Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm​. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Money...

This is completely a non-Disney question. I'm working with our local elementry school, and we are talking about establishing a foundation to benefit the school. One thing we'd have to do though is raise a lot of funds.

I was just curious what different types of fundraisers go on in your community. We are looking at trying to raise $100,000-$200,000 a year, so selling candy isn't going to work.

Just seeing if anyone knows of an idea that might work for us. We are a rural school, and are fairly close to a city of 30,000 and one of about 50,000.

How about a car wash? This time of year in our area all the cars turn green due to tree pollen.

Also bake sales or a big yard sale or maybe a combination of both!

Car washes are very popular around here too. The only problem is that we'd have to do a ton of them in order to make it work.

We have a local fundraiser called the Taste of the Rogue. This last year they made $84,000 in one night. They get donations from company, and they have local restaurants serve dinner. It sounds like a great idea, but I think we need to find something that isn't done here already.

One of our private schools holds an auction/yard sale type event. They raise quite a bit each year also.

I'm trying to find something that we could adapt to our area, but something that isn't already being done. I keep going back to these two events, but that won't help! UGH! I think I should have stayed home when this meeting happened!

My daughter's Key Club did a bowl-a-thon. They raised $1300 in one week of prep. and 2 hours of bowling! Also, wone of our schools does a citizen's arrest. You charge people for you to go "arrest" their friends, who then must raise a certain amount of funds to make "bail".

What about a "charity ball" type event. Here, many local charities host such events. They usually have catered hor doerves (sp?), wine/beverages, a silent auction, a dj or band, etc. It is a very "black tie" type event held on a Sunday evening. These are often held in our local mall (after hours) or at a banquet hall. It is meant to be for adults only.
Another suggestion would be for a carnival. The schools around here host these. They are usually on a Saturday afternoon. They have game booths created (& operated) by parent volunteers, face painting, bake sales, raffles, cake walks, clowns, etc. It is very family-oriented and really involves the community. These are usually held in the school's gymnasium.
Hope these ideas help. Good luck! Your community is lucky to have someone like you looking for ways to really help out.

P.S. I think the cookbook is a great idea, too, it could be sold at the carnival or even at the charity ball!

Raffling a car may be the answer for you. Of course, you'd have to get a local company to donate the car, but at $100 to $150 a ticket (or even more; after all, it's a CAR!) you could make a nice chunk of the cash you want to get.

For that much money, though, you may want to do several of these ideas, spaced out through the year. $100,000 to $200,000 is a LOT of money.

Thanks for the ideas! These are some great ideas.

I know it's a lot of money, unfortunately, our district faces budget cuts every month. We Oregionians voted in a measure years ago that changed the whole structure of school funding in the State. It wasn't the wisest thing, but it is what we have to deal with. We cannot pass an operating levy, but instead we get the money from the State. It's a mess!!

Our true goal is to raise enough over the next how every many years to have a million in a tax exempt "foundation". Then the funds could be used to help the school.

We will see if we are able to do it.

My friend's daughter's school is having a raffle for a VW Beetle (which was donated by a local dealership). The tickets are $10 each and there are 12000 tickets being sold equalling $120,000 to the school if all tickets are sold. The car is worth $29,000 (Canadian) so even if they had to pay for it, they would still profit by $91,000.

Also, see if printing company the school uses on a regular basis might be willing to do the printing of the tickets at cost or if you get them on a good day, for free. If a dealership donates the car, they could get "billing" on the tickets going out and in the annoucement when the winner is picked.

Oh, BTW wish me luck on winning the Beetle. How can you say no to a 4 year old trying to raise money for her school :0). I'm a sucker for a cute face!

Seems like you might be looking at more than one event to make the money you need. Here's a few more ideas. These are all ones that allow the kids to get involved in the fundraising too---

I work at a daycare center, where we've had a carnival every year for the past 4 years. It's so much fun for the kids, parents, and teachers! We usually raise about $1600 with a bake sale, prize raffle, craft sale and various booths.

Heidi - Good luck on winning the car! That sounds like a great one for your daughter's school.

I knew my board friends would have some good suggestions! We really want to try and be proactive and not always responding to the threat of budget cuts.

I think I'll check out the car raffle idea and the cookbook. Can you tell I like cookbooks and cars?

They at least are things that I can't remember some other group doing lately. That could be a big plus.

My idea is to try and get OSU or UofO to donate a pair of Civil War tickets. (This is the big state rivalry, and last year tickets were going for $1000 or so.) This year the Civil War has been moved to Championship Saturday in December. I know we could sell raffle tickets to it!

But as many have said, with the goal we set out for ourselves, we will be doing lots of fundraising activities!
