Declining housekeeping - have you done it? - Page 3 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

If the $10 credit per day is all that's offered, I wouldn't want it. Really, $60 for a week is nothing at WDW. I'd rather have cleaning every day. As Dot says, I'm on vay-cay-shun!

Yup, my first reaction was it's practically an insult to offer a mere $10/day. Holy Guacamole! You can just barely buy dinner for two, no appetizers or desserts, at 50's Prime Time for 60 bucks. That's not only pretty basic homestyle eats but isn't much of a reward for cleaning up after yourselves daily at WDW's room rates, I'd say.
A very important part of that vay--cay-SHUN attitude is the "shunning" any cleanup and tidying you don't absolutely have to do yourself.

MY DD has always hated housekeeping coming into the room and messing with our stuff. We have also often found ourselves waiting in the lobby for housekeeping to finish when we would rather be back in the room, resting up a bit.
The result is we often use the do not disturb tag.
I would gladly choose no housekeeping-we do shorter trips and often don't use it. To me it's not about the money but privacy-no one in the roon, door not left open for an hour or more.
We've have stayed at DVC resorts, paid the daily rate and could have had daily housekeeping.

I totally agree. I didn't have any interest in this offer when it was $20 a night. $10 a night is not even on my radar. I, too, am on vay-cay-shun! I want someone else to make my bed every day. I want someone else to take my dirty towels and replace them with fresh fluffy ones. I want someone else to empty my trash cans. I do those things at home every day, I'm not doing them on vacation. When we're at Disney, I lock my valuables in the safe and if a mousekeeper wants to dig through my clothing, have at it -- I get my Disney vacation clothing mostly from LL Bean, Lands End, etc. so they're not some high-end fashion pieces that anyone is really going to want anyway.
But I do see how the $10 credit is a benefit for those who decline Mousekeeping no matter what.
I still might do it. Like I mentioned before DH and I are pretty neat to begin with. I can pick up my wet towels and set the trash out no problem. That's about all I would be doing anyway. It's not like I'm going to be scrubbing the toilet and shower. We'd be saving $15 a day cause I leave a $5 tip everyday so if that buys us a nice dinner out, I'm happy with that. I gave up my full time job 6 years ago to babysit our grandchildren so we lost a third of our income. I have to carefully budget at least a year out to just stay at a value for a week, so I'll take any savings I can get.
They are crediting you for the approximate cost of servicing the room; nothing to do with what you are paying per night. I was happy to skip housekeeping at the Swan for a $5.00 credit that we used toward breakfast from the lobby coffee bar. We don't really need housekeeping daily as I am perfectly capable of smoothing the bed covers out and we certainly don't use up all the soap in one day. Also, my husband sometimes just wants to rest in the room without having to vacate so they can make the bed he is going to unmake when they leave.
Things have definitely changed in 3 years... I got back very late on Monday from POFQ. The ressie was not mine, as I was only staying 3 days, ressie owner stayed 7. Upon check-in, she was offered a gift card for declining housekeeping. We did it hands down, no brainer. Two adults in a room, we didn't need much. They still offer trash service at 3 days and full cleaning at 5 days, even if you decline housekeeping and take the gift card. Personally, I think it's great. There was a piece of paper on the table in our room talking about limited housekeeping services in the wake of Irma, so I'm actually glad we did.

I am the "ressie owner" per Wanda! And I was offered the deal at the time of checking in. If We needed more towels we could always call housekeeping. Like Wanda said it was a no brainer! I took that $60 gift card and put it towards our Sunday Brunch- it was well worth it!
I thought it a Magical gift! Lol

....I'm at POP right now. They offered us a $40 gift card (per room ...we have 4 rooms) if we declined housekeeping FOR THE WHOLE 9 day trip. It wasn't even close to being worth it. I'm on vacation ....I'm not cleaning.
......so .....I shall inform you that we went 3 DAYS without housekeeping showing up. Complaint upon complaint sent to concierge .....then they cleaned my room ...and forgot others. When they did show up at one of the rooms ...only towels delivered ...no cleaning ...no vacuuming.
....more on this will be spelled out in my trip report ( because I'm on line for the Frozen thing in Epcot) .....
.....however ....and I'm sorry to all the Disney supporters ....but they are failing miserably.

I hope I get better service. I don’t want to make beds and clean on vacation! If I don’t get housekeeping I’ll be going down to front desk and asking for that $ room credit for no housekeeping on the days they don’t show up.
