‘Dry drowning’ claims 10-year-old’s life - TODAY Health

Here is a link with a story about dry drowning. In this story its about a boy who ended up drowning hours after he had gotten out of the pool. It can happen to children from swimming and even from baths. Just something to keep in mind. When I saw this I had a long talk with my daughter about swimming and to my DH about not dunking or throwing her. She tends to inhale when she is being dunked and or thrown into the water. We have a talk every summer about not inhaling water, although its not easy.

Yes very sad the boy I believe was from SC. I can't bear to watch it again. I pray for his mother all the time...she still can't believe it could really happen. Poor thing if I could turn back the hands of time I would for this woman it breaks my heart every time. I look for the signs every time we go to the pool, but they are so similar to a child just being tired it's so hard to tell.

A child in Indiana died the same way last year. He also was unused to swimming and had been really excited to go to a pool.
The poor families who this happens to must be devastated. However, I feel the need to remind people it IS rare. It happens, but not very often, that's the reason it's on the national news.

I am familiar with this story- I was still working in EMS at the time but didn't go on this particular call. What is missing from that article is a couple of things that make it all the more sad. This was an autistic child and sometimes they don't react well to new situations. The family removed the child from the pool immediately when it became clear he wasn't going to handle it that day and left. When they got back to their apartment the mother lay with the child in a darkened bedroom until he calmed down and eventually went to sleep. She said she normally did this after her son became upset.
Here is the kicker- I can't remember if it was the mother or the uncle but one of them was arrested and charged with homicide by child abuse. Witnesses at the pool told police the child was terrified and screaming during the 10 minutes or so he was in the pool. The local prosecutor held the belief that people with autistic children should "no better than to upset them" It took several months before a local attorney could convince the prosecutors office to drop the charges. Apparently it wasn't enough for this poor woman to lose her child. She also had to listen to news conferences where she was called a bad mother and told she killed her child.

I just want to say that this can happen to any child in the pool or in any type of body of water. I don't care if there's a life guard on duty my child is by my side. I get a little freaked about swimming. Even though this is rare, I just wanted to put it out there with summer being here and all.
