Diners, Drive Ins and Yummy Places to Eat - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

If you're in Fredericksburg you should stop at Carl's on Princess Anne St. for real old fashioned soft serve ice cream If you around for breakfast go to Paul's Bakery on Lafayette Blvd. for some super yummy donuts - there cakes and cookies aren't bad either!
For real food I guess I'd recommend Sammy T's. It's not my favorite but it is an institution here.

Ok so when we are in Chicago we always have to hit Portillo's. The best Italian Beefs and hotdogs and then of course there is always Lou Manati's pizza. I would weight a million pounds if I lived in Chicago. They have some great food!
The Red Arrow Diner in Manchester was actually featured on the Food Network Show Diners, Dives and Drive-Ins (or whatever it's called)... Other than that there's plenty of good restaurants, but not too many must sees.

We have lost a lot of our local hangouts to fast food and chain rest. but not too far from here in Carpinteria is The Spot. The name says it all...right by the beach. Best burgers in town!

Yes!!!! I have to agree! Portillo's has very good food!
Here in Tinley Park, we have a Portillo's just down the street from me. I their hotdogs and Italian beef!! Of course we are there quite a bit! There's also Gino's East pizza to hit if you like deep dish pizza.
The main "tourist attraction" places to eat in our town are Mama Dips and Crooks Corner. The Rathskeller closed recently and was a place Alumni liked to eat (but I would never recommend).
I do not recommend Mama Dips as their service is bad and they used canned vegetables. But, people like the Fried Chicken and the place does good business.
Crook's Corner on the other hand is a good restaurant and is a nice place for people to eat. The Shrimp and Grits is famous and very good.
It will be interesting to see if others who live nearby have an opinion on these.
OMG! I had no idea the Rat had closed. I knew it hadn't been quite the same the last few years since they had new owners, but I didn't know it had closed. We almost took off for it the other night - I d their lasanga. I used to take the cheese from the bowl and wrap it around the bread - aaaahhhh.
I like Mama Dips fine - I took a Food in America class and our last class was at Mama's; the prof was friends with her. The chicken is great - however, having grown up on that kind of food, I think it's really overpriced.
Crooks Corner is great - very friendly and great food. Haven't had the shrimp and grits - I'll have to try it next time I'm over there.

I always meant to get up to Mama Dips when we lived in Charlotte - and never had the chance. In fact, somewhere I have a list of some really great BBQ places native Carolinians recommended to me...
I also never had a chance to go to Price's Chicken Coop in Charlotte - but I heard they had fried chicken to die for! (Scarlett - have you been?)
No, I haven't! I have heard it's sooo good, though. I'll be in Charlotte in two weeks - gonna make a point to make it there. Thanks for the suggestion!
My favorite BBQ place is in Lexington, of course. I like both East and West style, though, which is like saying, "I like both heaven and hell" to some people around here.

Well, the Anchor Bar- if you like wings since this is where they started and Teds Hot Dogs- if you like hot dogs char grilled. Andersons for ice cream and roast beef on Weck.. lots of neighborhood places but these are kind of home town favorites
We have Longo's, an Italian place right around the corner. They have the best pizza and calzons. In my home town there's Petey's a family diner that has just about anything you'd like to eat. It's my mom's favorite place to eat.
Liz
I think probably the cafe we took Sue and Steve to for breakfast when they were here and the curry house we got our takeaway from - those are both places for good traditional British food. Also, we've got a lovely pub just up the road from us.
If you're in Seattle you have to eat at a Seattle burger chain called Dick's. It's pretty much a Seattle icon and an institution. However they make their burgers Dick's way not yours. Here's D i c k's - Wikipedia entry Oh and they're enough of an institution/icon here that you wont find other fast food places near them even national chains such as McDonalds or Burger King.
In Lisbon, Ohio you can not beat the Steel Trolley Diner...their Steak Salads are da bomb! In East Liverpool (just down the road, and home of my rival high school) is The Hot Dogg Shoppee! Chili-cheese hot dogs and fries with a chocolate malted...all for under $7.00.
In DH's hometown, Madisonville, KY, is Ferrells. It is another hamburger joint that is tiny(think how Disney_Scarlett describe Johnson's) and people wait for it. I have to admit, even though the place looks dubious on the outside, the burgers are fabulous.
Don't get me wrong I like Super Dawg but I would much rather go to Gene and Jude's. The fresh fries served right on the hot dog and don't even think about asking for ketchup.
They are in River Grove - not to far from O'Hare airport. It's some cheap eats around $2 for a dog and fries but it's cash only. You can eat at the counter or out of the back of your car. There used to be a Cock Robin Ice Cream shop next door - they where a perfect pair. They are open to 1 or 2 am and there is almost always a line but well worth the wait.
