As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

DH has talked me into making a nighttime drive to WDW next month. I am not all that thrilled with this plan, but I have agreed to try it. We have plenty of room in our schedule to stop in the middle of the night if we see it's not working for us, so I will give it a try once.
So, my question is, am I right in thinking that the earliest we can check in on our package stay is 6am on our arrival day? Thought I had read that somewhere. Also, if we see we are going to arrive waaay before that time (it's quite possible we will), is it possible just to go to the desk at Pop Century and book a room only rate for the rest of the night? Or if that situation arises, should we just stop at an offsite hotel and sleep a few hours?

When we use to drive my Dad would stop outside Disney and we would spend the night then get to the resort early in the morning. Sometimes the room was not ready which probably may happen to you. I dont think I would want to chance getting there at night and getting a room. We just left our stuff in the car and went to the parks then came back later for our room.

It depends on when the resort's computers are restarted in the morning -- but I believe it's between 5 and 6AM. (I've read that they can still check you in, but you may have to return to the front desk later to receive some of your paperwork, etc.)
It's unlikely that a room will be ready for you, unless the resort isn't booked up and has a cleaned/prepped room available. If you don't have any room requests on file or if you've done on-line check-in, it's possible you could get a room that early.

You can check-in early, but there is no guarantee your room will be ready at that time. I've checked in at 10am and had a room available, then have tried to check-in and not have a room ready until 3pm. If the room is not ready, you can either leave your things with bell services or just leave them in your car and use the resort transportation to one of the parks.

I'm pretty sure the earliest you can check in is 6am. We had to switch rooms from a studio to a 2 bedroom at SSR last year and for some unknown reason I was up at 3am and called the front desk to see if it was possible that the one bedroom next door was available--lock off, so that we wouldn't have to move. It wasn't and she told me that the earliest I could check in for the new room was 6am.
I'd try to plan your drive to arrive around 7AM if possible. Then if your room isn't ready, you can leave your bags with Bell Service, go have breakfast at the food court, and head to a park. Or rest by the pool if you're needing a rest. If not, just plan on stopping somewhere for the night.
Sept. isn't busy, you may be lucky and be able to get your room. I checked into WL last Aug. at 8AM and our room was ready. I wasn't expecting that, and had already given my luggage to Bell Service to store!
I understand that we most likely will not actually get a room when we arrive. I think our plan is going to be what you suggest, Sue - get there, have breakfast, and head out to the parks. DD is a dream in the car, and DH and I both sleep fairly easily in the passenger seat, so this plan is not sounding wuite as bad. It will be good to get such an early jump on our first day.
