WWYD - Wrote down tip for server, home now but only charged for meal - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

WWYD - Wrote down tip for server, home now but only charged for meal
We ate at Akershus last Tuesday morning and I know I wrote down a tip for our server when I used my charge card. I was very careful to make sure my copy matched the one I signed and left. This Tuesday when we were home, I noticed my card was only charged for the meal, not the tip. Here it is a couple of days later and there have been no changes or additional charges to reflect the tip I wanted to leave. I did go to Allears to make sure that the tip wasn't already included in the meal - the menu says it's not. WWYD? Contact Disney about it or write it off as a mistake? If I look at our Photopass pictures, I should be able to find out our table number and possibly our server but what would I even say? Opinions/experiences would be greatly appreciated.
ETA - Thinking back, I do remember a tip being written in. Our meal was 140.55 and we wanted to leave a 25 dollar tip. When the server transferred my numbers from one slip to the one we left, he wrote a total of 265.55 which I changed to reflect 165.55. so again, what would you do?
I don't think I'd do anything if it were me. It's too bad that someone made a mistake when they entered the final amount, but it seems like you did your part.

I bet that's what happened. When there is any kind of crossed out or changed part of a written tip, it is at most places completely disregarded to make sure that it wasn't changed by the wrong person. I'm not sure what I would do in your case. If you can pin down who your server was, I'm sure you could go through Disney guest services to get a tip to that server if you really want to.

I'd contact them and try to get the tip to the proper person. Do you save your receipts? The server's name should be on the receipt.
Last year when we were checking our bags with RAC, my DH forgot to give the guy a tip. He realized it after we'd left for the park. When we returned he went to the desk and asked if he could leave a tip for the RAC CM. They took the money and said they'd get it to him.
To be honest I'd probably forget it now. I would be worried my tip didn't make it to the correct person, particularly as I have only ever seen first names on receipts and it's often likely that two or more people have the same name. No, I also think that you did what you were supposed to. That's why I generally stick to cash tips, it gives me confidence the person who deserves the tip gets it.
If the server was exceptional, I'd try and get the tip to them. If they were average or slightly above, I'd forget it.
At a local restaurant at home, we went out to eat and I had a gift certificate and a coupon or something, so there were multiple discounts. After I got home I realized I tipped for the lesser amount and not the whole meal. It was a big difference and she was really great so I went back with a note explaining and apologizing and envelope, gave it to a manager and that was that.
But your situation is harder because first you have to try and track down your table, then the server, then try and get Disney to give it to them after that. But if he was good enough that it would be worth the effort, it'd be really nice of you.
I think the server may have gotten the tip. Many years ago when I worked in a restaurant beck in college, if a tip was charged, we would take it in cash when they rang the bill. In you case, if the final amount was wrongly entered, it may have been after the server took the tip. This was 40 years ago so things may have changed.

I guess I don't understand this. Where would he have taken the tip from? I didn't leave any cash and if he took cash from somewhere, wouldn't it have to be replaced somehow?

I think huntermom is referring to the old "cash out at the end of the night" paradigm, in which all of the restaurant's servers add up the tips they've gotten by credit and debit cards at the end of their shift, and are given the total amount in cash to take home with them. In this case, if a customer's credit card were undercharged, the restaurant would come up short, not the server, since the server already got their full tips in cash.
I doubt if this is how Disney works their tips, since paying by cash is so rare these days, especially at WDW where a large percentage of diners are on-site Guests using the dining plan or room charging. Also, being the gigantic conglomerate that they are, it would not surprise me if Disney paid servers their credit card tips by check, either along with their normal pay or as a separate check, the way many companies reimburse business expenses. However, my guess is that the server would still get their tip in the event of an accidental undercharge like yours, since the tips are probably calculated by what you write into the tip line on the CC slip, not by how much your credit card is charged. But that's just a guess.
No matter how Disney works it Darlene, this is not your fault and you shouldn't worry about correcting it. You filled out a slip to leave a certain amount for a tip, and if your card was undercharged - it was most likely your server who did it, so your server is the one who will have to live with the mistake. My opinion is, you should just forget about it, and your consience should be clear.

I find this interesting. In June of 2013, I went to Akershus for breakfast and paid with my Disney Dream Rewards Card. I got the receipt saying how much I had left on the card, but when I went to pay for the next thing, that money that should have gone to the tip was still on my card. So I called someone and they assured me that the waitress would get her tip, although I never saw any additional charges to my room or my card.
This brings me to the next question since this particular place is KIND OF a buffet, what kind of tip -what percentage-do you leave? I had been told to only leave 10% for breakfast buffets when they only bring you juice or coffee. But I understand that for dinner there is a cold buffet and they also bring your entree to your table. What is appropriate to tip? For some reason I thought there was an 18% tip included and I only wanted to leave an extra 2%.
Also I am reading a review on TripAdvisor which says that you are only allowed one trip to the cold buffet. Is this true? Is coffee not included with the fixed price for dinner?

At all three meals here, only the cold offerings are on the buffet line. Everything hot is brought to the table by your server. I'm not sure who says you can only go to the cold offerings once. We've eaten here several times and we were never told there was a limit to the cold offerings - it was always "help yourself." As for tip, 18% is for parties of 6 or more but buffet or not, I always start at 15% and go up (or down) according to the service I get. Most times, at Disney, I end up leaving close to 20% because of the service - again, that includes the buffet where they clean up a lot of dishes (soemtimes more than just your typical sit down meal).
