Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Montreal/Quebec City

We are taking a short trip to Quebec at the end of the summer. I would love to hear from other Passporters who have vacationed there. What do you recommend we see and do?

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Montreal/Quebec City

My aunt and uncle have traveled to Montreal several times- it's one of their favorite cities in the world. Two of their favorite places they have always recommended to others were the Botanical Gardens and of course, the Notre Dame Basillica. I saw their photographs too- they were spectacular, both places look like amazing places to visit.

Botanical Garden of Montreal

Basillica of Notre Dame

We have quite a few Canadian Passporters who I am sure, can help you with some other sightseeing recommendations- they'll be of great help to you I know!

Re: Montreal/Quebec City

Visit the underground mall, Olympic park and stadium (no more baseball but it is still cool) and Old Montreal should not be missed. Montreal is a very French-Canadian city so some of the signs are just in French.

Re: Montreal/Quebec City

We went to Montreal and Quebec City in 2003. We fell in love with the area. We stayed at a wonderful B&B in the old port area of Montreal. It was right on Rue St. Paul behind the Basillica Notre Dame. Our 2nd story room had french windows that opened to the cobble stone street below. We fell asleep each night to the sound of horse drawn carriages going clip clop and awoke each morning to the smell of fresh hot homemade chocolate croissants. The innkeepers make the croissants the night before and then served them with your choice in a french omlet. Tre Bien! PM if you want the website.

Learn some French before you go. You'll need it. Some people speak only french. English is the second language but we met several who didn't speak English. We were told that in Quebec City English isn't taught in the schools so finding English speaking people would be more difficult. It was but we did fine. I had an electronic translator and had learned a few key phrases before we went.

Must do's in Montreal:
We took a Grayline Tour on our first morning. You get a wonderful overview and info. We took the 3 hr tour. If you schedule it in advance they'll pick you up from your hotel and get you back there.
Vieux (old) Port at night and during the day
Basilique Notre Dame: take the tour
Place Jaques Cartier: Lots going on in the evenings. Great restaurants. Romantic. (we went in the fall so it was slower on during the week)
Horse drawn carriage ride
Lots of great museums: Centre d'Histoire de Montreal or Pointe-a-Calliere Musee. You've got to do a least one. Need to know the history.

We took the VIA Rail to Quebec City. We had 1st class ticket which included a very nice dinner. It came with adult bevarages AND wine along with snack, appetizer, dinner, dessert, after dinner drink, truffle. The scenery was superb. We traveled on the opposite side of the St. Lawrence River. As we crossed the river you could see Quebec City on the cliffs. The sun was beginning to set behind the Laurentian Mtns and the city sparkled like a jewel. I wish I had a picture. Everyone on the train gasped when they saw it.

Quebec City must do's:
Take a guided tour of Le Chateau Frontenac then spend some time exploring and enjoying.
Citadelle tour.
Rue Petit Champlain: shop, dine, have maple sugar ice cream.
Visit the Parliament and the Grande-Allee area.
Take a boat tour to view Montmorency Falls! The smaller the boat the closer you'll get.

Our last night we had dinner at Le Cafe Du Monde. It's a second story restaurant overlooking the St. Lawrence River. We watched all of the sailboats coming in for the night. Then we walked along the Rue Petit Champlain area. Very romantic. Very beautiful. There was a harpest playing on a small patio. Magnifique!

Feel free to PM with questions.

Re: Montreal/Quebec City

Thank you Lorie, for that wonderful description of your trip! Sadly I haven't been that far east in my country (I will fly into Montreal's Trudeau Airport in November but won't have time to explore the city before my next flight )

I've been told that Montreal is a fairly English-friendly city. But Lorie, I believe you are correct, very few people are taught English in a lot of Quebec (the province) due to a law. I'm fuzzy on this but I think there is also a law about signs must be only in French. Learn the key phrases (je parle francais un peu! ) and bring a French-English dictionary or something. I would expect that most people working in the touristy areas should be bilingual or at least be able to find a bilingual person to help you.

Re: Montreal/Quebec City

I spent my Junior year at Universite Laval in Ste-Foy (right next to Quebec City) and I turned 29 at the Chateau Frontenac (thanks Wally ) and heartily recommend staying as inside of Vieux-Quebec as possible (think wanting to visit the Old Port, but staying at the Airport Marriott.)

Restaurant au Parmesan is the most amazing dining experience in the world, it's our favorite restaurant on the planet. Montreal is more "cosmopolitan" but I've always found it relatively easy getting around in English in both cities---almost frustratingly so when I wanted to practice my French, they'd detect the accent and respond in English.

Has anyone mentioned the Funiculaire? Have fun!!! We're supposed to go up with my brother and sil this summer, but we haven't made much of a dent in planning.

Most people in Montreal will be bilingual and are very friendly to Americans - they can get a bit snotty with their fellow Canadians though. . The further into Quebec you get there will probably be less English speaking, but in the heart and touristy areas of Quebec City you should be fine.

Donna you are correct about the French/English signage in Quebec. They have Language Police (no, I'm not kidding) that goes around and checks to make sure that your sign is more prominent in French. If it's not you have to take the sign down and pay a rather large fine.
