As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). Well, this may be jumping the gun a little, however....we are planning a trip in October of 2012.
As many of you may have read, we just found out our DS is Type 1 Diabetic. So, he will now have to have insulin on a daily basis. How do we go about traveling by air with this. His current in use insulin pens don't need to be refrigerated, but the extras will need to be. I know we can carry this on with us, but do we need a note from the dr or what?
This is all totally new ground for me. I am soooooo overwhelmed by the whole situation.

You should always carry your meds on. That being said..the best bet would be to go to the TSA web site for current info. Right now you can take completely frozen ice packs to keep meds cold with you. Just let them know and they(TSA) will tell you what how it is done. However rules change all the time so I would just look it up from time to time.
It says you're able to bring things to "cool" your medically needed items! TSA: Travelers with Disabilities and Medical Conditions No note should be needed! I'm assuming it's labeled, and you'll just have to declare it at the checkpoint when you get there!

Make sure that you have the prescription labeling with you as well. Insulin will say that it must be refrigerated on that packaging, so they won't blink an eye that you have pens/vials in a thermal case with a cold pack or two. (In fact, there are so many diabetics traveling each day, they really don't blink an eye at all when they see needles or vials/pens.)
Our endo team did offer up a letter explaining his medical necessity, so I take that with me just in case, but I've never had to show it to anyone.
Another great item for traveling with insulin is the Frio bag. Since you need a consistent temperature for the "current" insulin pen/vial, traveling to WDW in the hotter months can be a trial. The Frio bag makes it easy! No cold pack needed, just moisture and air.
Oh... and did you know that your son can get a lifetime pass for the US National Parks? It's called the "Access Pass" : http://www.nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm
We got our son one when we went on a road trip a few years ago and it was nice to have -- especially since it allowed us to talk to rangers and let them know where we were in the park, putting my mind at ease if we ran into trouble.
I can't look right now but hoping the Frio cases might be the solution for DS when on winter camping trips to keep insulin from freezing or getting too hot in a pocket on the inside of his jacket.

They're perfect for that! They just need to be soaked in water to activate them (maybe once every three days or so) and then kept where they can get some air (like NOT in a ziploc baggie.) They keep insulin pens at a great temp, and they have a bag that is sized for them.

I also travel with a note from my doctor, but have never had to show it either. But better safe than sorry. I've had my carry-ons searched a few times and no one has ever batted an eye at my supplies.
Once I did have to get patted down and have my pump checked/wiped, but it was painless.
Notes from a doctor are not necessary. As I understand it, the Americans With Disabilities Act and medical privacy laws mean you can't be questioned when claiming a medical need, or denied access (requiring a doctor's note creates a situation where access might be denied). The main thing is to have your prescription medications properly labeled so you avoid potential problems with charges of illegal possession. You should have a prescription slip from your doctor whenever you travel, and keep it separate from the medications, in case you need to replace lost items or you run out.

As mentioned the Frio packs work great. I had no problem at all with my insulin and traveling with them. I now have 3 pouches. Two are mainly for the extra insulin and the smaller (2) pen size I use to take with me into the parks if it is hot outside.
I had no trouble with TSA. I actually kept them in my carry on and just told them I had insulin. They didn't even bat an eyelash at it. I had more trouble bringing our pins. The were wondering what kind of jewelry I had...lol
DH and I are both diabetics, and travel with our insulin in a specially designed cold pack. We've only had an issue once with TSA--It was here in Youngstown with our local airport. The TSA people couldn't get a grip on why the insulin needed to be cold. Have never had problems in Pittsburgh or Orlando. In fact, Orlando International has a special line for those traveling with medical needs. It's more like the older TSA screening with no body scanners. I would still have a slip or Medic Alert tag that says you are diabetic just in case you get into some problems (like a hypoglycemic reaction) . It does help others to know what to do for you if you aren't able to tell them.
