I got a new Point and Shoot camera, need help with fireworks settings - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. I got a new Point and Shoot camera, need help with fireworks settings
I am a P&S camera person. I like to turn it on, turn it to the setting I want (auto, aquarium, fast moving, etc) and then take the pictures and let the camera do all the rest. My old camera, even though it had a fireworks setting, either never worked right or the operator didn't work right . The new camera I got is a Fujifilm finepix s8600. So far, I'm happy with it (I've only had it about 3 hours ) but like the other one, it has a fireworks setting. Unlike the other one though, when I put it to that, it asks me to set the exposure time. I really don't have much clue about this. Lenny (who has never owned a camera but seems to know some of this stuff) says the higher the number, the longer it will take to take a photo and end up with more fireworks in the picture. Okay, it makes sense but what I don't get are the settings - there's 12 settings.
That's the exactly how and in the order they appear on the camera. What are they and what exactly do they mean (especially the ones with a double apostrophe or inch symbol or whatever you want to call it)? Is there a setting I can just leave it on and get really decent photos? I care more about being able to get the colors of them versus shapes and fancy looking shots - so basically I take photos for memories and nothing more (but I still want good ones - that's not asking too much is it ?)

Congratulations on your new camera, it is a good one and I know many people that are extremely happy with this brand and this model...

Fireworks settings on point and shoot cameras are tough to use, most set the exposure time for something between 2 seconds and 10 seconds while keeping the aperture wide open and the ISO low... The fireworks setting on cameras is not meant to be used without a tripod or other measure of the camera being totally and solidly supported for a long (photographically speaking) time frame, which means the average person cannot hold the camera while using the fireworks setting without everything coming out blurry.

Sometimes I wish the camera manufacturers would keep it simple, but I reckon that's not gonna happen... the 3 numbers in the beginning are less than one second, and are 1/2, 1/1.6, and 1/1.3. I really wish I could explain why they do that... And the numbers with the " after them are seconds. 1 second, 1.3 seconds, 1.5 seconds, etc...

The short answer to this is no. Any of the settings in the fireworks mode requires that the camera be on a tripod or other solidly supporting structure.
Can fireworks photos be taken with this camera handheld, yes! It will require you to get the manual out and learn to use either shutter priority or manual mode, and you will have to be able to adjust the ISO setting. It will also require you to learn to use your body as a kind of tripod, meaning taking the proper stance and use your body to support the camera and your arms...
I can, and will, do a more in depth explanation of this later, and will write a short tutorial on this part of photography as I have done in the past to post in this forum...
Wow - thank you Bill. I was hoping you would come along and answer my post because you explain things in a way I can understand. I love the short answers you gave - I've learned something already but I do look forward to your tutorial. I always make links to them so I can reference them over and over as needed.
