As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

I've posted a lot lately that my DD Kathryn has joined her school's JV Volleyball team. What I haven't posted is that this is her first team sport since she was 6! (she's 14.5 now). And, like her mother, she is a large girl. She tires a bit faster than some of the other girls, and just can't run as well. One of the reasons she joined the team.
The coach tells her every practice, every game how proud he is of her for sticking it out. He tells us. He tells her, with confidence, that she CAN do it. He doesn't yell at her when she messes up during a game, just shows or tells her how to fix the problem.
She played a JV game and helped in a Varsity game (they were down a couple of girls) today - two things happened that made me realize how lucky she is to have such a great coach.
First - she PLAYED. I don't mean she was on the floor, I mean she was all over the court, volleying the ball, serving and SCORING on a serve, SPIKING and scoring!!
Secondly - the team they played tonight had a horrid coach. DH was a line judge (stand at a corner and watch to see if and when a ball goes out, which side of the ball it lands on, and who hit it last), well, he was next to the seats where their coach was.. SHE would yell at them: "You wouldn't have missed that if you weren't so FAT!", "I can't believe you did that, you're awful", "If you can't play better than that - you don't need to be on the team" and other things that had some of the girls in tears - people, those girls lost to our girls by a total of 2 points!!!! They were great players, just made a few bad plays more than Kathyrn's team did.
So, if your kids play a sport and have a great coach - thank him/her.
If you're a great coach - thank you. Some-one's mom will love you to death for that.

Positive reinforcement and instruction should always be the philosophy of a coach.
I never say anything negative to my baseball players. When something goes wrong, I tell them what they should do next time.
Coach = Teacher. You have to realize that you can instruct as much as possible, but it's up to the players to execute.
I can't believe she would talk like that to the students - especially in front of an audience of parents!
I've had a lot of really great coaches, and some just-okay ones, but none that were absolutely awful. A few have made comments before that wounded my pride, but none of them were really hurtful, and I like a tough coach anyway. My cousin's high school basketball coach, though...wow, he's insane. He's won so many championships though, they just let him keep coaching even though he's borderline-abusive. My cousin hates playing for him, but she loves basketball, so she puts up with it - I feel sorry for her though.
I help to coach girls' softball, and I would say I'm a positive coach. As long as the kids are trying their hardest, I don't get upset if they make a mistake or whatnot (or if I do, I don't show it - it's just not fair). It's little kids, too, so it's not like we're playing in the World Series. I just want them to give it their best and have fun.
Awesome! That's so true. I hope your DH will contact the supervisor (is it a school team?) or principal of the other team to advise what he heard. That's just unacceptable.
I can't believe that coach would be so ruthless to a group of girls... jeez! And at an age where they are so easily influenced by the things adults say! No wonder so many kids end up being resentful of adults! I'd have a few un-quotable statements for that woman had I heard her talking to my kids like that!!

A few years back when my DNephew was playing baseball his coach was like that. He would yell at the kids, kick dirt on them and then give them a real talking to. All the boys did and played their best. But their best just wasn't good enough for the man (and I use the term loosely). It looked like a little child throwing a temper tantrum. His wife was the score keeper and after a game if they lost he would take the papers from his wife and tear them up in front of the boys while he was chewing them out. Most of the boys ended up finishing the season and went to the head coach of the sports program and said they would not play another season if he was the coach. Even his own son didn't want to play for him.
Anyway, he got dumped and the new coach was so much better and the boys played better too. Just goes to show you what a little kindness and encouragement will do for you.
