Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Stuff for Special Ed Class?

My son and I are going to Disney World for two weeks in August. He teaches a primary/junior special education class. He was thinking that perhaps he could find some materials and information during our trip that he could then use for his class during the next school year. Are there any teachers out there who have come across stuff of this nature while at WDW? Or perhaps anyone who has seen something that could be usable? I know that Wilderness Lodge has children's coloring/activity books so he's going to see if they will let him have some of these for his class. BTW, it's a small class (7 students). We were just wondering if there might be more stuff like this down there that he could pick up for his "kids."

Re: Stuff for Special Ed Class?

I was a special ed teacher for 10 years before DS was born and have made several trips to WDW in the last few years. What is the developmental age of the kids? I'm not famiiar with the term primary/junior special ed.

Re: Stuff for Special Ed Class?

This class is called a "communications" class. It is made up of children aged 6 to 8 with grade levels from one to three. These kids have learning disabilities that hamper their ability to learn to read.

Re: Stuff for Special Ed Class?

Are you looking for free or cheap things or will he purchase the items? Are you looking for items to give each of them or like for a reward box (it would be cheaper if you only needed one vs. 7 items)? Let me know and I'll do some more brainstorming.

Also, just to let you know, I have a son who is 6 and for the most part, he won't have anything to do with the character things like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck. He'd be afraid they were too childish. (When he got into first grade, he seems to be really into worrying what peers would think.) He'd be more into movie relate items like Atlantis and the more "boy" things like the villians. This would narrow your field quite a bit. I think perhaps girls would be easier to buy for, although I don't have any daughters! I just bring this up because it would be too bad if your son went to a lot of expense and then not have the kids appreciate it.

Some ideas off the top of my head are Disney themed pens, pencils, erasers, refrigerator magnets, stickers, the soaps you get free if you stay in moderate or deluxe hotels, mickey mouse shape straws, there are little squares that turn into washcloths when you put them in water, key chain things, the store in Japan carries these little good luck cats which are only about 1/2" but only cost about .30 cents (each different color brings you a different type of luck) - both of my kids thought these were really cool, you could get the pressed pennies from the different pavillions in Epcot (cost: .51 cents each) or from the different parks, MK has a store that carries firefighter themed merchandise, in MK there is a store outside of pirates of the caribbean ride that has pirate themed things, in AK you could find a lot of animal themed merchandise. Also, if you have a color printer, a free thing would be to make each child some Disney themed stationary that is personalized with their name on it. There is a lot of Disney clip art available. They wouldn't have to know he didn't get it there!

Re: Stuff for Special Ed Class?

EPCOT used to have a place for teachers to get info above the shop that is now the Disney Gallery (next to Spaceship Earth). I haven't seen anything about it for a while, but you might ask at Guest Services cause I bet they could get you some stuff.

Re: Stuff for Special Ed Class?

I thought each country in World Showcase at EPCOT had a special 'passport' section for children where they could do crafts that reflect the country represented. If he was to pop into each station he might be able to get some ideas and info from the CM's!

Re: Stuff for Special Ed Class?

First, your son will be able to write off part of his trip on his taxes. My husband and I are both teachers and I always take pictures, buy CDs, or other materials to use in my classroom. I also design a worksheet packet for students to do as make-up work when they go to Disney without me (Yes, it's punishment because I'm jealous!)

Now, back to your question - Epcot and AK both have "Passports" to have stamped in each country. Kids of all ages love to have their "Passports" stamped. He may also want to hang out at some of the "Kid Stops" in both parks and watch the activities they offer for the young children. Some of the activites at these stops are actual activities a child would do in the CMs native land. This would be a great way to teach the children about a country without a lot of reading or writing.

Downtown Disney has a 2R's Reading and Riting store which has activity books.

He could purchase small toys in Epcot to show what children play with in other parts of the world.

As your son walks around the parks he will come up with tons of ideas to use in his clasroom.

Re: Stuff for Special Ed Class?

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful ideas! My son is now all geared up to see what sort of goodies he can unearth for his students while we're down there, using all of your terrific suggestions.
