As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

My daughter and I will be joining you in August at almost the same time for our 1st trip also. It's the only time I have off and she's been waiting a long time. What ever comes we'll enjoy it!
We went September 2007 and August 2008 (temps were almost exactly the same), and we will be returning in August 2011. We just can't take the kids out of school anymore - my oldest is in middle school now, and it is too hard. The crowds in late August are very manageable, and if you use Walt Disney World The Unofficial Guide / TouringPlans.com for the best/worst days calendar, it can border on great! We have walked on many rides, and the longest lines we tended to see were about 40 minutes or so.
Will it be hot? Yes, but thanks to lighter crowds, you can go to the parks at opening, head back to the hotel after lunch to swim and relax, and then go back out at dinner time for the evening. You should still manage to get everything done that you want to. Personally (just my opinion) I could never go during mid-summer or over a holiday break. I would rather deal with the heat than the crowds, especially since I have Fibromyalgia and waiting in line can be painful.
Don't worry - just use common sense, drink lots of water, and take advantage of the air conditioned buildings around you and you will be fine. Have a great trip!
Since my oldest will be in middle school come September, I also do not want to take him out of school anymore. So I am thinking about going the last week in August 2011, from all the comments it sounds like it will be hot but the crowds will be low and mangeable. I too also have the spritz fans and will plan on using them all the time, I may need to buy a case of batteries.
It's gonna be HOT...Light clothes, bring some or buy some of those light rain ponchos just in case, sun block too, and hats to block the sun... and no matter how stupid people think they are, those "hand held spritzer fan thingys" they sell in the parks REALLY DO WORK!!! Good luck and have fun!!!
We would have absolutely dropped over from the heat if we hadn't had those hand-held spritzer fans to use while waiting in the lines on the one and only Aug trip we made to WDW!!! Also drink lots of water!
This will be my third year in a row going in August...the first time we just missed the Hurricane the week before...and it rained once. Last year I think it may have drizzled once. As for the heat...HECK YEAH ITS HOT!!!! but we were ok....by August we're used to the heat so its not unbearable....just don't forget a hat or visor to keep the sun directly off your face!!!
This whole thread makes me feel pretty good about going in the last week of August this year. Seems like I'll have lots of good company!! If the weather there is anything like it was here this week then I'll hit every water ride in the place as soon as I get there! We got the park hopper with water park option tickets because I think we'll try to get to each water park if it's hot. I'm also going to get my spritzer fans from walmart today. The Squeeze Breeze got really good reviews - if anyone cares. We're just going to take it easy - we have no kids so no special kiddie worries there. We figure even if it's so hot that we don't want to leave our room we'll just sit on the balcony and watch the savannah animals all day and order room service! Maybe a massage at the spa, dip in the resort pool - and then when night time rolls around we'll go hit one of the parks.
DD & I went in August last year and it was fine. The same temperature there as it was her in PA but at least we were in WDW. We went out in the mornings then took midday breaks then went out again late afternoon early evening. It's not as bad as everyone tries to scare you into believing
We did late August in 2008 and it was fine. It's hot and humid, but it wasn't too terrible (and I don't handle heat well.) We followed the advice given here, lots of indoor attractions, pool breaks, light clothes, and those misting fans were without a doubt our most prized possesion that week (and I am one of those people who thought they were terribly silly, until we stepped into DHS on day 1. Never again will I think of them a silly!)
We encounted the rain, but nothing terrible. Just the isolated storms that popped up. We were welcoming them by day 2 though because it seemed to cool things down a bit and it thinned the crowds out even more. We just put the ponchos on and marched on. We have some wonderful pictures of us in ponchos, it's hysterical. I would recommend bringing some large zip lock bags to put dry clothes in for the kids (not sure how old they are, but it was necessary for ours.) They are fine in wet clothes up to a point and then moods shift swiftly so it was a lifesaver to have backup clothes they could change into without us having to go back to the resort.
We went last year in early-August and NEVER AGAIN!!!!!
We have 2 kids (6 and 9 yrs old then) and decided to go in August so we didn't have to take them out of school. We also went in early August (7-15) due to free dining.
For reference, we went twice in 2007 in February and December and had great weather and low crowds.
In august, the crowds were ridiculous and the heat made my kids almost miserable which in turn made us almost miserable. You can look back at my trip report at http://www.passporterboards.com/foru...gust-trip.html to see how I felt about our August trip.
I think it really comes down to whether or not you have kids and their ages. My wife and I would have been fine with the heat but the kids weren't.
The other big issue I had with August was trying to "get my money's worth". We stayed 8 nights at the Poly and with the crowds and thunderstorms I didn't feel like I got my money's worth.
We may go back in 2012 or even later but it will definitely be a Dec or Feb trip.
We have done August for free dining several times. HS is hot...lots of tar to reflect heat. AK is hot with so much foilage to make it moist and humid. Most lines are inside and all stores are kept really chilly and can be used as respite.
We have never had issues with the heat. We've even endured a hurricane @ WDW and had no issues!
Lyle
