. While we may not come across as being very serious, we are. We will have trained and trained hard, making sure that we can go the distance…
Our goal for PHM2015 is to have fun, laugh, and enjoy (YES, SAID ENJOY) each step that makes 13.1 miles (and for some of us even farther, hence the Glass Slippers)…while encouraging and pushing (maybe even dragging) each other across the finish line! Then afterwards celebrate with one heck of a WDW Cupcake Crawl (and by this time we will probably be crawling). Most importantly it is a chance to spend time with a group of supportive, amazing Disney loving friends. So whether you are a Cupcake Runner or a any other type of runner you are invited as we assemble our cast of Disney Queens and Princesses to train for the PHM 2015 (as well as other races in the next year) and plan a trip full of memories and of course lots of CUPCAKES!

Our cast list is always subject to change! Life happens and when it does sometimes Disney Trips have to be put on hold...or we meet new friends along the way who want to join in on the fun! We welcome all that want to train with us, laugh with us, and most importantly celebrate with us!
You will notice while the race part of this trip is about Queens & Princesses, but many of our loved ones are coming along in support. However, don't worry there is going to be lots of girl time scheduled...
This is me, Tammie, your narrator of this PTR. Hopefully, everyone else will drop in from time to time and add their plans and stories. I love to plan and dream Disney trips as well as weave stories and have been known as the Queen of cliff hangers in my TRs!
My Real Life Side: I am a 40 something Queen who most importantly is a wife and mother of 3. I am a curriculum specialist for my school district…my job is to help teachers improve their classroom instruction mainly in the area of elementary mathematics. Most of the time I love my job, but I often find myself between a rock and a hard place (between teachers and building administration) which is not a fun place to be. My hobbies include scrapbooking (venturing into the digital side and love it), following my children in all of their activities and reading.
My Disney Side: This will be my 4th trip to the world and hoping it will be the best one yet! My favorite Disney characters include Queen Elinor, Rapunzal, Grumpy (Once Upon a Time Character), Marie, Ariel, and Gus from Cinderella. My favorite view has to be Cinderella’s Castle with Wishes fireworks! I think I could just sit all day long and gaze at the castle. I prefer the more thrill type rides…ToT, EE, and RnRC but I also like the competitive ones like Buzz Lightyear and TSM. Dole Whips are probably my favorite Disney food, and of course I can’t wait to cupcake crawl in celebration of PHM and maybe finally get me some Zeppoles!
My Running Side: If you would have told me 18 months ago that I would start thinking of myself as a runner, I would have fallen on the floor in a fit of laughter. Up until that moment I never ran a day in my life (other than in high school cross training for varsity swimming about a million years ago…WHICH I HATED), but then the excuse of running a race for a Disney Trip took over…I will run for Disney Trips and Dole Whips! After many false starts into the world of running, I learned about Jeff Galloway and my whole outlook about running changed and I learned I could be successful as well as love running. I train and run races using the Galloway method of running and walking intervals. While I might not be fast, I am out there and enjoying some much needed me time. My tink & pooh sized body likes to fight against running, but I don’t let that stop me. This will be my 2nd & 3rd Disney Race, as I completed the ToT 10-miler last year! I am hoping to compete in the Glass Slipper challenge at PHM 2015! As for other races, I tend to like races where there are lots of people and I can blend into the crowds, which is hard to do where I live. I am hoping to find a 5K in April and a 10K in June, plus Debra and I are doing the Rock & Roll Las Vegas Half in November. My run motto is “What Doesn’t Kill Me, Makes Me Stronger.”
This is Ab my teenage daughter. Looking forward to some mom and daughter time on this trip, because before I know it she will be headed off to college.
Real Life Side: She will be a senior in high school at the time of the trip. Ab is simply amazing because anything she sets her mind to, she ends up doing and doing quite well! She is a straight A student and currently junior class president. Her 2 favorite subjects in school are Latin (which she is Texas State Champion in for Roman Life and Latin Mottos) and Chemistry (dreams of being a Nurse Practitioner for Doctors without Borders). She has just completed her Gold Award in Girl Scouts (like Eagle in Boy Scouts). Her hobbies include running, swimming, reading, spending time with her friends and watching Walking Dead/Breaking Bad.
Disney Side: This will be Ab’s 2nd trip to WDW. Her favorite Disney characters are Rapunzel, Marie, Dory and Tinkerbell. Her favorite thing to do at WDW is character meet & greets, which I never thought she would get into. Like me, she loves Dole Whips and her favorite restaurant is Via Napoli! Her favorite attractions are the People Mover, touring World Showcase, and EE.
Running Side: Ab is a long distance runner. This past fall she placed 3rd in state for 1A schools and her girls team won state for the 2nd year in a row. During track season (spring) she is her school’s long distance runner competing in both the 1 mile and 2 mile events. This will be her first Disney Race.
Great start! I love your "cupcake runner" description as I fit into that category as well! (Plus I mean, the more we run, the more cupcakes we can eat, right? RIGHT?! ) I'm not sure what part of Texas you are in but I have a ton of resources for finding 5ks (and really all the other distances, but those are what I do) in Dallas and a lot of them sprawl out into other areas if you need any help finding ones (and if you want to do any in Dallas, let me know!)
Can't wait to hear how your training and planning goes!
I love your start!! Yep, fellow cupcake runner here. I agree, local races are harder to do because of the fewer amount of people. I didn't know you were doing the Las Vegas RnR Half too - wow!! That's awesome. Venturing outside the runDisney bubble... Your daughter is amazing, wow. I'm sure you guys will have a fantastic time planning this trip!

Your daughter should make the training and the race much more fun. From that list of accomplishments, she should push the training. I do like your attitude about the race. The goal is to finish and get on with the cupcakes.

Let the Training Begin
Galloway 5K Week 1
Total Distance: 15.04 miles
To get ready for PHM I have decided to work my way back through my Jeff Galloway apps starting with my 5K, then the 10K and then on to the ½ Marathon. I really like having the workouts predetermined for me and set up in an easy app to follow, plus the fact that I can set the interval timer within the app. The app also has Jeff built in doing a little coaching while I am running. The only think I really do not like about the app is that it adjusts my music for the pace and I end up hearing the same songs over and over again. I am thinking however, that I might get one of JG’s internal timers and use MapMyRun to track my progress (still using JG app to tell me how far for each workout) so that I can use my own playlist.
I actually started my training for PHM a week ago. The weather was so nice, so I decided to take advantage and get out there! So here is a summary of Week 1:
Saturday (Feb 15-Walk): 3.1 mi/14:47 mm paceBeautiful Saturday afternoon, time to get out there and get going…did a 5K today walking! I am so ready for it! Looking at my pace time I am in a little bit of a shock. I can walk faster than I ran this time last year!
Sunday (Feb 16-Walk): 3.4 mi/14:29 mm pace
I am a little stunned at my pace as I walked the entire time and still came in under the magic 16 mm pace. WOW!
Monday (Feb 17-OFF)
Tuesday (Feb 18-Interval Workout 5K Wk 1/Day 1): 2.22 mi/14:34 mm paceAfter finishing the interval workout of 1.2 miles, I went ahead and did another mile walking afterwards.
Wednesday (Feb 19-Walk): 2.04 mi/15:43 mm pace
My shins were giving me problems during today’s walk. I am sure that I have pushed myself too hard too fast, but I just feel the need to go (which tends to get my body to fight against me). I know that I have a year to go until PHM. The weather has been so nice the last couple of days, but I know that it is not even spring yet and there will be days where I can’t get out…trying to take advantage while I can.
Thursday(Feb 20-Interval Workout 5K Wk1/Day 2): 2.14 mi/14:24 mm pace
Some issues again with the shins but I pushed through the required run workout of 1.2 miles and did another mile walking afterwards. It was a lot cooler today around 47 during my workout…I hate the rollercoaster ride with the cold fronts, ready to go!
Friday (Feb 21-OFF)
Saturday (Feb 22-Interval Workout 5k Wk1/Day 3): 2.14 mi/13:58 mm pace
Today was my first “long” run workout of the training program. LOL, it was really not much longer than the short runs this week my required distance was 1.3 miles and I ended up doing about 0.8 more and tried to continue the interval going and my pace dropped quite a bit. I am playing around with a 30/30 sec interval. There was a little shin issues going on, but I am learning that this is just my body.
