Expedition Everest Challenge 2014, let's get going! - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Expedition Everest Challenge 2014, let's get going!
I talked to my daugher and her sister in law and we ALL want to do the challenge in May 2014. We have a year to decide and save money and will be signing up! I'll continue to talk to my BFF and hope she will join us since we can WALK. We're all NON atheletes but my daughter actually walks several miles daily and VERY fast! I'll need to keep motivated so PLEASE help us out. Anyone else have plans for 2014? Can we keep in touch and motivate each other? Looking forward to meeting my new friends!

I am going to try to do the 2013 with my daughter. I am not a runner. I went on line and found some sites about training for a 5k for beginners. Found an 8-week plan at About.com.
My DD and I did this race this past May, and she was 9 at the time. If she can do it, you can too! The hardest part was actually the scavenger hunt clues. I had to ask for help on 2 of them because I'm so dense. But we figured it all out in the end and got our awesome medals!!
There were plenty of folks who were walking it, so it can be done. Be sure when you're doing your training walks, you work hard to reach at least a 15 minute mile minimum. Disney requires 16, so if you know you can confidently work yourself up to a 15 minute (or less) mile, it'll be a piece of cake! It really was a rather fun race, even if it was hot that night! Be prepared for the weather as well!

We too did EE and man was it HOT!!! When we ran it was 80 degrees with 90% humidity so be prepared for that for sure! So what you may train for at home, might not be the same conditions there...so plan for a slower pace! The running part is easy...its the scavenger hunt thats the challenge! We too had to ask for help...they arent easy! Youre going to have a blast!! Enjoy!!

thanks everyone! The information is very helpful. We are still over a year out so anything can happen/change before then but we're still planning to go. So far it's 4 of us. We 'train' playing Trivia on DTunes and walking ALOT. We've heard about 'renting points' so we can stay at AKL. We're all poor so it's usually the Value resorts for us but we're hoping to splurge this time. We'll have to look into the point thing. It's so exciting to PLAN and look forward to this! We can't wait!

looks like we're down to 3 people (one is a guest according to her physician!) and perhaps just my daughter and I. I'm saving hard as she's finishing school and MAY not have work by then. Actually, it works out better if she doesn't. She'll be in school teaching during the race week so she wouldn't be able to go. Is that selfish of me? My serious training will start in the spring and continue for the following year until the race, or later. I've always walked fast so I'm hoping this won't be such a stretch to walk a bit faster. I also normally participate in a couple 5k's during the summer so I'll be sure to get into as many as possible which will give me a good idea of times. Good luck everyone who will be doing the 2013 race. Please let me know how it went and any hints/helps you can share!

The clues arent like trivia...they are harder lol. When you register, they will send you a few sample clues (at least they did for us last year) and honestly, those were easier! I dont know if there is anyway to prepare for them, maybe if you have done the race a few times, you might get it, as you can keep the cards for future reference. Alas, we didnt keep ours. Im sure if you google online, you might find something. I know that there is a youtube video of someone doing it, pretty hysterical actually but it made me nauseous watching him with all the bouncing around that happens.
If you are planning to do this in 2014, you have lots of time to take it slow and add more milage as the weeks go bu! The medal is cool, its an actual working compass!!

Are there any recap/comments on the 2013 Exp Everest challenge? I'd love to read how it went, what you thought, pictures, etc!? I need MOTIVATION and this is how I'm going to get it! What were the crowds like, runners, trivia, weather........?? What did you think/feel and would you do it again and if so...what would you do differently???

I did the race in May. It was my first ever. I was just recovering from a sinus infection and was seriously worried.
However it was great!!! The weather was really nice. 72 degrees by the time we started. I averaged at 14 1/2 minute mile for 3 miles pre-sickness. There were a ton of walkers. I alternated between walking and jogging. My DH and DS (10) dusted me after the first 200 yards. What I didn't figure on was finishing the race part and then running back through the park for the clues. It ended up being almost 5 miles instead of 3.1. But still...I finished and got my medal!!!
I am really glad it didn't rain, because I didn't do any training in the rain. Since we want to do the race again next year, I think I will do some rain running to be on the safe side.
Also there were a ton of new racers. The DJ asked for a show of hands for new racers and those that have never done a 5K before. Wow! It was like a sea of hands. It made me feel a lot more comfortable.

Where is Amy? I thought she was planning to do this one?
