Forums Closed
|
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: More Cuts in Store?
It's very sad to hear park attendance is struggling so much, but in the current climate, it's hardly surprising. I hope it picks up again really soon.

Barring anything too traumatic the RVers will do our part to boost attendance 3 times in 2003!

Re: More Cuts in Store?
I feel pretty much like Rockland -- we'll be there. In spite of a rotten economy, in spite of the threat of war, in spite of all the other "stuff" that's going on -- we'll be there.
Still, in view of how poorly the economy is doing overall, it would be surprising if Disney did NOT have to make some cut backs. And why not? Everyone else has had to cut back!
The economy is like the weather. Wait long enough, and it will change.

Re: More Cuts in Store?
I think this will pass soon. Remember how many cutbacks came in after 9/11, and they were temporary too. I guess we all better spend some more money on Disney movies, Disney clothes, Disney gifts, etc. (like nobody here does that anyway! )

Re: More Cuts in Store?
Aunt Polly's wasn't serving lunch when we were there recently and I did notice some "random fireworks" going off at odd times in the MK after the park was closed(we could see the fireworks from our room).Despite President's Week, attendance was light and the resort was not at capacity. FastPasses were not in effect at Splash Mountain on 2 days, and rides were walk-ons after the fireworks until closing. We had a great time though and have booked the next trip already!

Re: More Cuts in Store?
This is from aTourGuideMike.com
It is on the left side of the home page so it's for every one.
"For the second half of March, the 16th through the 31st, three more SpectroMagics at the Magic Kingdom were cut, leaving Saturday night as the only itinerary option to view the popular nighttime parade"
"The Fantasy In the Sky Fireworks remain for every evening at 7:15 p.m. The exception is 8 p.m. on Sat, March 22, Mon, March 24, and Sat, March 29."
"Epcot's Future World begins closing at 6 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m. beginning on Sunday, March 23 and continues with the new hours through the first two weeks of April (and its last week as well). There were no more cuts at the other two theme parks."
"Blizzard Beach will now remain closed through the entire month of March, and not open until Wednesday, April 9. During the busiest two weeks of April both before and after Easter, the park will close at 6 p.m. instead of the previously scheduled 7 p.m."
"Typhoon Lagoon remains open, but its closure was also reduced to 6 p.m. from 7 p.m. during the busy two weeks of Easter as well."
Also, MK hours for april have been CUT!! Now I'm really pissed, er, excuse me honked off! Of course they can change....
Thanks guys for listening! I hope you can catch this post!
Wendy
I'll post more tomorrow about April when it becomes available on tourguidemike!

Re: More Cuts in Store?
According to my folks, who aren't necessarily the most reliable sources of info and may have just been trying to make me feel better about not getting the elephant job, Disney has imposed a hiring freeze. That was pretty shocking, b/c when I lived in Orlando, Disney was one place that was always hiring. That can't bode well for the economy in the area.
I feel bad for the CM's who may be losing hours, and the people in the area who really need those jobs.
I know it's a bummer to have the hours cut back. When we were there in January, everything pretty well closed up by 7:00. On the other hand, we used the early closing hours to explore the resort (WL - awesome!), go to the movie at Ft. Wilderness, and go to PI - things we didn't bother with in the past when the parks were open late. We had so much fun! Remember, even early closing is better than not being there at all! I keep trying to finesse the finances to find a way to get in one more trip before our AP's expire. Don't care what time they close, just wanna go again!

Pat we've been reading that in our local papers up here as well. They have articles about WDW practically daily.

Re: More Cuts in Store?
When we were at Disney in September 2002 we met up with one of college friends that was a manager at Animal Kingdom. She left Animal Kingdom in May of 2001 and Disney was already having problems. Her roommate still works there and keeps her updates but she told us that the department managers had been asked to do operating plans for a 5% drop, 10% drop and a 25% drop in attendance. She knew it was getting bad and 9/11 didn't help much. She said one of their options was to do black days where on given days certain parks would be closed. I'm glad to see that hasn't happened yet. When we were down in December (1st part) it seemed that the lines were longer than we anticipated but I don't think they had as many openned. We were back the last weekend in Jan and it was pretty empty.

Re: More Cuts in Store?
Due to low attendance, an entire wing of AKL is closed, two floor of Yacht/Beach Club. Pop Century is also being shelved until further notice...
...DVC is going full speed ahead with Saratoga Springs though. DVC is a huge moneymaker for Disneym they are putting everything into it right now.

Re: More Cuts in Store?
Ack! We won't make it back until Dec, I hope things are looking up by then! Our Disney Store closed also without any notice (at least not that I was aware of). I'm completely bummed.
