Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Our elementary lunch is $2.25, our middle school lunch is $3.00, and I have no idea how much high school lunch would be. My kids all bring cold lunch, and it is more expensive than buying, but since our hot lunches are mostly pre-packaged heated-up kinds of things, I'd prefer they'd bring lunch from home anyway. Mostly we do sandwiches, soy milk or juice boxes, fruit and a treat (sweet or chips, etc.). Pretty boring, but they don't seem to care!

My kids will have hot lunch. It's part of tuition!!
We're a small school, 600 students in 3yr old to 12th grade, and the only way to get a hot lunch program was to GUARANTEE them that they would be serving all 600 kids each day.
It cost me $3.25 a day for Lauren, and $3.75 a day for Kathryn. (all at once - for the whole year! - talk about a whammy!)
I don't mind too much - they get a lot to eat, and much more balanced than when I sent cold lunch (always a Peanut butter and Honey sandwich, a fruit cup, pudding or jello, some fresh fruit if we had it, some chips or crackers and a water bottle)
I will be taking my cold lunch to school. At least 3/4 of the time, if not more.

I used to go by the lunch menu, and would bring lunch on days that they were having something I didn't like. Then in High School, I would go through the "snack" line, where they had pizza, fries, chicken strips, etc. every day and get fries and a Snapple. Nutritious.

My nephews eat the hot lunch unless they request a packed lunch. My nieces do the opposite - bring a cold lunch unless they request the hot one.

When DD was in school, she almost always did hot lunch at school. For only one child, it was more expensive to buy the things for lunches every day. Plus she got a variety of foods. I had lunch with her when she was in elementary school, and the food was really good!

However, if you have more kids, it could get pricey fast doing hot lunch for all of your kids. In that case, you could probably buy things in bulk for making lunches substantially cheaper. I guess you would also have to factor in what your kids will eat. Some kids only want lunches from home because they don't like what the school serves. Good luck!

My oldest does mostly hot with a few cold days per month thrown in. He is allergic to nuts and the school staff was so great about giving him a package of graham cracker cookies as a substitute for the dessert. He's going to a new school this year (4-6 building) so I hope they continue. He loves the spaghetti, beef/barley soup, and pizza they serve at school. Our lunches for students are at $2.00.

As a teacher, I take my lunch as I count Weight Watcher points.

Our school lunches are $1.65, including milk. The kids do have choice of salad (some actually do choose that, they make a heck of a salad in our district) or hot entree's... and usually the choice of a cold sandwich too. It's not a bad choice offered; DD finally got tired of it, tho, by the end of the year last year. We buy 'natural' (no nitrite/nitrate) sandwich meats, so it's usually cheaper for her to buy lunch.

I give DS $5 each day for lunch, but he only uses about 1/2 and saves the rest. I'm not sure on the cost of a lunch at the high school, but they charge $2.60 for a lunch at the junior high school where i teach. Entree, side, salad/fruit/juice, milk. Students are required to get an item from each category, even if it is just 1 piece of lettuce or fruit salad. Fries are 75 cents extra, but have to be purchased with a lunch. I've been told by my students not to eat the salad because kids spit in it!!! EWWWWW!

I always had some money in the school account in case the kids wanted a hot lunch, but they usually preferred to take a sack lunch from home. Since I've worked full time since they were small they started making their own at an early age. When they hit high school they had an open campus for lunch (and places to eat right across the street from the school) so I started giving them a budget for lunch. They could take a lunch from home and save the $, eat in the cafeteria and the budget would cover it, or go out and then they were on their own if it cost more. They usually took their lunch several days a week so they could afford to eat out once or twice a week. It was a good lesson in making your money last. They also learned how to eat cheaply when they went out so they could do it more often.

Have any of you actually eaten lunch at school with your kids? The reason I ask, is that you'd be surprised at the amount of food that goes to waste on the "hot lunch" plates. So many of the kids just pick at the lunch, drink the milk, and eat the dessert/fruit. It was another reason I've kept sending a lunch box every day. I want to be sure that my kids have a full tummy to learn on.

Yep....time is the big factor here too...............By the time she had lined up to buy lunch there was not enough time to eat it. So she started bring a packed lunch.

DD Graduated this year Yey!! No more school stuff for me!!!

I work in the cafeteria at dd's school and I too am amazed at how much gets thrown away everyday. On pizza and hamburger days plates are cleaned but most other days over half the food gets thrown out. While I think the cafeteria serves great food (I eat there every day) they do serve some things that kids just dont like. They have over the last few years started to off 2 entrees and the kids get a choice which is good. Like on any day that they serve pasta (spaghetti, lasangana) they also serve chicken sandwiches.

Our lunches were $1.25 last year and will go up this year but not sure if it will be $1.75 or $2.00 yet which I think is a big jump. My girls usually alternate and with half the year cold lunches and half the year hot lunches. This year they have both asked to buy some days and take others so we will see how this goes. One perk of me working there is I can make something hot (soup, raviolis etc) and put it in the thermos and bring it with me for younger dd since she eats right after I get there so its still hot.
