When is a refrigerator .....not a refrigerator..... - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

When is a refrigerator .....not a refrigerator.....
.......when I tell someone at the concierge desk at POP (somewhat jokingly) that, "my fridge is acting more like a microwave oven than a fridge" (meaning: it's not getting cold...it was actually warmer ), and I'm told, "Well, it's not really a fridge.... it's more like a cooler".
Well....when all the hullabaloo was made about there now being fridges in the value rooms....I was part of the excited masses. But...to be told to my face that it's "not really a refrigerator" .......leaves me more than a little miffed. I put 20 cans of soda in there at 5pm and they are as warm now as they were then.
Not that I routinely do it .....but I shudder to think about the results if I had put a 1/2 gallon of milk in there. And....what about someone that needs earnest chilling of medication?
When it comes to Disney .....I have to put forth a concerted effort to find anything wrong. But this is blatent misrepresentation of room amenities as listed on the web site. And...to top it off....they put it in the chest of drawers .....eating up storage space which is already hard to come by.
.....not sure if anyone else ever brought up this issue?
Same coolers at POFQ, did they explain how to use it? It was a learning curve foe me. Can't put too much in it an cant block part of it, sorry don't remember what part they can tell you. When I followed their directions it did cool our drinks, just had to restock frequently. Hope that helps, have a magical vacation

....info much appreciated....thanks.
....of course ...in order to use a REFRIGERATOR ....based on my +48 years of REFRIGERATOR USING EXPERIENCE you plugged it in...it got COLD .....you put stuff in it that would benefit from said cold.. (..oh ...I'm actually 51 ....but would bet that the 1st three years of my life were pretty much fridge-free). Instructions that would rival those needed to go extended deep-sea diving .....shouldn't be needed to have cold soda and beer.
....wow!!! A big Mickey Head shaped light bulb just lit up over my 23 yr old daughter 's head! ! She said if it's really "a cooler" I should unplug it.....flip it on its back ....fill it with ice from the machine ....and use it like my Coleman at home. Wonder if it's water-tight?
I noticed the same problem of the refrigerator/cooler not really cooling when we visited in June. I thought it was probably just our room, but based on the OP, I'm now convinced it's the type of "coolers" WDW is using. Before I called maintenance, I decided to pull it out, unplug and re-plug it to see if that helped. It did. It was almost as if it needed to be reset. After that, it never got icy cold, but it did keep drinks coolish. As our week went on, I noticed that we had to be careful not to jiggle the fridge too much or it would shut off again...and I hear you and can support that it was warm inside, not the least bit cool.
I'll bet Disney winds up changing out these coolers. I think they are going to get lots of complaints and requests for maintenance.
Hmmmmmm
BTW, our "cooler" really wasn't running. A few things is all we had in it. They were NOT getting cold or cool. They remained room temperature. I don't think these machines are very effective.
Yeah, just put a few things in at first, then when they are cold you can add more. Also if you're ever staying in a room where the fridge is enclosed in a cabinet, if you leave the cabinet door open the fridge will work better.
Here is a link to a discussion on these "coolers" in which one person says she wouldn't recommend putting anything like milk or eggs in the cooler, since it doesn't cool like a frig does.
......sorta' reminds me of Carousel of Progress. "Our new ice box holds a 50 lb. block of ice.....and our milk won't sour as fast".
...I took a screen shot of the POP website with the amenities list .......let's just say that when I get home ....Disney and I will be having a little chat.
......things like this make me think that WDW frowns on those that furnish their own food in their rooms .....and hope to have more sales generated in the food courts because of the questionable longevity of food kept in the in room cool..... sorry mini-fridges.

Interesting, I think I now understand why the CM was marking our ressie as needing a medical frig. From what you guys are describing, I don't think I want to trust it to keep DH's insulin cold.
Guess I will be calling to add the medical necessity to our reservation....we need to keep DS's insulin cold too!! I just assumed that the frig at POR would be a real frig and not a "cooler." We never kept much in them so I haven't really ever thought about it.

Hummmm. . . I just assumed that since the POFQ says it has friges I was ok with my "refrigeration required" meds. This appears not to be the case. I can call and tell them that I have a legitimate need for a frige not cooler. Thanks for bringing this up, JerseyDad, who knew?
Does anyone know if this means that they have a few rooms "set aside" with refrigerator instead of a cooler, or if they deliver the additional appliance to whatever room you are assigned?

Yeah, me too....and they best not move us some where odd.....we are booked in to a Royal Room and that is what we are paying for so they had best be moving the correct type of frig in not moving us some where else!

Interesting. This trip will be our first with the new fridges in values. We had one when we stayed at POFQ a couple years ago and it froze our beverages.

.......regarding "availability" of 'real' refrigerators: The night I questioned the function of the "fridge"....POP concierge sent a maintenance worker to check the "fridge". I asked, "don't you have any real refrigerators"....and was told point blank, "No"!
....so to those of you that need real cooling power for meds......I'd start calling the resorts now and get some alternate method set up. If it won't keep dairy fresh...it's questionable if fragile meds will be protected.
