Spirit of Aloha - viewing Wishes and transportation to Poly from other resorts - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Spirit of Aloha - viewing Wishes and transportation to Poly from other resorts
We are going to the Spirit of Aloha Luau on 9/22 for the 5:15 dinner show. Can't wait! I see that Wishes is happening at 8pm at MK that night. Is there an area at the Polynesian that you might be able to see some of the Wishes show? We aren't park-hopping and MK is not the park we are going to that day but I was thinking since we are "in the area" if we could spy the show from the Polynesian that would be awesome!
Also, we are staying at POR Riverside so for a 5:15 Luau reservation what would be our best bet in getting from Riverside to the Polynesian? Take a bus to Disney Springs then a resort bus or bus to Epcot then a resort bus? We are not renting a car.
Buses will probably be faster than my suggestion, but we prefer the monorail for getting from Epcot to the monorail resorts. A bus just can't match the scenery from the monorail, IMO, not to mention the quality of the ride.
I'd do bus to Epcot and hop the Epcot monorail to the TTC. Once you get there, you could get on the resort loop monorail with the Poly being the first stop, very short, pleasant ride. Or, you might walk from the TTC to the Poly if in the mood for more of an adventure and a short walk.
We don't care for the Poly so can't advise what might be good viewing areas there.

I would just hop a bus from POR to Magic Kingdom and then take the monorail to the Polynesian.
A suggestion: The MK-GF-Poly boat might be faster than the monorail.
The monorail from the MK will stop at the CR and TTC before getting to the Poly and could require a lengthy wait at that time of day with lots of families going back to their resorts for dinner.

Wishes and the Electrical Water Pageant can be seen from any spot along the Poly beach but now with the addition of the bungalows the better views are on the far right of the bungalows or from along the beach in front of the Luau. The only direct front view was from Sunset Pointe but despite the small rise the view is somewhat obstructed by the bungalows. You can also view the show from the Terrace and from the TTC dock (you can walk the path from the Poly to here). Another option would be from the GF specifically the deck surrounding Narcoossee's or the beach near Gasparilla Grill.
My favorite place to watch Wishes is from the Poly beach! They pipe in the music so you'll be able to hear it with the fireworks. It can get busy and beach chairs are at a premium, so I would get there a bit earlier than you think. There is a lot of room on the beach to share, but my friend and I ended up sitting on the sand (ok for us, but not everyone's cup of tea).
I would also just take a bus to MK and then either take the monorail or boat across the water to the Poly (make sure you get on the Resort version of each, not the TTC one). Easy peasy! Have fun!

PassPorter's Free-Book to Walt Disney World It’s hard to believe anything is free at Walt Disney World; but there are actually a number of things you can get or do for little to no cost. This e-book documents over 200 free or cheap tips to do before you go and after you arrive. You could save a considerable amount of money following these tips. Perhaps more importantly; you can discover overlooked attractions and little-known details most people whiz by on their way to spend money. Click here to see free sample pages from the e-book! Get this popular e-book free of extra charges when you join the PassPorter's Club for as little as $4.95. A club pass includes access to all our other e-books; e-worksheets; super-size photos; and more! This e-book is also available for separate purchase in the PassPorter Online Store for just $5.95.
Something to be aware of is that the resorts may station CM's at popular Wishes viewing sites such as the Poly's beach and check Magic Bands. If you're not staying at that resort, you won't be allowed into the viewing area.
Might not be a problem when you'll be at WDW during a not terribly busy time of year, but if there were a private event such as a wedding or anniversary party, you might find access to such in-demand viewing areas restricted.

Thanks everyone for all the information! And good to know about possible magic band checks too! Can't wait!
I doubt that there will be any band checks except if it is a holiday or very busy (July 4th, Christms, etc). It has been years since my last visit and things change all the time but as long as you are only there to view the Electrical Water Pageant & Wishes I do not think you will be disturbed. Hope your group likes the Luau.
As I indicated, probably planning to watch from Poly beach won't end in disappointment since the OP's trip isn't near a major holiday.
Just wanted them to be aware that's possible since despite the Poly's not being a major convention center, it might be booked by a company for a mini-convention which could cause MB checks.

i've watched wishes from the end of the dock at the GF. it'd be a quick monorail ride there from the poly--or you can walk (there's a running path you can follow.) i've never been checked for a band. in fact, i've only ever been totally alone watching wishes from the GF (though i was staying there, so even if they had checked it would have been fine--but they definitely didn't.)
the only good option from POR to poly is a taxi. you'll save at least an hour of your day. you can also use uber in WDW, which is the most cost effective option. you'll pay maybe $8.
