WWYD...dance recital/costume HUGE issue - UPDATED 5/31 in OP - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

WWYD...dance recital/costume HUGE issue - UPDATED 5/31 in OP
For some reason, the dance studio measured the girls 6 months ago for costumes. The don't build in much growing room. Both DDs grew quite a bit, but 12yo gained a bit of weight with her PCOS/broken foot in cast for 6 weeks. Her costume does NOT fit. At all. It's gosh-awful pink cargo pants, black tank, and this trashy net crop top. I was able to get a black tank that is perfect, but the pants/top are way too tight.
The recital is in 2 weeks. The studio owner called the company last week to see if they could make larger pants, but they can't. The best they can do is "try to scrape up enough fabric" for me to do it or to try to alter the ones they sent (and we still have no fabric either). I have a paper due on Monday and I leave Wednesday. I will not be back in town until it is time for the rehearsals/recital, so NO TIME to try to sew/alter cargo pants for DD, *IF* they can even get the fabric.
I paid right at $75 for said (bum-ugly) costume that will never even be worn again. DD's already tender self-esteem is even more shattered. She does NOT want to even dance in the recital and has been "sick" every dance day for the last month. I've told her she does NOT have to perform, but she insists that she is going to (it's an Asperger's stubborn pride thing). I don't know what to do. I feel that the studio messed up by measuring so far in advance (kids GROW) and they had the costumes come in SO late that there is very little reaction time. I sorta think it should be up to the studio to find a seamstress to deal with the sewing/alterations and it is NOT my problem.
UPDATE: doesn't even do it justice. I got a call this morning that the company no longer has any fabric, so I need to come by the studio to LOOK at the costume to see if I can get some kind of fabric. : I'll be TAKING the costume to match fabric. I go to pick it up and they bring me this teeny tiny child's large (couldn't even fit my 9yo) costume. I explain to the counter-chick that it's wrong, so she goes to the dance teacher (who is peeved with me) and they bring out an adult L. Wellll...the costume DD tried on was an *XL*. Oh, no, that costume belongs to another dancer (who also outgrew HER costume, but DDs fits her fine). WTHECK??? They gave me the costume that neither girl can wear to work on. OK, I get that it's better to have one parent inconvenienced than 2, but the other girl is one of the "in" girls (despite her size), so her mom doesn't have to deal with any of the mess the studio has created for me. I went shopping today (like I have TIME for this) and could only find 100% cotton in a VERY close color that I *MIGHT* be able to put in a panel on the sides of the pants. Maybe. DD is SO upset, but won't bow out of the recital (even though part of her wants to). She's very particular about her clothes and doesn't like anything remotely "homemade" so even if I do get it fixed, there's no telling if DD will actually wear it. I had not thought about the owner not wanting DD in the recital, it hadn't even occurred to me that someone could be THAT mean, but I guess I'm sheltered.
I have decided that they won't be doing pictures no matter what. 9yo's costume looks like a streetwalker. I'm just majorly peeved that the costumes were SO much money and they are garbage.

I CAN KIND OF FEEL YOUR PAIN. MY DD HAD DRESS REHEARSAL TODAY FOR RECITAL TOMORROW NIGHT, AND HER COSTUME FITS, BUT THE STRAPS POPPED OFF DURING HER LAST DANCE. TONIGHT I GET TO SEW IT BACK TOGETHER, AND BY NO MEANS AM I A SEAMSTRESS. I PAID $60.00 FOR HERS AND IT IS MADE VERY CHEAPLY. IS THERE A GIRL IN ANOTHER CLASS THAT MAY HAVE THE SAME COSTUME THAT YOU COULD SHARE WITH? HERE ALL THE GIRLS IN THE SAME AGE GROUPS DO THE SAME DANCES WITH THE SAME OUTFITS, BUT ARE IN DIFFERENT SHOWS ON DIFFERENT NIGHTS. IF THAT IS THE CASE WITH YOU GUYS, MAYBE SOMEONE COULD SHARE? I THINK THE STUDIO IS BEING UNREASONABLE TO NOT LET YOU LOOK FOR FABRIC!! GOOD LUCK!! I KNOW THE RECITAL IS SUCH A SPECIAL NIGHTSFOR LITTLE DANCERS!!
I've always thought that the costumes were a rip-off! I'd think that the studio would want to help you here, since it is THEIR teaching skills that are being displayed! Unless they're just hoping that she won't show up because of the poor fit? that it gets taken care of so that she can attend and be proud of how she looks.

I had a similar issue with my 8 year old DD and her recital costume. They measured her in November and SAID that they ordered a size up... well she got a size medium, which equates to a size 8 (and it's too small), she happens to be a 10. That would mean she would have been a size 6 in November... i don't think so!
I was told that i was responsible for alterations after paying nearly $100 for a pair of shiney hot pants and a tank top and i was livid! The costume company refused to send a size larger so we picked up a body suit that has support in the tummy and with the tights, she'll be ok. I wish i had better advice for you, i just wanted to tell you that you aren't alone... i feel your pain. It's so hard on the kids when they know that they're different because their costumes don't fit. No wonder young girls have body image issues!
The dance studio should be responsible for the price and for getting a new costume! Brooke is measured for her costumes in October for the June recitals too but they always count on the child growing and factor that into the measurements. (Brooke grew 4" this year) The costumes arrived a couple of weeks ago and they had fittings to see who needs alterations and such. I hope your studio makes it right - it's not fair to your DD!!!
If they measured her and didn't leave any growing room, first of all, they should be helping you fix this. Secondly, if they aren't willing to help you, they have no right to tell you no on any fabric you find.
Ugh! How frustrating for you! Did you try calling the costume company yourself?
Let me know how things work out...
Barbara
(by the way, I am a dance teacher, but I don't teach in studios anymore, I teach in a high school - but when I did, I always measured with growing room!)
PS when our studio that my girls go to have to help someone with alterations, they don't charge the student.
BTDT. I was able to fix the problem myself - but this was on top of a horrid instructor, and the 4 (yes, only FOUR) girls who were in the class not knowing ANY of their dance, due to the horrible instructor.
We're in the "Never do dance again" group. I've found that individual sports that appeal to each child are wonderful! Lauren can't wait to go to Karate and does so every time she can, and Kathryn did piano for a few years. She started playing volleyball last year, as a H.S. Freshman, and really enjoyed that.
No more dance for us, thank goodness.
I'd tell the studio it's their problem - your DD will be dancing no matter what! Get her an outfit that is the same colors as the others, and be done with it - tell her she is too special to wear the one they forced you to buy. If your other DD is in the same dance, get her the same outfit.
