As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

\'Poseidon\' is cramping my style!
I really, really want to go on a Disney cruise. My DD was a little hesitant after seeing 'Titanic' a couple of years ago. She was just getting over it, and had agreed to the cruise. We saw 'Poseidon' this weekend, and now she is like [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/082502no_prv.gif[/img]! Darn it, I almost had her convinced! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gif[/img]

I remember the original "Poseidon Adventure" scared me, but as a teenager, I didn't really know if I'd ever go on a cruise. Well, in just 19 days we leave for our very first cruise.

We saw Poseidon (it was our 3rd choice but the others were sold out, we did not even know what it was about) this past Saturday night, our anniversary and our first movie in about 4 years. We were very excited to go. Anyway, I digress. I thought the movie was really good but I leaned over during the movie and told dh that I didn't think I would be able to ever cruise again! Might a comparison of the safety records of cruising compared to flying, drinving, resorts, etc. help? Cruises are some of the safest vacations one can take. "Poseidon" after all, is a fiction. Does the fear of bad things happening in malls, cars, homes, sidewalks, yards, etc. keep her from going to any of those places? yet movies portray bad things happening in all of those settings. I wish I could say the rogue wave in Poseidon was completely fiction, but I can say that the effects of such a large wave (up to 100 feet tall) are probably a bit overblown in the movie. An article at Wikipedia lists several "freak wave" encounters with both large cruise ships and some far smaller cruise ships, and in no case did they capsize. That's not to say that it couldn't happen, but the chances seem incredibly slim. Based on what's known about rogue waves, they seem to occur as part of an existing wave train, generally in a storm. Since the (fictional) Poseidon had to be broadsided by the wave in order to capsize, the odds get very slim indeed in real life. Ships generally head the bow directly at storm waves, rather than run parallel to them, specifically to reduce or eliminate the chance of capsizing. That's probably why all the cruise ships listed in the article survived with relatively little damage. There are other hazards that are far more likely (fire, collision with other vessels), and even those happen very rarely.
It's similar to the incidence of shark attacks. You're tens of thousands of times more likely to be hurt while driving to the beach than the chance that you'll ever be witness to, no less a victim of, a shark attack. The heck with "Poseidon" or "Jaws." If they really want to scare folks, Hollywood should make "I-95!" Oh, actually, they did, Smashup on Interstate 5 |

DH and DD want to see "Poseidon," but I have no interest. I had enough trouble with "Titanic" - particularly the scene where the mother is soothing the children to sleep as the water is rising and they are locked below decks. Ugh! I've seen enough of the trailers to see there is a small boy figured prominently in the movie and I really don't want to see what happens.
For those that have seen the movie, did the "Poseidon" have great big stabilizers? The Magic and Wonder have stabilizers, right? Shouldn't that help. At least we wouldn't have to worry about a Titanic type event since we KNOW there are enough lifeboats (and life jackets) for everyone. That and the Disney ships stay in warmer water, no iceburgs there. Of course, that could change if the powers that be decide to try Alaska.
Wishing I was on the cruise right now...

We've been rolled to 60 degrees in a 35 foot sailboat by a 30-40 foot wave that hit us on beam. Lesson learned, next time in a big blow we take down all the sails instead of furling them.
A cruise ship has so much ballast that it would be hard to roll one more than about 15 degrees. And, as Dave points out, even rogue waves are no real surprise. They don't spring fully formed on their own. And a cruise ship is big enough and fast enough to avoid almost all bad weather. Finally, a big wave will show up on radar from quite a ways out.
Posiden/Posiden Adventure is great fiction, but nothing more.
