Disney's Grand Californian --- this time a huge disappointment - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Disney's Grand Californian --- this time a huge disappointment
This was our fifth and last stay at the Grand Californian. Yes, location is very much a plus, but that is where the "grandness" stops. Service at this hotel has definitely gone down since our first stay here last September. I must say that our check in with Kevin at the Front Desk was a pleasure. He was so accommodating and found us a room near an elevator as I requested. And the bellman who delivered our luggage, Luis, was also very pleasant. I thought "wow, our vacation was off to a great start. " Unfortunately, this was where the great ended.
We had our thermostat set low because we like it comfortably cool. Woke up at 3 AM feeling so warm. As soon as I got out of bed and stepped on the floor, the A/C went on, which led me to believe that the A/C is set off by a motion detector. I didn't say anything about it until my husband complained about it later that morning. We left for the parks at 9 AM, returned after 1:30 PM and the room was not cleaned. Sorry, I can understand if the hotel was at full occupancy, but it was relatively empty. I picked up the phone to call the front desk about both issues and of all things -- the phone is dead. That was the final straw. I went down to the front desk and asked to be able to leave the following morning without a penalty. I'm not sleeping another night in a room where we can't climate control ourselves, which we have to return to for a midday break and it hasn't been cleaned and doesn't have a working phone. I told the front desk person about these issues, told him that I am a retired Disney (Florida) cast member, who once worked hotel operations and that these things were not acceptable. He brought out his manager, who offered to have someone immediately clean the room and have the engineer look at the A/C, or change our room for us. (they couldn't stand the thought of losing two days' revenue because of my early departure). We decided to change rooms, so as we were getting our stuff together to move ourselves to another room on the same floor, the engineer shows up and tells us that our next door neighbors were also complaining about their A/C the night before. Luckily the rooms were about 8 doors down the hall, and we packed and moved our own luggage, however, the beds in this room were very uncomfortably soft, I ended up with a backache. It is very hard for me to understand because this is Disney, and having worked for Disney (Florida), we always attempted to exceed guest expectations. The same is not true for California. Yes, the front desk manager offered to buy us dinner, which I declined. I explained to her that I worked hotel operations and came across so many guests who looked to complain in order to get something for free, this is not what I am looking for, that I just want to be comfortable and have the A/C work right. Both the front desk manager and the engineer both swore to high heaven that the guest controls the thermostat. Yes, the guest controls the numbers on the thermostat, but temperature is controlled by the hotel whether by motion detection, as I've experienced in Hawaii and Costa Mesa, or by hotel monitoring. Both methods were explained to me by hotel management in other hotels. I didn't appreciate the dishonesty of Disney's Grand Californian and that is the reason for my low ratings. And this is their flagship hotel of the Disneyland Resort. For the first time in my life, I couldn't wait to leave this hotel. Another cut back was the turndown service. Since there are no longer bedspreads on the beds --- just down comforters ( in May in Southern California which made no sense) and a decorative tapestry across the foot of the bed, the housekeeper would just fix the pillows, turn on a light, close the drapes and leave a menu for room service breakfast -- no more chocolates!
As for Disneyland itself, it was a disappointing trip. We were there for 3 days and although I do understand the normal maintenance refurbishment of rides is necessary, I don't understand breakdowns every single day of rides that were NOT scheduled to be down. In our case, Space Mountain was down for a time, each day that we were there. Maybe it is time to close the entire park, fix what needs fixing and open to be the grandeur that Disneyland was.
Since this was probably going to be our last visit to Disneyland because we plan on moving back to Florida, I really wanted this vacation to be special --- it was totally the opposite. If you want to choose a Disney property in California to stay at, I would choose one of the newly refurbished rooms at the Disneyland Hotel. I've always had good experiences at the Disneyland Hotel.

Mom calls to check on me and reminded me to pay the gardener. I love her so much.
Disneyland was fun with flag retreat and pickles. I have a home here, thank you. GAC is NOT a "front of the line pass".
She is gone but keeping signature. Laundry is getting done. My purpose in life is to help poor people in FL. Farewell, will miss you.

I'm sorry you had a bad stay. I think you might be over reacting a little. I stayed there back in September and had a wonderful time. Problems happen and it sounds like the hotel tried to fix them but you did not really give them a chance. I hate to be negative here I just have to say what think. Remember your on vacation. Relax

I honestly don't think that when you are paying a premium price to stay at Disney's flagship hotel in Disneyland, you should be required to accept being with NO AIR CONDITIONING, particularly when someone has respiratory issues.
I would like to know what you mean by saying that "I didn't give them a chance." I allowed them to change my room --- an inconvenience when you are only there for three days ----. Luckily the room was on the same floor and I had my wheelchair, so my DH was able to walk our luggage over to the new room and put other stuff on the wheelchair and move it that way.
Thank you to all who responded and understood my point.
I'm very sorry that your stay was not up to your satisfaction. A hotel can make or break your vacation and when it is a Disney hotel you have certain expectations. I think you should have taken the free dinner. You weren't complaining to just get something free. Your complaints were legit. If you couldn't check out early, you should have taken what they were willing to give you to help make up for the problems.
I do think that when you post you need to be ready to accept the good with the bad. Some people will agree with you, others will not. It comes with the territory of these boards.
Personally, I need the white noise to fall asleep. Having no air would have driven me nuts. We stayed at the Anabella where the key card had to be in a wall slot for any of the lights/air to work. Sort of a pain if you just had to run in and grab something, but on the plus side, you always knew where your room key was.

First off let me say I am so sorry that are so mad at me for voicing my opinion on the matter. I do not think you did not have NO AIR CONDITIONING. When I stayed there mine worked fine and it was not motion controlled. If it were me I would have been very happy to have a new room and maybe voiced what happened but they way I read your post came off as very mad and upset over the small stuff.

When someone has respiratory issues as I do, A/C is not a luxury but a requirement, so first of all, I don't consider that being "small stuff"
Since you weren't in the room with me, you cannot decided whether or not I had airconditioning in the room. When I wake up at 3am and feel hot in a room where we had the thermostat set on 67º and my husband wakes up in a sweat, you cannot explain that any other way.
And this was not my FIRST time at the GC, but our fifth, I know there was something not right with the A/C since we never had a problem before.

I feel a bit disappointed about the problems you experienced there -- we are going to GC in September and we were hoping to have a good experience for our grandchildren (their first trip to DL).
Hope that things go better when we are there.
