Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Chaperoning my son's band and new technology

My son's high school marching band will be traveling to WDW in March to march in a parade and visit WDW. I am a chaperone. We were just told last week at a chaperone meeting that we will not be getting Magic Bands because Disney is having some kinks in using them with groups. As part of a large group, we have not been given any individual confirmation numbers.

My question is this, without Magic Bands, how can my kids use the new FP+? I don't know if they will have smart phones or not. I am guessing they can use the kiosks to set them up, but when I chaperoned two years ago, we only had flimsy plastic tickets and not the regular credit card style key, so I am concerned these type tickets won't hold onto the FP+ for them.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

They will probably have to do it at the Kiosk.

I am curious to see how it works for you. My son is going with his high school marching band in April. They are staying off premises though so they will be using the kiosk. We are going but not chaperoning. I think a 24 hour bus ride full of teenagers was not something I wanted to do .

The marching band went in 2011 also. They stayed at ASMu on that trip. They stopped at AK when they first got there. They were given their park tickets at that time. This trip is similar except they are stopping at Blizzard Beach first. This year they are marching at WDW and have a workshop at Epcot.

Have fun. It is a great experience.

Even without Magic Bands, you should still be able to use My Disney Experience to make FP+ selections. The big wrinkle is that you must have a confirmed resort reservation and a park pass linked to your MDX account in order to make selections in advance. You may not be getting individual confirmation numbers, but it's worth trying to enter the group's overall confirmation number into your MDX account to see if that enables FP+ selection.

Others have reported similar problems with large groups - no confirmation numbers and no advance tickets, means no advance FP+ selections. Which, IMHO, stinks on ice for those unlucky enough to be going to WDW as part of a large group.

Worst-case scenario is that each member of the group will have to abide by the off-site Guest rules, which are that they can make 3 FP+ selection per day, same-day only.

My advice is, rock the boat! Complain, both through the band's coordinator, and by calling Disney yourself, about the fact that your group is being denied perks that all on-site Guests are supposed to get, namely advance selection of FP+ and Magic Bands.

Aside from that, be sure to advise all of the chaperones and parents that they should create MDX accounts for each person (adult or kid) who is attending. Each person can still link their tickets and dining ADRs (when they get them), and can still use the accounts for PhotoPass access and to modify their FP+ selections in-park, even if they can't make those FP+ selections in advance. And, each person link the others in the group to their account as a Friend, thus allowing everyone in the group to view the whole group's PhotoPass pics.

Besides, if Disney does get this mess with Magic Bands and FP+ straightened out in time, already having an MDX account will make it that much easier for each person to use them.

If the kids use the kiosk, will the kiosk save their Faspass+ to their tickets?

We are staying at ASM and its really agravating they don't have this all worked out!

This is my second time chaperoning them, and it's a lot of fun. But I dread the 16 hour bus trip each way!...

Well, two things:

1: Nothing is "saved to" your ticket. Your ticket has nothing saved on its magnetic strip or RFID chip other than its own unique identifying serial number. Everything is saved on the WDW computer system, and the ticket serves as a key to unlock that saved stuff - just like your money is saved in the bank, not your ATM card, and your ATM card merely allows you to access your bank account.

2: Yes, if you don't have a Magic Band, your park tickets do act as the access method for FP+ selections. When you make the selections at a kiosk, you tap your park pass to the lighted Mickey-head reader to access your MDX account, and when you enter a FastPass Return queue at a ride, you tap your ticket on a similar reader to prove that you do have a FP+ selection at that time.

Hm... 16 hours on a bus full of teenagers. With musical instruments. Hello, is this Hell? Yeah, listen, I've got a great idea for your next expansion room...

That should make the ride a little quieter.

YogaKitty when are you going? I'm also chaperoning our band in March. Our kids are doing workshops instead of marching.
Yes, the bus ride will be a joy.........................
We've been told that we will have magic bands for our hotel but not our passes -

Stephaniechiz - we are leaving this Saturday and arriving on Sunday morning. We did the workshops two years ago.

We have been updated that we will have Magic Bands only for room keys. Our park tickets will be the tyvek type cards. AND I have been told by the travel agent NOT to link our tickets to MDX or it will cause all kinds of chaos!!! Just this morning got a reservation number for my room, but without tickets to tie in guess we still can't do any FPs ahead ot time.

When will you be there? Thsi is my second time to chaperone this trip and that bus ride is really looooong!
