As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Which shore excursion did you choose in Nassau?
We just received our little pamphlet re: the available shore excursions in Nassau. They all sound pretty good to me... so for those of you who did an excursion, which did you choose? And were you happy with that choice?
I would love to hear about anyone's experiences.
Thanks!

I'm going to move this topic over to Planning Your Disney Cruise, as it's more likely to get a response there.

Re: Which shore excursion did you choose in Nassau?
Never done the Disney cruise, but I've been to Nassau several times on cruises, so... Here's what we've done that we liked:
Toured Atlantis (without an excursion) -- my family took a taxi over and wandered around on our own. Saw big turtles for my older sister, saw fish for my younger sister, Dad taught me how bad gambling is by inserting my quarter into a slot machine and winning me $5.
Rum punch cruise -- on my honeymoon. Was fun, BUT there was no bathroom between the boat and the cruise ship, and after several glasses of rum punch... It's fun for adults; I don't think kids are even allowed on it. Beyond the rum, it's a nice tour of the harbor, and they take you to a little island (I think there's a Sandals resort on the island) to hang out on the beach for a bit. I don't see it on the list that DCL offers, though.
Snorkling -- my sisters and I did this when we were younger... It was on an island (don't remember the name) that was used to film Gilligan's Island -- very cool! It was a lot of fun, even though I had a hard time getting used to snorkling. (I was a swimmer, so I was trained not to breathe IN under water!)
Historic Nassau tour -- *yawn* My dad made us go when we were little. It might be a bit more interesting now, but back then, it was "Another old fort?? C'mon, Dad, we're near a beach!"
If DCL offers something at the Pirate Museum, don't do it. My sister says it sucks. But then, she majored in history, with an emphasis in Europe and Latin America. She says it's "totally inaccurate!"

Re: Which shore excursion did you choose in Nassau?
Take the tour of Atlantis because it's there.
Otherwise, why leave a multi-million cruise ship to walk in slums?
I live in NYC and thought I was crazy when I got off the boat and went into town. It was like walking around the South Bronx.

Re: Which shore excursion did you choose in Nassau?
We did the Discover Atlantis tour, too. It includes a tour of the resort's extensive aquarium, and they show you the shops and casino, too (they do hope you'll stay the day and lose your shirt). You can easily do the same thing on your own, though - just pay for your own taxi/water taxi, and pay admission to the Atlantis aquarium.
Personally, I like walking 'round Nassau town (Jennifer is nowhere near as comfy there as I am, though). While the blocks closest to the pier are seedy and filled with too many locals hustling their piece of the tourist trade, if you head inland a block or two more there are many attractive, historic buildings and sights to see.
Downtown Nassau is nothing like the South Bronx. The streets are clean, the buildings are in good repair, there are very few residences (most folks live over the hill, outside of the port) and while you'll occasionally run into a panhandler posing as a tour guide, this isn't a high crime, drug-ridden slum community. This is the capital of the Bahamas. It's a mixture of shops, restaurants, museums, historic sites, a few residences, government buildings, banks, and other business offices. Visitors walking around a strange city can feel insecure, so it's a good idea to go with a couple of companions.

Re: Which shore excursion did you choose in Nassau?
Thanks so much for all the various information. We watched a little travel video (by National Geographic) that showed a bit of Nassau -- which really got us excited about exploring a bit. I think Atlantis sounds intriguing, but then just "touring" a bit on our own sounds enticing as well.
Thanks, again.

P.S. Dave,
Thank you for moving my thread. I must have had a little lapse there and dropped it somewhere. But thanks for the move.

Re: Which shore excursion did you choose in Nassau?
We've done the Caribbean Queen Snorkel boat excursion and love it. Great snorkeling, and one of the less expensive of the excursions. If you're not much into snorkeling, just walking around Nassau is great. We always take a few hours to do this, and have a great time hitting the smaller shops off the beaten path.
Enjoy whatever you choose to do!

Re: Which shore excursion did you choose in Nassau?
My daughter and I have done the Blue Lagoon excursion twice. The first time without the Dolphin encounter, and the second time, with. We thoroughly enjoyed it both times.
The 1st time, the water was calm and the time relaxing on the beach was just what we needed.
The 2nd time, the water was extremely choppy and the ocean side of the island was off limits, due to undertoe. Thank goodness we had booked the Dolphin encounter. We loved it to the max! I can not say enough good things about the encounter.
Included in the price was towels, transportation to and from, the dolphin encounter, lunch, and non-alcoholic fruit punch, and of course free reign of the island. The food was delicious, and the people were friendly. I would definitely do it again.
The plus side is that if you take the earlier shuttle(2pm?), you can still have enough time to wander the streets of Nassau, and do some serious shopping. Best of both worlds, I'd say!
