Newbie with a Disney Career Start Program Question! - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

Newbie with a Disney Career Start Program Question!
Hello Everyone Since I haven't really posted anything yet, I thought it would be polite to introduce myself first! My name is Caitie and I am from Massachusetts. I am a senior in high school this year, and I am really interested in the Disney Career Start Program. Ever since I went to WDW with my family for the first time when I was 13 (If any of you know her, my mom is actually jennym on here!), I knew that I wanted to go to Florida after high school. Every part of it feels like home to me.
Now, when your 13, you really don't think about, or care, what kind of work and $$$ goes into going to a college in a state very far away from home right after you graduate. Then when you turn 17, life kind of slaps you in the back of the head really hard and asks, "What were you thinking?!". I kind of gave up on my dream of going to Florida and even going to college right after high school, and I told everyone I would just save up for a year and go to a local college, which sounded miserable to me
This is where the Disney Career Start Program comes into my life. My mom and I had been looking at it for awhile, and one day I finally told myself that, why shouldn't I go for it? I mean, it's my dream come true right in front of me, all I have to do is try and apply for it.
So, here is my question:
Has anyone done the Disney Career Start Program or the College Program and did you enjoy it? Or is anyone else looking into this program?

Hi Caitie, I am from Canada, I am now 34, but when I was 20 I did the International Program through Disney. I went down and worked in the Canada Pavilion. It is not the same as what you are talking about, but it's close.
I can tell you that Disney is what you make it. It is not all fabulousness, there are rude people and people who have worked there too long. But, that being said my year working for Disney was the best year of my life! Still today I have MANY friends that I met there! Disney has oppurtunities like no other company in the world. If you go in with a positive attitude and make the most of it you will love it. It sounds to me like you have the same passion for Disney that I have.

Hullo, Caitie. My name's Sean, and I'm from Massachusetts as well - although it's been a looooong time since I was in highschool, heh!
And while I don't really have any advice to offer, I do want to offer some encouragement. If you work hard enough at something, thre's always the CHANCE that your effort will pay off, and it will all "click into place".
It sounds like giving the Career Start or College program a try might be a good idea for you. If nothing else, it'll be an experience you can take forward with you, in your life. Not to mention, one presumes that youngsters in the Career Start program are, you know, paid for their work. Save up a bunch of that, and it can help pay for your school choice in a year, or two, or five.
And who knows? Maybe it will all just fall into place - maybe Disney and You will fit together perfectly, and you can move from the "Career Start program" ... to just "career".
