(Not sure I got the title accurate).

I took my sister and her two kids DNephew12 and DNiece15 to see this movie at a sneak preview last night. It was so much better than I had imagined. I laughed a lot.

My niece asked why my sister and I laughed so much...which was interesting. She just didn't get some of it (maybe because she's had no life experience with some situations). Some of it was uncomfortable laughter because so many of the situations the family members were in WERE uncomfortable. My nephew, being the same age at the main character, was cringing in his seat a lot because of all the bad things that happened to boy in school.

This may not seem like a glowing review...but if you want something to make you laugh, this movie is it. It's a family oriented happy ending Disney movie. We all agreed that it was well worth our time going to see it (in another city about 25 minutes away).

Cam, I think it could wait. But, if you need a night out, this could do the trick.

I will definitely wait. And I'm a bit disappointed. I really love this book. And some of the stuff that happens to this kid is just every day kind of bad stuff (like knocking over a drink) but it just sort of adds up. And the Dad is only involved to ask the mom to take the kids out of his office (when they go to visit). So this sort of sounds like they just took the title of the book and then it takes off in a different direction. But please tell me that they at least kept my favorite (and infinitely quotable) line "Some days are like that - even in Australia".

I don't remember that direct quote, but that doesn't mean it wasn't in there. It very well could be.

Australia did pay a good part in the movie though.

I've never read the book, so had no basis to judge against. In the book, does Alexander wish on his midnight ice cream sundae that his family would have a bad day so they'd understand how he felt?

It's been awhile since I read it, but I'm pretty sure that's not in it.

He does not. The book is all about the bad day this poor boy is having. And several times he tells people that he is leaving for Australia. But it's all about the bad day HE is having. Not his family. That's why it's a great book for kids cause some days are just like that - you feel the world is ganging up on you. But it's just him.

Aha. Ok. In the movie, he has a horrible day at the beginning while the rest if the family seems to have everything going right. At midnight on his birthday he makes a wish and the next day the whole family except him have disastrous days. The whole thing seems to really be about how families stick together and support each other.

Thanks for the review. I read the book when I was really young, so I don't remember much about it. It looks like a cute movie and I might check it out on Friday.
