Suggestions for family anniversaries in the World - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.

Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

View Poll Results: How do we celebrate in-laws anniversaries?
My SIL & BIL don't really celebrate their anniversary. They maybe go to dinner without the kids or something, but this year just before we leave for Disney will be their 10 year anniversary. My in-laws anniversary isn't until the end of the year, but since I am doing this whole trip to make them happy I would like it to also be our anniversary present to them each. Especially the 10 year seems to require something special.
Cake:
I've been exploring this option, but adding it to the end of a meal when we have the DDP free seems redundant when dessert is included. If they would only give us an appetizer or dessert option, I'd be happy with the DDP. At least for free
GF bakery seems to be the best for dessert options and I like the slipper dessert choice. We have a dinner our last night at the GF that I have flagged as a joint anniversary celebration for MIL/FIL and BIL/SIL. We'd have to come up with 2 seperate dessert options, and again in addition to the expense it is just redundant when you already have dessert included. Maybe I should change the reservation to only celebrating the 10 year? But then what do I do for FIL/MIL?
The only time a dessert makes sense to me would be if I cancel dinner reservations on the night we arrive. The family can all eat seperately or get CS, and then have a dessert out on the beach at the Poly for the fireworks together with a dessert as a surprise. Big danger here would be they too tired from drive to stay up until 10 for fireworks, and they don't show up to get the surprise.

photo session:
I am considering doing the GF photo session for family pictures since my MIL is excessively concerned that we get pictures together. No family picture taken for about 8 years.
If we do the photo session, will they take a couple pictures of each couple seperately in addition to the ones all together? I don't really know how flexible they are with the photo options. Can anyone think of a way to make my MIL understand that this photo session would be our gift to her. Or maybe even our gift to both couples, if everyone can have pictures taken by themselves also??
baskets:
I have looked at the websites for baskets, but while I love the idea, I don't feel like paying the dollars plus a $25 base/delivery charge when I am driving down and could probably put some nice baskets together. I am the contact person for all of our rooms and we'll be checking in first. Has anyone had experience with putting something into the rooms for and/or decorating rooms for travelling companions? I was considering autograph books for the kids, maybe a refillable mug, anniversary buttons if I can get ahold of them the night we arrive. What else would you think?
specialty cruise:
We won't have the money to pay for a fireworks cruise ourselves for the entire group, and if everyone decides to chip in together on one, that isn't really a present other than doing the arranging.
And it is probably pitiful that all I can think of today is I am spending hours trying to make sure they each have a great anniversary, and I promise there isn't a one of them concerned about ours! /end of whine!
Photosession will capture the memories of both couples anniversaries and will create a nice family memory for all. If you're dining at 1900 Park Fare, you can order them each a small dessert - like the mini-castle cake (around $25) for one and maybe the slipper desset (around $15) for the other one. I'm planning on getting the photosession done at GF and immediately following have dinner at 1900 and ordering the mini-castle for our anniversary and the slipper for our DD birthday. I agree with Eileen and Janice - that would be a great way to surprise them too. Make an insert for the frame with a little note letting them know about the photo shoot. I love the idea of the frame.
