Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

How Scary is Alien Encounter?

Do any of you have oppinions on Alien Encounter at MK? The last time I went to MK the line was too long so I didn't go on it. Is it REALLY Scary?

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

I like Sci-Fi and enjoy this attraction.

However, I do not think small or young children should attend this one! (they could end up with bad nightmares). Also would not recommend it to anyone who is afraid of the dark or hates sci-fi.

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

I'm a big 30 year old chicken (I hate suspense. I watched the movie Aliens with my eyes closed.) but I enjoyed AE. It was scary the first time, but very fun (I screamed quite a bit) and the effects are amazing.

If you don't like being startled in the dark, I would suggest you don't go on it. Closing your eyes doesn't help much either, but it made me feel a bit better.

On a scary meter of 1-10 and the Haunted Mansion being a 2 I'd give AE a 7.

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

I came off this attraction in tears, saying, "Let's do it again!" It was very scary, with a lot of very realistic effects, but it was fabulous! My daughter(13), who has loved Freddy Kruger, and all his cronies, since she was 3, wants to go on this attraction again and again.
I would not recommend it if you are the slightest bit squeamish, but if you enjoy a good scare, it's a must do!

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

I've been to the MK 4 times since AE opened and I've still yet to see it. My children are young and we've seen kids coming out of the attraction bawling (some adults look pretty shell-shocked too) which has been enough to keep me from taking them in there.
I love sci-fi and maybe when they are older, I will get a chance to see it. If you and the people you are going with are comfortable with hair-raising kinds of things then go for it. For me though, I want everyone to have a good time and the MK just isn't about scaring ... especially not for the little ones. My son was 6 before he wanted to attempt the Haunted Mansion. He enjoyed it but he still wasn't up for AE when we were last there and he was 8 1/2. If you force your child into experiencing something they are afraid of THEY CAN and WILL make you miserable before/during/and especially afterwards. Apologizing after the fact will not calm them down and they will be edgy about other attractions in the dark the rest of the day; it just isn't worth it. If you have a little one in your party that won't enjoy the experience and you still want to do it, do the baby-swap with another adult in your party.

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

I am the world's worst scaredy-cat because what I imagine is going to happen is almost always worse tahn reality. I did NOT want to go on this, but my brother convinced me to try it. It is really scary, but, as you can see, I survived and I really liked it after the fact. I found myself laughing and now I'm really looking forward to going again!

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

Each time I go on this ride, it's a little less scary. Now it's more like "startling." (Some parts, of course, are more startling than others! ) Overall, I'd agree with minemoz1's scary meter ratings for a first-timer.

Has anybody else experienced the Alien Encounter when the place is packed with screamers? And I'm not talking sincere oooh-that-really-scared-me screamers ... I'm talking about the people who apparently think it's fun to scream from the moment they sit down until the show is over. I can imagine that would increase the scary factor for some; for me it was just annoying.

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

From all the build up I saw on the boards, I thought it would be much scarier than it actually was for me. I don't think I scare really easy though, at least not on Disney attractions. I know they are just rides. It was fun, but nothing I needed to go on a second time. Yes, there were a lot of people screaming for the fun of it...so maybe that did detract from the show a little. I really enjoyed the pre-show, though! Skippy is a favorite character of mine, now.

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

For an adult, the range could be scared out of your wits to completely unimpressed. I would not take kids younger than 10 on it, it seems to freak kids out very badly.

Personally, I think it is the worst attraction at WDW. The pre-show is mean and disturbing, and the main attraction itself I find to be rather boring.

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

The only thing else I could add is AE places a harness over the top of you and if you or others are uncomfortable with tight spaces or restricted movement - this will not be fun!

Re: How Scary is Alien Encounter?

I agree with KAG....
Unless you have a kid who's not afraid of anything, age 10 is about the right age!
The first time I went on this ride I had my then 9 yr old son. We both love Sci-Fi and wanted to go on this ride! This was a very scary ride for him and he cluntched my arm during the whole show!! I loved it, it didn't scare me but very few things do. The imagination and effects were "scary-fun".
When we got out my oldest enjoyed telling my youngest how scary it was and it was a good thing he didn't go on! However, he wanted to go back again!
This year my youngest will be 10 and is looking forward to going on this ride! I think I'd better get some padding for my arm before we go!
Also be aware of what BA said...they do put a harness over you so if your child does get scared there is not much you can do until the ride is over! You can't get to them to hold or shield them! The most you can do is hold their hand!
So if you have doubts...DON'T go! If you enjoy being scared then give it a try!
