As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). rent a car when you are taking a short trip? I am considering renting a car for the December trip. I am undecided if I just want to get the car on property or at the airport and take DME to and from POFQ.
i always rent ,as i will on my short trip dec 3-7 ,because- i stop after leaving airport at the outlet,then to eat at sweet tomatoes as i do every time- i use the car to go to gift shops, universal, boardwalk,walmart etc- i like the freedom! it depends on your need

It depends if you're planning to visit resorts or maybe want to get from Downtown Disney to a park or vice versa - then I would say that driving would be quicker.
We have always had a car. However, on our last trip, we flew instead of driving and decided not to rent a car. We didn't miss it at all; in fact, DH said that he loved not having to worry about driving for over a week!
I think renting a car is even more important on a short trip, since your time is much more limited, and renting a car saves you a lot of time over the course of a trip.
If you do rent, definitely get teh car at the airport. Much of your time savings will come from being able to skip DME and drive directly to your resort, not to mention the savings you will get from not having to catch busses to get to the Care Care Center or Dolphin to rent your car.
And by renting at the airport, you can skip DME for the return trip and have a little more time in the parks on your last day.
Of course, renting a car always comes with the added bennefit of allowing you to make a grocery run off-site to pick up snacks, drinks, or bottled water, or any small items you might have forgotten to pack.
We rent a car for every trip. We stay on property (always!) but the busses make me crazy. We tried them again on our most recent trip just to give them a chance and we went back to using the car the next day.
We usually rent a car as well, but I think it would be more beneficial on a short trip, since you can determine what time you want to leave for the airport, and it'll be faster travelling between resorts if you're doing some resort ADRs
We rent a car on every trip. We have also taken DME to the resort then picked up a rental at the Dophin. DH likes to have the car, even when we stay on property. We also like to have the car for our return trip to the airport.
We always rent a car too. I found that if you stick to the car rental companies in the airport it is so much easier. Last year for Mousefest we got an economy class car for $15/day. I think at that price you can't beat the convenience that comes with having your own vehicle. I just checked L&M car rental for Dec and found $17.76/day for an economy and $20.55 for a compact car. The web site for L&M is L&M Car Rental, Discount Rental Car, The Best Value in Car Rental I always found great prices with this company.
We rented a car for the first time in Jan. (after something like 15 visits). It was wonderful!
We were staying at Poly, and it gave us the freedom to go to EPCOT, MGM, AK, and DTD without waiting for buses or the time involved.
I think that it's cheaper to rent away from the airport. You'll have to check- but here in Indy, it's cheaper if:
1. the counter is out of the terminal
2. the rental place is off airport property
