As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Solo eateries
Hi all! I have a work meeting in Orlando Oct 11th and am taking the rest of the week off to do a solo tour of WDW.
Can you all give me some of your favorites spots to dine solo?
Thanks!

Re: Solo eateries
I am always solo...and that doesn't any difference. The only ones I probably would not do are those that are set up for romantic twosomes..Victoria and Albert, etc.
I often tell the host(ess)that I am happy to take another solo at my table. Sometimes I meet new disney nuts that way

Re: Solo eateries
My mother frequently goes to WDW on her own. She loves it. She likes to go to some of the places with open seating - not assigned. SHe'll ask someone if she can sit with them. OR, if she notices another single or even a family waiting at the same place, she'll invite them to join her (we've done this too, and we usually have between 6 and 12 people with us) it's a fun way to meet people and have a very memorable experience.
When she wants a quiet change of pace, she'll go to some of the restaurants in EPCOT.

Re: Solo eateries
As a solo diner at times I have done my most favorite place.. Sci-fi diner more than once. Have also been to Kona Cafe & Boma for Breakfast. Trails End buffet for breakfast, dinners. Concourse steak , the rose & crown for Lunch. Once did 1900 park fair for a character breakfast solo because the friend I was with did not want to go. Alice in Wonderland and the Mad hatter sat with me for a few minutes & so did Tigger. Mary Poppins actually remembered me from days earlier at MGM
For COunter service ... columbia harbor house,Caseys & pecos bills are favorites. At Epcot its Fish & Chips in England or Electric Umbrella, Yakitori's. MGM & AK I can't think of any fav. At DTD it is Ghiredelli's ( yep its been a meal.. hey I am on vacation) or Earl of Sandwich. Hope this helps you with your decisions.
Have Fun... Relax & enjoy the meal.

Re: Solo eateries
I eat solo at WDW a lot after dropping off my daughter for child care or an activity at the Grand Floridian. My favorites are the Grand Floridian Cafe and Kona Cafe. Solo travellers aren't that rare at WDW and I've found lots of the CMs to be quite accomodating. They have the luxury of having a nice conversation with you since you're the only one at the table. I've gotten to find out lots of neat information about CMs while dining alone.

Re: Solo eateries
I agree with what's been said. Solo dining is just fine just about anywhere (I too would not go to Victoria and Albert's). I had wonderful meals at Flying Fish Cafe and Artist Point on my last trip.

Re: Solo eateries
I'm single and eat by myself in restaurants regularly & there is no reason to be uncomfortable. If you think you're going to be uncomfortable just bring your PassPorter with you to read while you wait for & eat your meal. Your waiter/ess is also a great source of information. Be friendly & don't be afraid to ask questions unless

Re: Solo eateries
I am single and often eat alone, too. It doesn't bother me at all (I actually think you get better service) and I enjoy watching other people, so its fun for me. I'd eat anywhere alone. <-minus one

Re: Solo eateries
I want to share my observations to solo eating. Most places are great. Others seem to begrudge the space you are not using.
I like going solo. This time, I have friends to eat with on about four of my meals but I easily prefer sitting reading and enjoying the food. I would hate to have a stranger plop in on me while I am eating.
Here are my observations from my January 06 visit with reservations:
Cinderella's Royal Table - Dinner - Here I had Royal Treatment though I was served an hour later than scheduled. I escorted Cindy herself in on my arm from the elevator. Food and service were excellent.
Rose and Crown - They set up a special one person table on the deck to maximize seating outside. Bit in the way of passing staff but not a big problem. Cast members were really nice and friendly. Food was magificent.
Sci Fi Drive In - Bit awkward on first time. They cheerfully called me a hitchhiker tacked on the end of another family car. CMs kept mistaking me as part of this car's party. Slightly uncomfortable.
Boma's - The hostess kept saying "Just one?" three or more times as if I was hiding a couple people in my cargo pocket.
Staff member was clearly annoyed at serving one person and kept saying "only one?" and all but told me I should not be here. Felt like a three headed goat. Place was crazy and food was mediocre compared to others. Did not stay long. Will not return to Boma.
O'hana - Night and Day from Boma. Awesome place. Was made to feel really welcome and CMs were friendly and had nice chats about the parts of the world they were from. Food was terrific. Really great place. Only place I am going to a second time.
Mickey's Grill - Really nice place. Minnie gave me a kiss on the cheek by surprise . Wait was a bit longer but worth it. Solid food was plain but tasty.
Chef's De France - Crowded place and lines were long. Service from CMs were fine. I speak some French and was able to have short conversations with very busy staff.
I am going back this December so I am hoping to have better news.

Re: Solo eateries
Two places I highly recommend for solo dining as they will seat you at communal tables so you get a chance to socialize with fellow guests are Biergarten and Teppanyaki. At a lot of the other restaurants you can sit at the counter if they have one, like at Beaches and Cream or California Grill and then you get to chat with the servers and/or chefs.

Re: Solo eateries
I often travel solo and it doesn't bother me to eat alone in restaurants. I often do it at home too. I'll eat just about anywhere (and those of you who know my picky eating habits can stop snickering). Some of my favorites for eating solo:
Beaches and Cream - I love to sit at the counter and chat with the servers and watch them make the sundaes.
The Plaza Restaurant - I usually get seated in the glassed in gazebo and watch the people go by.
Concourse Steakhouse - They have always taken really good care of me and don't make me feel like I'm taking up their time.
Trail's End - When going at a slower time the servers will often sit and chat and always are very attentive to my needs.
Any of the Character meals - The characters have always seemed to go the extra step to make you feel more than welcome.
