Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Need advice on coping with a fear of flying

Does anyone have any helpful hints that I could pass on to my best friend, Jennifer, to help her with her fear of flying?
She will be going with me to WDW in November and is freaking out about the flight. Is there something I can do to ease her mind?
When I bought the plane tickets, I made sure I got her a seat away from the window, although that is exactly what helped me get through my first flight. What do you think?

Has she talked to her physician about getting some medication to help her relax?

Re: Need advice on coping with a fear of flying

I HATE to fly.

What gets me through the flight is Dramamine and EarPlanes. Dramamine helps with motion sickness and it makes me sleepy. If I can sleep through the flight, I tend to worry about it less. I need the EarPlanes due to problems with the air pressure, but the added bonus is you can't hear all the "plane" noises, but you can still hear the person beside you.

I am sure holding her hand would help, too!

Re: Need advice on coping with a fear of flying

My doctor gave me Ativan, a small dose and it worked! Plus from our neck of the woods Erin, it's only a little over an hour long flight. It's seriously short! Make sure she knows that. Have her pack things that will keep her busy, I had my iPod and my Playstation Portable and I also distracted myself by watching the DVD that the guy the seat beside me had playing. And then it was over before I knew it and I'm willing to do it again.....but only to WDW... I gotta work my way up to longer flights sloooowly!

Re: Need advice on coping with a fear of flying

Erin,
I am not a great flyer. I fly when I have to for work, but opt to drive if I can.

Here are some things that help me:
1. Don't sit by window or close the window covering.
2. Don't sit by the wing. You can hear the wheels, flaps, etc. going up and down and it freaks me out.
3. I stuff my face in a good book (usually a favorite, not a new one) and try to ignore the surroundings. I pretend I am at home on the sofa or something. Try to minimize looking around because that makes you realize you are on a plane.
4. Look at the plane size. Try to avoid the smaller planes. I just flew back from Cincinnati on a plane that had 1 seat of the left and 2 seats on the right. It was small and a difficult flight for me!
5. Keep telling yourself to relax.
6. Many might not agree and its probably not the best option, but if its an evening flight, have a glass of wine before boarding. I don't mean get drunk, but a little glass to relax you a little.

Re: Need advice on coping with a fear of flying

Oh My Goodness! I flew for the first time in 14 years last December to WDW from Newark (2+ hours) My DS (5) really wanted to fly and I was SCARED!!! There are TONS of websites for fear of flying with boards just like this - many are hosted by pilots themselves that REALLY can't understand anyone being fearful. The best advice that I recieved was to meet the pilots ahead of time. Tell the person at checkin that you are a fearful flyer and would like to meet the pilot - THEY LOVE THIS! If the counter person seems reluctant - don't give up. I did this on both legs of the trip and it helped a great deal. The second thing was a little "mind trick" - First, GET ON THE PLANE! The hardest part of flying is sitting in the boarding area. Once seated, start with the number 5 - look straight ahead, not around, and say "I see ____"do this 5 times then say "I hear ______" 5 times (different items each time) then "I feel ______ (the seat, my bag, my clothes, whatever) repeat this excerise from 5 times down to 1 each time IT REALLY WORKS. My DH knew how hard this was for me but I was SO PROUD getting off that plane in Orlando -I even did Space Mountain that trip!! We are flying again in December - PM me if you want more info for your friend. Good Luck!! Re: Need advice on coping with a fear of flying

I don't have any problem, but flew all to Europe and all over there with a friend who is terrified of flying. She took Valium and we had a great time. Make sure if Jennifer does this, that she has someone else with her, and someone to take any kids in hand. It helped my friend, and added some really great memories to the trip (she was so out of it from Paris to Rome, that she grabbed our rolls off of our dinner plates, stood up, walked to coach and started offering them around to people in coach. - our 7 kids were laughing so hard they fell out of their seats!)

Re: Need advice on coping with a fear of flying

Remind her that the pilot and crew want that plane to safely get to Orlando (or home again) just as badly as she does. I like the idea of meeting the pilot because that makes it a little more personal and may reassure her again that there is a real person at the stick who wants to go home to his/her family that night.

Also, do offer to hold her hand! I basically grew up in an airplane because my Dad was a pilot, but I still like to hold DH's hand for take-offs and landings. And if you happen to feel the gear locking into place when you are on descent, it can be scary -- I was on a jet once that the gear was particularly noisy and jerky and I hated it until I realised that actually that was probably the best thing ever. There was no doubt that the gear was down, locked and ready for landing!!
