Rent car or use buses? First time flying! Help! - Page 3 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

If you're staying on-property and not planning any activities off-property?
Busses, IMO.
However, caveat: I've never been there in April. It's probably mroe crowded then, than my preferred part of the year (January). So my advice may not be as accurate as we'd both like.

I don't see how long is your trip. Weekly rentals are often a value-but if your trip is longer than that -or for any other reason, you may consider using the Magical Express - I doubt you will have to stand on that-and then renting a car for only a few select days after you get there. I like Enterprise -they'll pick you up! I used to get cars at one of the official hotels there by Downtown Disney and I enjoyed walking. If renting a car for only a few days is more cost effective, it might be a good idea.
My DH LOVES not having to drive at all once he gets there, (but we only had one child & two parents = four hands-3 kids? two parents= four hands? That's cutting it close) but we will actually be driving (a rented car) down there this time. He is thinking of taking the bus everywhere except to AK or other resorts.
Sadly, I have seen many women with babies have to stand even while adults younger than I and their teenage children sat despite the fact that I had given up my seat for another mother with kids. It's kind of hard to know what is acceptable and where, for example, I once tried to give up my seat on the NYC Subway to an older man who got insulted. In DC people don't seem to mind-regardless of age. I always taught my daughter to give up seats for mothers with children anywhere, and older people south of the Mason Dixon line. It was the best I could come up with at the time.

We too have seen women with babies and children standing...mainly at night. When my dd was 5 she had to stand after a long day in the parks. she fell asleep and my dh ended up having to hold her while standing-that was a long trip back! My husband and I always offer our seat up and we have taught our daughters the same, but found it so STRANGE on our last trip how many women would refuse the seat---one even stood with her young child. My hubby could not stand sitting and watching this mom stand so even though she refused the seat he stood hoping she would take it, but she wouldn't and another man ended up taking the seat. I never thought about offering your seat to a women, child, handicap or elderly being taken offensively depending on where you live. We were always taught that's what one does. That is so interesting.

SOOO...after going back and forth and back and forth trying to figure out what to do, I decided this morning to go ahead a rent a car. It seems more people recommend the buses--and as much as I wanted to go with that--I felt stressed about not having our own car. Weird, I know. We like to drive, and I like the idea of having our own space, the ability to go off property, etc. The toughest part will be lugging the car seats through the airport, but that was worth it to me.
I found a great rental rate this morning (rentalcarmomma)...the price was so good I had to do some research to make sure the company was legit!
Thank you all SOOO much for your input. In the end I had to just listen to my gut and go with the car. Next trip--when my baby isn't a baby anymore--we will do the buses!!
We love the buses and use them every trip, but I think you made the right decision by listening to your gut! Mom's have that intuition and I'm big on listening to it! Have a wonderful trip!
We too have seen women with babies and children standing...mainly at night.
I was always taught to give up my seat to a senior citizen, or anyone with an infant or small child. Even when I was a small boy.
Even now, at 41 ... going on 42? If my hips and my knees aren't crying out for relief, I'll get up for a senior citizen, a pregnant woman, or anyone with a very young child. HEck, if it's someone pregnant or who looks like they have issues standing of their own, I'll usually offer my seat even if my own joints ARE voicing their unhappiness to me.
I just don't understand the lack of manners that prompts people not to even offer - nor the lack of simple gratitude that would result in someone being offended by the offer.
