Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

PLEASE HELP: Generic Planning for a trip in Aug/Sept 09

I had SO MUCH FUN on my recent trip to Disney, that I'd like to make plans to go again late next summer.

I know it is REALLY early to make plans, and I know that Disney 2009 pricing isn't even available (at least not on their website), but I am trying to get a sense of the BEST ways to save money.

My "tenative" plans:

Take only 2 (DD13 and DS11) of my 3 kids (DD15 is "unimpressed" and would likely not want to go--I'd certainly allow her to come if she wanted, but I am not holding my breath) and leave my DH at home. He is 100% fine with that (who am I kidding--he says he is 100% fine with it, but in reality he is probably only 90% fine with it--he says he does not understand why I want to go again so soon, and claims he does not want to go again)

Go from 8/29/09 thru 9/5/09 (I know, I know--hurricane season--yes I'd buy insurance)

Stay in a moderate--possibly CS (we have always stayed in the Beach Club in the past)

Take advantage of free dining (hoping they will offer again)--I do have a Disney Visa.

Spend 2 days in the waterparks (possibly going to a park at night) and 1 day at each of the 4 parks--no need to park hop.

What are everyone's best money saving tips? What potentially expensive blunders am I making? What is the cheapest way to book?

Please chime in an let me know the error of my ways!! I so appreciate the wealth of knowledge you are able to provide!!

Looks like you are pretty prepared already! You've got the Disney Visa, which can save you money and you already know about the possible free dining. Are you planning flying? Depending on where you are for airports, you can start monitoring flights when they open up. If you are planning to utilize Magical Express, you'll save yourself a car rental.

Create a savings jug where you throw your change & dollar bills for spending money. Start the kids with their banks so they have their own spending money too, that helps cut down on some of the "I want's".

You've visited WDW before, so you know the basics of the parks which will help you for this next trip. You know which things you can skip, or are MUST do's for you and your family. It seems like you've got a pretty decent handle on things so far, so relax and take things as they come with the planning. The 2009 rates should be released soon, and then you can see the exact cost of your package.

Happy planning!

For me, I book out as far as I can and make payments on it each month as if it were a bill. Rates for 09 should be coming out in August so in theory you'd be able to book this vacation next month & thus start making payments on it.

I almost rarely have cash on me; when I do, all of the change (coin) I receive goes in a great big piggy bank. I don't take it to coinstar, I wrap it all up by hand and cash it in. I also try to take $20 from each paycheck and put in the jar and this is our spending money.

Good luck!!

Anyone have any advice about whether I should go directly thru Disney, or one of the Authorized Disney Vacation Planner Websites? And when I should start the reservation process?

Sounds like you have some really great plans. The pricing should be in soon for 2009, but airfare doesn't go on sale until about 300-330 days before travel (if you need it). Usually the deposit to hold your trip is small, the wholesalers my travel agency uses usually require about $200 plus insurance if you opt for it, and then you can save up on your own and pay it in full 30-45 days before you leave or make monthly payments.

I of course would recommend using a travel agent (wink, wink,) that specializes in Disney & they can add promo's to your package as they become available over time.

Have a wonderful time planning...it is SOOO much fun.

Do you belong to AAA - if you do you might want to call a AAA TA and see hwat kind of discount you can get. You can book packages through them - the discount will only be on the room portion but you can get a nice savings....

I'm leaving my husband at home this trip too! He also says he doesn't want to go, but I think deep down he will miss it.

But I am hoping to take my girls one at a time in 2009. I think it would be great to have one-on-one experiences with them in disney.

It sounds like you are planning on not paying for the park hopper option, if that is so and you get free dining remember you will have to eat in that days park choice. Also check and see if paying for 2 one day waterpark tickets is more or less than adding the waterpark and more option. I believe the waterpark option is $50 per ticket.

Never too early to plan. I always use a TA just in case they can get a discount I don't know about. Have fun planning.

I always use a Disney approved TA - they keep an eye out for discounts, and they also do all of my ADRs as soon as it is possible. Last summer I had all my ADRs done, and about 6 weeks before the trip I decided to surprise my DD (18) with breakfast at CRT - just the two of us. My TA was able to get me the table, used her magic, and I was able to pay for it the day of the breakfast (in most cases you have to give a charge card, and it is charged when the ressie is confirmed) so there are definitely advantages with an agent.

It's never too early to start planning and with the 2009 rates potentially coming out in the next few weeks you'll be able to book. You can put the deposit down and make payments as you have the money or wait until 45 days before the trip and pay the whole balance. You can also use the Disney Visa deal. Even if you book now a TA or yourself can watch for any discounts and see if they apply, same with free DDP if it is offered. TAs should also be able to make your ADRs for you.
