A really stupid question About This Page:

Okay, so I have a really stupid question for those of you back east (remember I've lived in Denver my whole life, and we just recently traded in our buggies, wagons and horses for cars.)

Anyway, we have the Dish Network with the east coast feeds, meaning we have the New York channels. Here in Denver, the news comes on at 10 p.m. MST (making that 12 EST). In New York it starts at 11 p.m. EST (or 9 MST).

So here is my (really stupid) question: Do those of you on the east coast stay up later to watch the news, t.v. shows, and sports events, meaning an hour less sleep than us? Or does your work day start an hour later than ours, meaning instead of working 8 to 5 you work 9 - 6?

We're EST and work from 8-5. Our news comes on (NBC) at 11, and (FOX) at 10. Aren't time delays confusing!!! Hope this helps! Have a great day.

The time delay is confusing, but what is more confusing is how and why people stay up so late to watch the news.

How do they survive on less sleep?

Or am I jsut getting really old and need more sleep?

I lived the first half of my life on Pacific Time. The last 18 years have been on Mountain Time. Like you, Fortissimo, I wonder how they manage. I do remember that the movies always started at 9 and ran until 11. When I was in college, all studying stopped on Wednesday night at 10 to watch Dynasty! Although I am posting this late, (11pm Mountain Time) I really pay for it when I stay up too late.

I work from 7am-3pm. This means that I have to leave my house at 6:15am every day.(I get up at 5:30am)
I am generally in bed before 10pm.
We watch the 6pm news in our house!!

Many New York City stations do have a 10:00 PM newscast. It's mostly the stations owned by CBS, NBC and ABC that have the 11:00 PM newscasts, as network prime time runs from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM, Eastern time. I remember when the hours after 11:00 PM were considered an unprofitable No Man's Land. Then, when the popularity of late night shows picked up, that 11:00 PM newscast sandwiched in between Prime Time and Late Night became a golden time slot.

You should really be wondering how folks manage to watch Letterman or Leno after the news. Many New Yorkers (and NJ/Connecticut suburbanites) have a one-hour morning commute (or worse). While 9-5 is probably still more common than 8-5 (or 9-6) around there, the commute sure does lengthen the day. Been there, done that for almost 25 years.

There's a reason they call it "The City That Never Sleeps."

I was wondering how people manage to watch "Monday Night Football," but I never thought about Leno or Letterman. When I watch Leno, it is on our New York feed so it comes on at 9:30.

I can't imagine a long commute to work. I go crazy when my 15 minute drive becomes 25 minutes!

Over the years I've changed my TV viewing habits. When I was much younger, I watched Johnny Carson, then I felt the need to stay up through the 11:00 news, but the last couple of years I find it hard to make it past 9:30.

I'm up at 6:00 am and the same news is on then anyway.

I work from 3 days a week, but I travel to NYC 2 days a week to work at the Wordl Trade Center. On the nights before these working days I have to be in bed at 9:30 so I can get up at 5AM and do the 2-3 hour commute to the city (it varies with the traffic). So, I can sympathize with you, Fortissimo. My solution is to read my news on the net instead of watching it on TV. The other 3 days I get to sleep until 6:15AM when I get up to get the kids ready for school and drive them to the bus.

The good thing is that I can make my own hours at work, whether home or in the office, so if I have a good commute and get to the office at 7:30, I can leave between 3:30 and 4. This helps a lot with the return commute!

I have a very short commute now - but it just means I work that much longer. Of course, now I'm an entrepreneur while I used to be on a payroll, so I can't really blame the commute.

There was a kind of zen to that long commute. I took mass transit, which meant I could read, think or snooze during the journey. This was often my most creative "think" time for the day - no phones, no interruptions.

For about half of those 25 years the various studios I worked in were a short walk from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (which usually meant a half-hour commute rather than an hour). For the rest of the time I also walked 15-25 minutes as part of the commute (generally much nicer than a subway ride, and faster than a bus ride on city streets). I enjoyed the exercise, the (relatively) fresh air, the scenery, and the higher-quality think time.

All this experience with commuter buses and long walks prepared me handsomely for WDW, too!
