Forums Closed

As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Washington, DC
We are thinking of driving to DC in March for a long weekend - before roller hockey season starts for my DH and DS. My kids are 9 and 6. I went to college there years ago, and pretty much know what we want to do in terms of the "classics", but would appreciate any info on any newer attractions that we should consider.
Also, any suggestions on where to stay? We are coming from NJ, if that makes any difference. We are not looking for anything fancy, but definitely want safe. My DH would be TERRIBLE if the neighborhood was not safe. We would consider staying outside the city and driving or taking the metro in, but it would be great to find something in the city. FYI - we often stay at Hampton Inns, and they are fine with us. I kind of remember a hotel near the zoo that seemed nice, but don't know what it was, or how pricey it is.
Thanks for your help!
Debbie

Re: Washington, DC
We went to visit the “new- opened in 2004” National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian. I wasn’t too excited at first (we went because it was a “must see” for my aunt). But now I am so glad I did! I was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. I definitely recommend it. Plus the cafeteria (Mitsitam Native Foods Café) served great food. Re: Washington, DC
I definitely recommend the new Museum of the American Indian, and the new wing of the Air & Space Museum out at Dulles. You can get shuttle bus tickets from the Air & Space Museum on the Mall to go to Dulles. Both were fabulous!
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Capitol which is a comfortable 5 minute walk from the National Mall and a Metro stop. We just loved the location. It felt very safe. There was a Starbucks in the hotel, and a Quiznos, McDonald's and a deli just around the corner (on the same block). We would highly recommend this hotel.
Be aware though, that the Museum of American History is currently closed for a massive two year renovation process.

Not everyone is comfortable doing it, but we've gone to DC three times using Priceline, and stayed at the Hyatt for $50 night.

Re: Washington, DC
The Korean war memorial is definitely something to see, especially at night. The effect of the lighting on the bronze statues is amazing.

Re: Washington, DC
We last went in 1999 . . . for 5 days, which was SO not enough time to see everything we wanted, but we hit the highlights. (Thank goodness we are just about 3.5 hours away from DC now, so we can go back and visit what we missed before and see the things we saw then again! )
We stayed at the Hilton Arlington, which wasn't then but is now (HOLY COW) pricey! But it was very nice! The hotel was attached to the Ballston Common Mall and had a few little shops in the lobby area. There was also a Metro station right outside the front door! We stayed here as well in December 2005 and we thought it was a great hotel. We were very happy with the location and felt safe here.
Our highlights from our last couple of visits have really been mentioned by others - the new Air and Space Museum at Dulles is really worth a visit. I was a bit sceptical about it, as it's not my sort of thing, but I found it really interesting.
We also love the Korean War Memorial - it's one of our favourites, particularly at night, as the lighting is so beautiful. Another new addition is the World War II Memorial - that's worth seeing.

Re: Washington, DC
One other spot worth checking out is the National Zoo. My Dsis lives in Arlington and she said the cub is finally old enough to be outside and is very active.

DH and I went in October- we stayed at the Embassy Suites Chevy Chase Pavilion. A very nice hotel (with free breakfast) that was attached to a mall. There was a Starbucks and Cheese ake Factory. The Metro Station was right beneath the hotel.

Re: Washington, DC
We stayed at the Holiday Inn on the Hill, which was two blocks from Capitol Hill and Union Station. The location was absolutely perfect. It was recommended to Passporter pparm!
At the time, it was the cheapest hotel within walking distance of the mall that also had queen-size beds (which were very important for us). If you stay there, be sure to request a room as far away from the fire station as possible.
Here is a link to my trip report if you want more info:

The Museum of the American Indian is indeed amazing. AND be sure to call your senator or representative's office ASAP when your dates are set to get tours of the Capitol and the White House.

Re: Washington, DC
Thanks for all of your suggestions. I am looking into all of them!
We will definitely hit the zoo - that's what got me started. I saw shows about the Pandas Sunday night! I haven't been to DC since having children 9 years ago. It's time to go back. It's an easy drive (especially compared to the 9 hours to Maine that we do several times a year), so we're doing it!
KEep the suggestions coming, please. Passporter friends are the best! I really appreciate all of your suggestions and help!

Re: Washington, DC
Re the American history museum closing - they do have a smallish exhibit set up at the Air & Space Museum w/ some of their items. There is something about it on their website. I was looking into it for my big vaction this year, but I decided to wait until the museum opens back up in 2008.

Re: Washington, DC
I can't remember the name of our hotel, but it was a Westin just off Dupont Circle and it was fab! I would definitely recommend that area and hotel.
I loved DC. I could have spent a week in the museums.

Re: Washington, DC
We usually stay at the Marriott Suites in Bethesda, as we have family there. I have consistently gotten excellent rates-well under $100./night on the weekends. It not far out of the city and I feel very safe there when I travel with just my DD.
My kids favorite place has always been the zoo-from DS1's first trip as a toddler through out most recent trips with young adult children. The kids have always enjoyed the Air and Space Museum and the Museum of Natural History. They also like the Holocaust Museum (although perhaps not for younger children).
I think DC is one of the best family vacations, especially since all the Smithsonian museums are free.
