As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

Okay -- so I know you can get from the heart of the District to Mount Vernon via public transportation. But has anyone here actually done it?
How long did it take? Was it worth it? (Not is Mt Vernon worth seeing -- I know it is. Is it worth the hassle of getting there this way?)
DD really wants to see Mount Vernon this summer while we're in DC. But we won't have a car this year so the only way we can get there is the Metro/Bus combo.
I figure we'd need to allow a full day to get there, see it, get back. So it also means we'd fly into DC a day earlier to make it work. (The rest of the week we have plans in the morning or at dinner).
Any thoughts?

What about taking metro to National Airport, and grabbing a cab from there? Or even an airport shuttle? I live in DC, but haven't ever done what you're talking about. I have ridden my bike to Mount Vernon, from Roosevelt Island, though! That's FUN! But I guess you're probably not packing bikes, right?! (You could rent them)
I can't help with the bus transport, from what I remember there didn't seem like there was a bus stop near Mt Vernon when we went last year. Though I wasn't specifically looking for one...But, did you look into what your hotel offers for shuttle services? The one we stayed at for a night last year has pamphlets in the lobby for bus tours that could take you to some of the major spots, I'm pretty sure they had one for Mt Vernon as well. Anyway, maybe that is another option for you. Good luck!
I don't recall this being possible either. I would go with a cab if you really want to see it this summer. Or as others suggested, check with your hotel.
We've done the Mt. Vernon tour through TourMobile 3 times.
They only run it during the summer (mid-June through Labor Day). All you'd have to do is ride the Metro to Arlington National Cemetery where you'd buy your tickets for Mt. Vernon. They bus you there and back. The bus leaves Arlington at 11am daily and returns you there at 4pm.
We did it! My friend lived in Alexandria, VA and didn't have a car at the time. We got on at King street metro stop (yellow line) and took it to the end, Huntington. Then, we took the bus from that station to Mt Vernon. It took a while, probably about an hour as the bus makes stops along the way from the last train stop to Mt Vernon. From the center of DC, it would probably take another 20 minutes or so. The bus lets you off right in front of the entrance to Mt Vernon. It was on time and had a good schedule, so it was no problem getting back to Alexandria. It was well worth it and very beautiful.
OH, and if you have an iPhone or Android phone, download the free DC Metro ap! It is real time train and bus status and is AWESOME when trying to get around. It also has a trip planner which shows you what lines to take, when the trains will depart and how long it will take you to get there!

It is possible -- this is how the estate website tells you to get there: Metro and Bus
Take Metro Rail's Yellow Line Train to Huntington Station in Virginia. Exit at the lower level (Huntington Avenue) of the station to catch a Fairfax Connector bus to Mount Vernon. For information about trains, call Metro
Board the Fairfax Connector Bus #101 (Fort Hunt Line) at Huntington Station for a 20-minute trip to Mount Vernon's entrance gate. For fare information and schedules, call Fairfax Connector
I'd just love to hear if anyone has done it.

We looked at taking the boat from DC, which would be beautiful. But when we figured out how long you have at Mt. Vernon, it's not nearly enough time for us. I have the same concern about the Tourmobile, and leaving at 11 really wastes the morning IMHO. The public transit option seems to give us the most flexibility.
